Thanks for the analysis. Certainly not trying to cherry pick, and I recognized Mayes hasn't had chance. Mostly though I wanted to compare our picks at the top end of the draft to those equivalent picks by other clubs. I think Docherty was pick 12 so let's say pick 12 or better for the comparison. Which probably makes the Richmond comparisons good one. Granted quite early just yet, but on the surface we seem to have been less successful in comparison.

Again, you're comparing to the only team who got three players who are best 22 or borderline in those picks. Why not Melbourne, who has zero best 22 players left and two aren't even on their list?

Taking only those who had picks from the top 20 in all three years (top 12 is a bit arbitrary, given it's based off where we happened to pick):
Melbourne: Scully, Cook, Taggert
Richmond: Martin, Conca, Ellis
Fremantle: Morabito, Pitt, Sheridan
North: Cunnington, Atley, McKenzie
West Coast: Sheppard, Gaff, Newman
Port: Butcher, Jacobs, Wingard
Essendon: Melksham, Heppell, Kavanagh
Carlton: Lucas, Watson, Bootsma (22)
Bulldogs: Howard, Wallis, Clay Smith

Richmond have three, North and Essendon have two, and another three only have one. I'm not saying we're perfect, but I'm saying that we're far from horrible. And that's even ignoring the incredibly obvious issue that judging draftees off how many games they played in their first and second (or even third, for the KPPs/rucks) is incredibly short-sighted.

Richmond has done well the past few drafts with their top picks, that doesn't equal we have been doing bad. They got a top midfielder of his class with Martin, Ellis who has stepped in (Docherty will follow suit for us) and Conca who was a big bodied ready made player. There is no surprise all 3 are best 22 for the Tigers, especially coming off the back of the famous 5 year plan.

The interesting thing is that IMO, with the exception of Martin, the others have a lot lower potential ceiling than our draftees. They had the benefit of being able to step right in, but I expect a lot more out of the Polec/Longer combination (I don't have much of an opinion on Docherty one way or another). Of course, time may prove me wrong.

IIRC Stefan Martin stated he was training alongside Longer and Michael. I think this indicates that these players could be ATM groomed to play the forward/ruck role. I would personally be a little frustrated if Lomger plays up forward in 2013 as he needs time to develop as a ruckman before any hasty presumptions are made... I think that I'm making some hasty presumptions o_O. I would like to see Sammy Michael continue his finals form and perhaps get a senior match or two. I dont believe Longer will play up forward a lot with Lisle or Martin Cornelius, Close, Paparone and Staker likely to play up forward in the reserves. Do people believe Longer should play more up forward?

I kinda agree with that Bert Man. Longer long term will need to play a lot of game time up forward at AFL level, so it is a part of his game he needs to round out, as does Bergs. To get these 2 as a ruck combo, 1 of them needs to rest up forward while the other rucks. I think for Longer's development, he is best off having a really solid year being the #1 ruck at NEAFL level. He will probably have help here from Michael, Lisle or Martin who can rotate ruck and forward with Longer, giving him a chance to round out both sides of his game.

From memory (correct me if i'm wrong Quigs), Longer has pretty good natural tap work, i think with more strength, coaching and fitness, his rucking side of the game will come along pretty well. Up forward he can take a decent grab, but he isn't a forward. He will need to spend some time here, learning how to play up forward as he will need to do it at AFL level. There is no point having Longer (or Bergs for that matter) sitting up forward for half a game if they can't add something to the forward line, and neither of these guys are natural forwards. Bergs has also shown some ability to take a grab and kick a goal, but it's a different kettle of fish when you need to spend a decent amount of game time playing as a forward, opposed to being a ruckman drifting forward and taking a mark.

We will have a much younger on ball division in the reserves this year and i think it would be healthy for Longer to take ownership of that side a bit. They will need some good tap work from him. Will be interesting to see who will captain the reserve side with Retzy and Stiller both gone. Door kinda opens up a bit for someone like Longer to really take some ownership, step up in the leadership department and take the team on. That kind of thing sometimes makes a player.

This is my side for 2013, clear for anyone's opinions, i love bewick in the forward line, went to a couple games in victoria and bewicks workrate was very good and i also love Green in there, here provides us with so much run and pressure in the forward line. Martin and lisle tough choice, but the way lisle was looking in the last few games, and especially his
8 goals in the ressies regional gf

Patfull Merrett Golby
Adcock Maguire Hanley
Rich Redden Rockliff
Zorko Brown Beams
Bewick Lisle Green
Leuenberger Moloney Raines
Int: Black Mcgrath Staker Karnezis

Emg: Harwood Martin Yeo

JUST MISSING OUT :

Nice team. It will be interesting to see the form of Martin v Lisle for that forward ruck spot. I'd probably have Mcgrath starting with Beamer on the bench and I like Merrett out at CHB. The good thing is the quality of our emergencies this year

Apologies for the slight derail but - At the age of 15, apparently Sam became the youngest ‘regular’ senior player for Phillip Island in 2009 – IMO a hint of the future can, at times, be foreseen from the past - “Show me a footballer playing seniors at fifteen and I’ll show you a footballer” [Collier, Bromage, Watson - yeah a long bow comparing Phillip Is. with VFL but... just trying to 'assist' with an one-eyed opinion ;) ]

Living in the past allright:D

I couldnt agree more, I left merret as full back purely because i believe he is our number 1,
1 on 1 defender, patful would play on second best and maguire a nick maxwell/ josh gibson
roll, even though i'd love merret being able to run off half back, 1 on 1 i believe he would be better
placed and also a rotation system may be neccisary, loving the depth this year

I seem to recall that a certain J Brown debuted in the seniors at Warrnambool at 15.

FB: Adcock Merrett Patful
HB: Golby Maguire Docherty
C: Hanley Moloney Rich
HF: Zorko Lisle Polec
FF: Green Brown Bewick
FOLL: Leuenberger Redden Rockliff
I/C Black Raines Lester Beams

Emerg: Staker Martin Mayes

It's a bloody hard team to choose. Staker and Lester are on par for the last position, however I chose Lester because Staker is probably a little rusty.

Does anyone see Ryan Lester playing up forward at all this year. Also does anyone see Patty Wearden getting any games?

I reckon your side is about spot on Bert Man in terms of where things are at. Probably like everyone else would like to see Patty K returning to form in the NAB cup and looking to grab Lester's spot, think he can add a bit more x-factor to the team. Will be interesting to see if McGrath can hold his spot, this year might be his last. Mayes sounds like he is certainly a reasonable chance to debut in the early rounds if Bewick doesn't continue on his form of late last year.

I think that Karnezis would be ahead of Mayes for that spot. If McGrath can play well in the forward pocket I wouldn't mind him there ahead of Karnezis. IIRC correctly he kicked 5 goals against the doggies before getting injured. I like Lester more than Karnezis because he is so much more composed and versatile IMO.

Will be very interesting to see how Karnezis is moving this year after looking a bit laboured last year and having had another pre-season under his belt. In an ideal world he will be ahead of Mayes but if not it can only mean he has not come on as hoped. I think of our mid-sized forwards he and Ace will be under the most pressure to step up.

This is my starting team for 2013.

F: Green, Brown, Staker
HF: Rockliff, Lisle, Zorko
C: Black, Raines, Hanley
HB: Harwood, Maguire, Drummond

In years gone by i could easily put a team together but this year i am finding it very hard to actually pick a lineup without dropping players i rate. Sign of us getting some depth :)

HB: Patfull, Maguire, Adcock
C: Rich, Raines, Hanley
HF: Rockliff, Staker, Zorko
F: Green, Brown, Lisle
RR: Leuenberger, Redden, Black

My team for Round 1 is
Patfull Maguire Golby
Adcock Merrett Docherty
Hanley Rich Polec
Zorko Lisle Rockliff
Green Brown Bewick

Ruck Leuenberger Moloney Raines
Interchange Black Beams Redden
Emergency Staker
I am expecting improved performances in 2013 but this may not translate into a significantly better win/loss ratio. Hopefully it will, but other teams will also improve. Reasons why we should improve are
·A fit Leuenberger
·The addition of clearance specialist Moloney
·Improved running capacity and mobility across the team
·Better coaching - another year of learning for Voss
·Depth. This means that we have good options to replace out-of-form players, cover injuries and manage tiredness. This should lead to more even performances

This selection of the Reserves highlights depth

Wearden McKeever McGrath
Close Clarke Lester
Paparone Yeo Crisp
Mayes Michael Polkinghorne
Banfield Martin Cornelius

Ruck Longer Harwood Karnezis
Interchange Newell Wrigley Bartlett
Emergency O’Brien
Without being arrogant I feel sorry for the NEAFL team meeting this lot first up.

Ok so after reading many of your posts I've come to a conclusion of what my team would be made of... So here it goes:
Back: Maguire as a floating Backman like a josh Gibson type, Merret on #1 full forward of opponent eg Pavlich, Franklin (if the opponent lacks the tall timber up forward should be sent up forward to run a muck). Golby/Harwood I will not make this decision but instead leave it on the club, I reckon they are both great defenders for the years to come and its to dificult for me to split them apart at the moment. So for that reason I'm leaving it to who ever excels in preseason, but whoever does make it of those 2 will most likely play on the 2nd medium crumbing/ medium sized leading forward eg Saad, Howe.
Half Back: Adcock on #1 small crumbling forward eg the little rascal Milne, Rioli. Patfull predomenatly on #2 leading centre half forward who pushes down the ground eg Reiwolt, Roughhead. Yeo as that run off half back playing on the simplest of forwards/medium sized. The reason I have Yeo in the backline and not Hanley is due to Hanleys every now and then turn overs and lack of composure but we obviously still need that run off half back and I believe Yeo will deliver just that next year.
Centre: Hanley this is where I believe he can really do some damage on the edges of the back 50 and on the wing where he can run and carry off short kicks and quick handballs, he tends to fumble when deep in defence at crucial times when under immense pressure but on the wing I believe he will play with much more confidence. He should also be utilised the other way playing defencive jobs on the likes of Jetta, Hille and other fast wingers. Rockliffe. Rich. Obviously these guys will predominantly be in the centre square but they don't all fit :p.
Half Forward: The Magician, Lisle only just over Martin, Cornelius as that 3rd tall leading right up.
Forward: Green/Banfield I'd really hate to treat Banfield like a scapegoat because of one year. I'm hoping he clicks back into gear in the nab cup and fires again in the season. Again I'll leave that decision to the club to compare who's persisted more in the pre-season training. Brown more as a leading forward only to the tip of the centre square. Bewick doing what he did well at the end of last season.
Ruck: Leuenberger switching with Martin in the forward line. Moloney, Redden.
Interchange: Black, Beams, McGrath
Sub: Polec

So.....
B: Maguire, Merret, Golby/Harwood
HB: Adcock, Patfull, Yeo
Centre: Hanley Rockiffe Rich
HF: Zorko, Lisle, Cornelious
F: Green/Banfield, Brown, Bewick
R: Leuenberger, Redden, Moloney
I: Black Beams McGrath
S: Polec

I also believe crisp is really rated highly by the coaches so I'd take a punt and say he'd probably be in there instead of Cornelious

Last year everyone had Karnezis in their round 1 team and he ended up being a surprise omission. It wouldn't surprise me if the reverse happened this year.
