Alright, get out your rulers, boys, it’s dick-measuring time. So far this year we’ve had the following crowds
Round 2: 49, 765
Round 4: 50, 675
Average: 50, 220
Whereas the Crows have had
Round 1: 46,491
Round 3: 43, 713
Average: 45,102
While we’ve admittedly had the benefit of high-drawing crowds and superior time-slots, it’s interesting that we’re 10% ahead of our “big brother” [sic].
Wonder if we can keep this up for the rest of the season. There are no prizes if we win, except imaginary internet points and bragging rights. And, after all the shit we got for our poor crowds, wouldn’t the bragging rights be especially delicious? Food for thought. Let’s see how this goes.
UPDATE (06/09/2015):
And so here we are, at the conclusion of our season. There's not much to say, really. We ended our season with three (!) consecutive sub-40k crowds which severely hit our average, while the Crows couldn't have hoped for any better with a capacity crowd against West Coast. A parallel of our seasons, almost.
[Note: I'm using figures directly from Wikipedia's 2015 AFL season page, not the revised figures. The revised figures would draw similar conclusions, I'm sure.]
Still, there's plenty of room for optimism. An average crowd of 43.7k is certainly a figure you can set your watch to. The 4th highest home-crowd average for 2015, behind juggernauts Richmond and Collingwood and, of course, Adelaide. If we consider the year as a whole, this is surely a win. If we look at the last three rounds in isolation, well, it's not great reading. However, we must consider context.
As mentioned last week, these sorts of small crowds would have been considered huge for us prior to AO arrival in 2014. I'm not saying they should be lauded now, but just a little perspective of how far we've come and how our expectations have changed is nice.
Ultimately, however, Adelaide have won this year's imaginary dick-measuring contest. Damn it. But here's a fun fact to end the year:
In 2012, Adelaide could only draw 31,742 to a final against Fremantle. Stephen Rowe, official Crows ambassador, blamed the low crowd on the Adelaide Show. Yesterday, in a dead rubber, where we couldn't make finals, against the low-scoring, unexciting Fremantle, who rested 11 (12?) players, we drew 38,633. Not to mention we were 'competing' with the Adelaide Show.
Anyway, signing out of this thread now. See you in 2016.
