Had to bolt and get out of my free park in the mall.

Good win in the end for SA, bad kicking for goal let them down a bit and could have easily been a 8-9 goal. But VM fought back and did not disgrace themselves.

Players of note for SA:

Francis - Boy oh boy was he good back there. I'd really love to see his intercept and contested mark stats because it was like watching Chad Cornes circa 2004-2007 back there. Huge leap from behind, strong one grab marks, either standing on some blokes shoulders or just purely out leaping and out reaching everyone around him. Absolutely brilliant, he will have some highlight reel from this game. The only negative was his kicking back out, he didn't execute as well as I would have liked and it lead to a few turnovers. Maybe he just wanted it to come back in so he could take another hangar.

Markov - He was excellent across half forward, lead well, marked strongly and kicked straight. VM did not have anybody that could stop him, you can see he has AFL talent and a bit of X factor or enigma about him. He's got personality and was vocal in his celebrations and getting the team up.

Milera - very good game, he found a good amount of the pill, was creative and dangerous through the middle and up forward. He also tackled well and caused turnovers with his pressure and exhibited some good skills

Partington - Just a solid all round game, won plenty of the pill and used it well. Is AFL ready now, surprised Norwood haven't played him in their seniors yet. I expect that will come soon. The mids looked for him as well, he has a general like presence there.

Dew - Good game, missing a bit through 2nd but overall fairly sound. Was great in 1 on 1's with ball in dispute, showed his trademark sidestep ability when in tight to dish off quick hands or get the kick out and forward. Always looking to attack and drive SA forward. He's long been a favourite of mine and was decent today.

Snelling - Won a fair bit if it in tight in the end but his skills were average at best today. Ran hard, worked hard but needed better execution. Still amongst the better players in the end.

Haysman - moderate game but have seen him play better, have high expectations of him I guess as he has talent. Found a bit of it but made a few blues that sold his team into trouble at times.

Olekalns - Good game, ferocious attack on the footy, always moving around and using his pace and brain. Created many attacks and ran as hard as anyone on the ground. Genuinely looked dangerous.

Coombe - Not bad, found a fair bit of it inside and around the packs but not at his best today. Skills a bit scrappy and sloppy at times.

Nunn - not bad, not great. Showed some toe at times and did find it a bit but not dominant by any stretch.

Scharenberg - Was a shadow of himself today, when he had it he blazed or was caught not taking the first option. Showed glimpses when he had it that he will be very good however. Perhaps most did not adjust to the occasion.

Tahana - Quiet early, seemed to get a bit more late but didn't jump out at me much.

Bampton - Hard inside game but did not really have any influence and skis were below par for him.

Redman - Very good game, was creative and floated around half forward and looked dangerous. Such a smooth mover, there is an AFL player right there.

Bonner - didn't see much of it and whilst he drove it out of defence a few times, was well down on his usual high standards.

Hewett - Was everywhere, got a fair bit of it and took some good marks. Is a good size and tackled well also. Skills let him down at times however but a fairly decent game.

Aguis - good early but dropped out of it once he copped that knock or something. Showed glimpses of talent and other times purely laziness.

Allen - Did a few good things and provided a marking target. One good grab stood out but nothing outstanding.

Ladhams - Marked well up forward and when in the ruck won plenty of taps. Showed some appetite for the contest. Good game and something is there.

Parella - Solid in ruck with plenty of taps as he always does. Poor around the ground and was very slow to bend over and pick it up. But won the ruck I thought. Just needed to offer something around the ground.

VM:

Gresham - solid game, plenty of the pill and excellent clean skills in close. Never panicked with the pill till he found a good option.

Stillman - Some horrid moments and other times not bad vision. Largely looked ineffective though and slow to dispose of it

O'Kearney - won bucket loads of the pill and always looked to create. Has a classic hunched over style like Cotchin but far less skill and hurt factor. Never stopped trying all day and one of their best.

Answerth - huge second half, he got off the chain there and ran to space all the time. Clean skills and genuinely looked dangerous. Definitely one of their better players.

Morgan - good game, fairly clean and won a fair bit of it. Quite a neat player, did a lot of work across half back and into the middle.

Clarke - was ok early and came and went through the game but not dominant.

Foley - another who seemed to lift in the second half, lots of attacking efforts and fairly decent skills going forward.

Batty - liked his inside work and showed cleaner hands than anyone else on the ground when in tight. Not huge numbers I dont think but impressed me all the same.

Matera - bobbed up with a couple and looked dangerous at times.

Thompson - better second half than his first, got a bit of it and had a solid leg but not the best game.

Balic - they looked for him all the time. Has size and a presence on the ground. Slow as a wet week but still has time to do what he needs. Is an interesting player and need to see more before forming an opinion. Skills needed sharpening.

Walker - not a bad game, created some goals and marked the ball well.

Houston - one of their better players in the end, couldn't really do much more from the opportunities he had so decent game.

Crocker - old fashioned type, looks about 30 already, solid body and found lots of it. Skills however were pretty average.

Smith - thought he competed with great physical presence in the ruck, and had more running power than both SA rucks. Beaten in the hit outs but not disgraced.

Sorry if I didn't get them all. Numbers confused me at times and am sure not all were as listed. Also didn't have any binos so all the activity on the outer side was very hard to see.

Yea the numbers in the book had me. Didnt think Stillman looked like that but went with what was in front of me. Leonardis named best for VM, I am going to have to watch the game again somehow because I don't remember him very much.

My observations - SA clearly the better side and just outran metro. Typical SA performance in that the sum of its' parts was far better than the individual pieces. Just so much more work rate (Agius excepted) and committed to the cause. Harder too. I reckon today's side was close to our best with Presbury, Broadwood and Dawson in for Bampton, Surman (though I'd be having him forward and give the rucks games off each, too) and probably Scharenberg based on what we've seen being our best side. Which is unfortunate for Quinn, Shaz and Cross who are all really quite good.

Aaron Francis - Oh man he was good. Like, super good. So many intercept marks, 10-15 I reckon - and most were in some regard contested as well. Positioning and read was just so good. An incredible one handed contested grab too. What I loved was how he instinctively peeled off and ran the moment he took the mark too - no point waiting. Always looked to move it on and penetrate by foot, occasionally execution let him down but he's normally a good kick. Got a standing ovation from the crowd when he rotated off in the last. A lot of Sam Fisher about him.

Oleg Markov - Surprised me as I haven't seen this from him at junior level. Leading patterns were good, his leaping excellent - so high and timed his jumps to perfection and took it at the highest point. Just a great game. A lot of WHE about him.

Wayne Milera - Really, really nice game. IMO his stocks rose more than anyone bar Markov. Was much cleaner than anyone at ground level, spacial awareness was excellent and his skills superb. Just a very consistent player within his own game - does everything right. Time seems to stop around him, he's a top 20 talent for mine.

Luke Partingotn - clearance game strong. outside game strong. Always looks inboard to take the ball direct and tries to run it where possible. Avoids low risk kicks at all times (i.e down the line bombs) which occasionally backfires but it's far better for his stocks than doing what the rest of them do. Running patterns are superb.

Will Snelling - meh game from him. Cooling on him every time I see him, low hurt factor, wasn't dominant inside. Gets the ball but just meh all round.

Matthew Allen - more and more convinced that he's not a AFL key forward. You're either a round one or a round none prospect for mine and he's the latter. Good at ground level and *shades* of Roughead but not near enough presence or dominantion.

Jonty Scharenberg - less said the better.

Matthew Nunn - quiet.

Hugh Haysman - I liked his game. He's rising every game for mine. Normally outside gut runner and while his execution was average you could tell his spacial awareness was top notch; time stopped around him. Evasion game was strong as was his composure in traffic. Seems a natural.

Will Combe - Quiet. Not his normal self; normally a good kick for an inside mid but just didn't really do so well.

Luke Surman - did one freakish thing that I forgot but was incredible. Quiet aside. Westhoff as the other key back ran off well but again, quiet.

Stephen Tahana - quiet early but more involved than last week and seemed to defensively perform.

Maris Olekalns - I've always really liked this guy and was baffled at his omission last game. Courageous (which is a massive improvement) attack, relentless pressure, creative, crafty and composed, nippy and skilled. He's a player.

Mason Redman - Saw the angles and found the dangerous space. He's got that forward IQ - he's an AFL type player, just kept popping up and executing where it mattered.

Keiran Agius - One excellent play where he picked it up cleanly at ground level at full pace then lace out darted it to Ladhams on the lead. Apart from that...quiet. CBFd hard at times.

Andre Parrella - He's improving. He's a massive, massive project but one that'll work. His strength at the stoppage is superb, just doesn't let his opponent get a chance to win the tap. Tackling pressure ok. Around the ground is where he's weak with his composure poor and his decisio making average. The positive with him is that 2-3 months ago Andre wasn't in the positions to have me judge his composure as he was so far away from the ball. At least now he's improved to the level where he'll be in dangerous spots occasionally. Relatively athletic too - IQ is the issue. I'm pretty sure he'll be drafted, though.

Peter Ladhams - Here's one I like. He's next year but there's a lot to work with. Good forward game - probably the equivalent of a Witts forward - relatively smart with his leads and marking as far as rucks go. Gets in the right spots in the ruck and taps well. He's raw but he's our best ruck prospect since Grundy.

Riley Bonner - Early he was solid but didn't have a massive impact across the game. He'll bounce back, he's a jet.

Jack Agostino - I really like him. Gives me a bit of a Luke Brown kind of feel. Makes good decisions, keeps his man honest - a reliable and good footballer.

Peter Bampton - Quiet. As he's been all season.

Brendan Dew - He's just a likable player. Works hard, puts his head over the ball, creates space, assesses the situation and is crafty. Wins the ball when needed. He's a good player and today - in an average game for him - he still had an impact. Very draftable.

Cam Hewett - Best game I've seen from him. There's a lot to like - some real upside. But he's far from complete at this stage.

Metro:

I normally familiarise myself with players' looks/numbers/gaits pretty quickly and already knew half the side coming into the game. If I don't mention a player, it's purely because I literally didn't notice them do anything that made me want to check their number once.

James Parsons/Callum Moore/Blake Hardwick/Jack Silvagni/Harry Thompson/Ryan Clarke - held Metro back. They're all good players and they all had quiet days. Clarke you could tell was classy but wasn't consistent. Barely saw Parsons all day. Silvagni kicked a goal but was quiet. Moore very quiet. Hardwick even more quiet. Thompson ok but definitely not an AFL KPF.

Ben Crocker - Frustrated me. Racked up six cheap touches in one play at one stage (beware when looking at stats) and some absolute clangers. Understands football but rushed himself all day.

Goy Lok - A few blunders and lacked composure at times but there's enough to work with for him to enter my draft board as a speculative type.

Jade Gresham - He's what Jake Johansen would have been with an extra few inches, to an extent. Poor man's Prestia perhaps? Goes in hard, clean, reasonably composed (but not dominant at ground level/hard ball situations) but very conservative by foot. Favoured safe and short or lateral optios.

Jordan Matera - Looked okay without saying he belongs.

Jarrad Smith - Impressed me. A lot. A bit raw in the ruck but Andre beats most people but around the ground he seemed to have an impact. In close he acted a bit like another midfielder, finding the ball in patches quite a bit. When the ball was in congestion you kept hearing 'Jarrad, Jarrad' - because he just found the ball more often than you'd expect for a tall in close. He's one to watch.

Harley Balic - Didn't impress. Received a lot of the ball by virtue of being literally spoon fed by every player who'd clearly been instructed to seek him out. Stitched up a few times as a result. Time does stop and he is composed but really, all I thought was 'poor man's Jackson MacRae' - and that's not a good thing.

Theo Thompson - Quiet - but there's enough there to like.

Thomas Cameron - Impressed me. Seemed to always be around the mix, was in the right spots to present as a viable and effective option consistently and had some hurt factor. One of their best and someone I came out of the game thinking 'he's an AFL player.'

Alex Morgan - Nice game. Contributed and worked all day and really seemed committed. I don't think he's at the same level as some in the side but he elevated himself out of sheer effort.

Nick O'Kearney - He's an undersized accumulator with very little hurt factor. Works hard which is admirable but turned it over all day. Not for me.

Dan Houston - I'm not sold on him but he did what he could with the supply he got.

Well he did a crap job then.

Managed 4 kicks and 1 mark the whole game.

AhChee managed 12 kicks 4 handballs and managed to pump the ball into the forward 50m the most for his team.

I would say that you got soundly beaten on the day. Looking at the information it seems that he played 100% of the game time as well. He certainly was missing for most the game from my viewing.

It was very hard to see at each end of the ground for me, so I may have missed something in his game but getting 1 kick in each quarter is certainly not impressive.

Thanks for your report LM, you no doubt saw better than I, better idea then me and I don't really think you disagreed with much, haha.

As for Ah Chee, he was literally camped in the WA forward line for most of the game, often as the furthest player up the park, which since he's not a KPF, was strange and it took ages to work out where he was in the 1Q because I expected him in the mids. Which makes him easy to tag I guess. Remember because was focused on him most of the game as was the one from WA I was most interested in.

Hopefully he goes better today. Wont be able to go this time. Like Leederville Oval except when its raining!

noticed there's quite a few West Adelaide boys playing well, thoughts on their draft prospects? obviously Francis will be the first to go, and quite early, then Bonner, Snelling, Haysman? Does Agostino get picked up? Thinking Brind and Westhoff just don't have the class?

Great read Skippos, thanks for sharing.

You are right with Matt Allen - he isn't a key forward at AFL level. Unfortunately, he is being played in that role here because he is SA's best option at CHF. At AFL level, I think he is more like Tom Lynch from the Crows. A guy who can play as a high forward, run a bit through the midfield and go forward and kick a few goals. I'm not sure where that positions him in terms of draft, but it would have been nice to see him play some games with a run in the middle.

Pretty much what I've been saying in regards to Allen. Despite his size, he is that tweener type player. He just doesn't play as a key forward. A bit like Lynch as you mentioned, and a bit like Paparone from Brisbane. If you haven't seen him play, then it's easy to get caught up in his stats and assume he is some big strong marking forward. But he gets his ball when he pushes up the ground, and creates mismatches on much smaller opponents. It's a hard one, he'd be getting better numbers for sure if he played that role for SA. But, if he wants to make it at AFL level, then realistically he needs to play as a key forward and prove himself in that role.

I don't agree. He won't be an AFL key forward. Even if he was dominating in the air in this champs, he would still be seen as being that in between size. He has to demonstrate that he can have an impact around the ball. Unfortunately his role for SA won't allow it, which is to his detriment.

He might not be an AFL key forward (and I don't think he will be) but he won't be a big roaming midfielder either.

Considering his most likely role is as a third tall half forward, I imagine clubs would prefer to see him perform up forward as opposed to getting 15-20 touches on the wings and around packs. At least I would. I'd expect a 194cm player to be able to have an impact around the ball against smaller opposition, but if you can't be taking marks and kicking goals against your peers then it's hard to see them even playing that Tom Lynch role at the next level.

Bonner 10-30
Snelling 30-rookie
Haysman 40-rookie
Agostino 50-rookie
Westhoff rookie-undrafted
Brind undrafted
