Preview 2014 Draft Our First Pick - Who Do We Take?

Guys would it be possible to keep this thread purely for the possible first pick talk. The other thread I started earlier in the year has become a bit of a general draft thread, so maybe take that sort of chatter over there instead.
Now now Dimma. There's more to a team than first rounders. :p

Unless we can somehow upgrade our first pick so we could get Petracca which would be highly unlikely because we would need give up our first and a quality player. I wouldn't be aposed to trading our pick for a good player from GWS or Gold Coast around the age of 20-21.

Well we're 3 weeks away from the end of the season and the group of players that is likely to be around at our first pick is becoming clearer and I thought I'd take the opportunity to collect information about these kids and give posters a chance to read up about them. At the moment I've only had a chance to collect the names that seem to be around the mark for our pick and there is a fair group of them given the even nature of the draft.

Over the next few weeks I'll try and add more information about the players in this post and if there is enough interest find info about players that might jump up as the season comes to and end and the kids get to go to the Combine.

With that in mind here is the initial list of those I believe that we'll have to pick from.

Sam Durdin 197cm 89kg KPP West Adelaide/SA

Jake Lever 192cm 84kg KPD Calder Cannons

Caleb Marchbank 193cm 85kg KPD Murray Bushrangers/Vic Country

Jarrod Pickett 179cm 76kg Forward/Mid South Fremantle/WA

Paul Ahern 181cm 77kg Mid/Forward Calder Cannons/Vic Metro

Jayden Laverde 189cm 82kg Mid/Forward Wes tern Jets/Vic Metro

Jordan De Goey 187cm 82kg Mid/Forward Oakleigh Chargers/Vic Metro

Hugh Goddard 196 cm 93kg KPP Geelong Falcons/Vic Country

Lachlan Weller 181cm 71kg Midfielder Broadbeach/Qld

I'd like to thank the guys at Bound For Glory for their write ups on the kids that are provided here. At the moment they don't have a write up on Jarrod Pickett and I'm not sure if they'll get to him, but if they do I'll add it here. I'll also be going through and adding the write ups from the likes of Chris25 & Knightmare if they don't mind. Where possible I'll also be adding their stats for the champs as well as the TAC Cup, SANFL , WAFL or NEAFL if I can find them.

More realistically, who will be available at pick 19?

Bit of a shot out of the cannon, but would you guys redraft cleve hughes? There's an article on the AFL site which says he's had a great season in the NEAFL and has kicked 78 goals in 15 games playing for Redland. Apparently a chance to get drafted. Sounds like a bit of a beat up by the media to be honest and I don't really know if we'd benefit by taking him back. What's everyones thoughts? And btw, I am NOT suggesting that we use our first pick on him (or redraft him at all for that matter), just trying to create discussion.

My mate played against that Waylen kid on the weekend, he rekons he tore his teams FB to shreds (who is leading their B'n'f easily)

_RT_ is going to be very grumpy with you all for side tracking his thread
When I'm trying to help out those who don't have much Draftee knowledge, you bet I'll get grumpy. ;)

Wouldn't surprise me if we went for a classy outside type. Our last few drafts have been 'foundation' midfielders if you like (Dusty, Conca, Ellis, Vlastuin) and the choice of Lennon may be the beginning of adding the cream. I'd be happy with Laverde or Ahern as they fit that mould.

I also wouldn't mind if we went Lever or Durdin. Would mean our backline is set up for 10 years. We might not have a pick this low again for a while and be able to grab a quality KPD who 'could' be a star. Chaplin only has a few years left.

I will be happy with either Durdin/Lever or any outside classy midfielder.

I really haven't looked much this year but Weller sounds a sure thing to be a good player for 10 years..pretty hard to miss these days with top 10 mids. However we also have to target pace and maybe it's time to take a risk on someone like Laverde or Pickett.

I can't see either of the talls being available especially with Carlton and the Dogs picking above us. Lever would be the more likely and an excellent fit for us.

I am assuming we have pick 7 but from what I understand it for us to miss out on both then someone like Brayshaw might be available.

Anyway I would go with one of those quality talls first.

I'd say 8 at best. GC won't win another game and we won't lose to the Saints. I think even if we win our next 2 and lose to the Swans it will still be pick 8 though. And then pushed back one more if Frawley leaves.

I'd say that Petracca, Wright, McCartin, Brayshaw and Durdin are likely gone. Then probably Laverde and Lever. Maybe Pickett falls there somewhere.

Stupid Goddard being shit.

Personally want one of Durdin, Weller or Ahern. Laverde is probably next.

Cannons playing finals is a big chance for Ahern. Jets will probably play finals so be great to watch them in the final series.
