Competitions 2015 Adelaide Oval Attendance Watch

Alright, get out your rulers, boys, it’s dick-measuring time. So far this year we’ve had the following crowds

Round 2: 49, 765
Round 4: 50, 675
Average: 50, 220

Whereas the Crows have had

Round 1: 46,491
Round 3: 43, 713
Average: 45,102

While we’ve admittedly had the benefit of high-drawing crowds and superior time-slots, it’s interesting that we’re 10% ahead of our “big brother” [sic].

Wonder if we can keep this up for the rest of the season. There are no prizes if we win, except imaginary internet points and bragging rights. And, after all the shit we got for our poor crowds, wouldn’t the bragging rights be especially delicious? Food for thought. Let’s see how this goes.

UPDATE (06/09/2015):

And so here we are, at the conclusion of our season. There's not much to say, really. We ended our season with three (!) consecutive sub-40k crowds which severely hit our average, while the Crows couldn't have hoped for any better with a capacity crowd against West Coast. A parallel of our seasons, almost.

[Note: I'm using figures directly from Wikipedia's 2015 AFL season page, not the revised figures. The revised figures would draw similar conclusions, I'm sure.]

Still, there's plenty of room for optimism. An average crowd of 43.7k is certainly a figure you can set your watch to. The 4th highest home-crowd average for 2015, behind juggernauts Richmond and Collingwood and, of course, Adelaide. If we consider the year as a whole, this is surely a win. If we look at the last three rounds in isolation, well, it's not great reading. However, we must consider context.

As mentioned last week, these sorts of small crowds would have been considered huge for us prior to AO arrival in 2014. I'm not saying they should be lauded now, but just a little perspective of how far we've come and how our expectations have changed is nice.

Ultimately, however, Adelaide have won this year's imaginary dick-measuring contest. Damn it. But here's a fun fact to end the year:

In 2012, Adelaide could only draw 31,742 to a final against Fremantle. Stephen Rowe, official Crows ambassador, blamed the low crowd on the Adelaide Show. Yesterday, in a dead rubber, where we couldn't make finals, against the low-scoring, unexciting Fremantle, who rested 11 (12?) players, we drew 38,633. Not to mention we were 'competing' with the Adelaide Show.

Anyway, signing out of this thread now. See you in 2016.

2 Saturday night games vs top teams helps.

They had an (Easter) Sunday afternoon game against Norf, and a Saturday arvo game against Melbourne. Two low drawing timeslots against low drawing teams. To top it off both were in the wet.

Apples and Oranges at this point. The Crows have done well to get that many to be honest!

Yeah cant see it Happening unless we get fortune weather advantage

but I'd take beating them on the field than beating them in crowds any day of the week
Goes without saying, really. But we have preview/match day threads for that kind of discussion. This thread's purpose is to discuss the relatively unimportant topic of attendances.

2004, coming off two consecutive minor premierships and again considered among the favourites for the flag:

SAT/7:10 - Adelaide, Richmond
SUN/12:40 - Essendon, Hawthorn, Sydney, WCE
SUN/2:10 - Collingwood, Geelong, Melbourne
SUN/2:45 - Bulldogs
SUN/3:40 - Carlton

2005 as reigning premiers:

FRI/8:10 - Geelong, Hawthorn
SAT/2:10 - Melbourne
SAT/7:10 - Brisbane, Carlton, Essendon, Bulldogs, Richmond, Adelaide, Fremantle
SUN/2:40 - North

I love how it took us to actually win a premiership to get a fixture approaching anything like that which Collingwood, Carlton, Richmond and Essendon enjoy every year.

It was good while it lasted.

Somewhat on topic, especially given how good your first two attendances have been and it would be strange if true - have you guys noticed a lessening of food and drink options at your games? My assistant is a mad Port fan and she goes with her husband each game and she has noticed that they lost their BFF hotdog stall and the coffee stall by their stair entrance (Audi Club level) and was wondering if it's spread to other areas given how far they had to walk and line up for coffee.

My seats are on the upper level in East and we still have our hotdog stall for example at our games. She sent an email of to the club but they haven't responded at yet.

Might've moved to the Gameday Village where the club gets a cut?

The BFF hotdog stand just out the front of 536 shut just after half time to my dismay. But probably didn't need the calories after beers, pies and chips i indulged in prior.

The Mothers Day game on Sunday week is in the twilight timeslot against WCE. Unfortunately that game will bring down the average quite a bit. Should bounce back a fortnight later for Kane's 300th against Richmond, albeit in the same timeslot of Sunday twilight.

Our first test will be Sunday Twilight against West Coast.

I can't see any footy crowd beating our record attendances last year. You just get the feeling that the SMA/SANFL have had last year under their belts and their OH&S gauges have kicked in. Also, with the years experience under their belts the SMA have now modeled the very bare minimum/maximum profit from their catering. As Aneale has pointed out, a lot of the options that were there last simply don't exist anymore. You can only get Superdry at most of the bars, the choice has been eroded. Bars are also closing earlier. SMA has trimmed the fat whilst increasing the prices.

Whilst I'm here, I might as well vent a new whinge, which I must admit is probably directed more at the club. Now that they have allocated/sold a shit load more reserved seats in the Western stand, it is bloody hard to get a seat if you don't have one. Both games I've got there before 6pm, Sydney game we got seats 3 rows from the back, Hawthorn game we ended up standing. I know it's a whinge, but I've always liked the freedom of a non fixed seat, but now it appears that unless you're willing to get there 2 hours before the game, it's nosebleed seats in the western stand, so it's pretty much the same as A GA ticket, for more than twice the cost.

I've also enjoyed the freedom of a fixed seat, with AAMI they surveyed the member community a number of times and the option of a fixed seat was always rejected. I'm starting to think if it was offered again I would consider it. There are issues with this however, such as seats offering different views and comfort (tiered pricing); grouping issues to manage; prioritising requests etc. Now that they get additional revenue for charging for a fixed seat, there's almost no need for the club/SMA to go fully reserved.

Those with an allocated seat shouldn't be seeking unreserved seats (unless they decide not to sit in them) - so the mere fact that there are more of those shouldn't be an issue with quantity (but with location).

I suspect there are more people than seats in the members reserve. If this is the case, they need to respectfully and sensibly manage standing room (albeit this assumes standers are physically able to do this).

They sell guest passes expecting a number of Crows SMA members to not turn up. Hopefully they've properly analysed (from last year) the number of SMA tickets that are Crows fans who share them with Port mates etc. Some would also just attend as Port v Hawthorn in that time slot has plenty of footy appeal. Our crowds (ie the number of games we have > 50,000) and difficulty in finding seats suggest they do oversell this space.

I got my Essential Power unreserved membership in 2013. I didn't think we'd be selling out week after week and for my mates and I, it seemed like the perfect option. unfortunately we're victims of our clubs success.
