9am tomorrow morning but I fully expect Quigley to take advantage of the early thread opening.

Snoop...... Quigley will take advantage of the early posting opportunity so that he can start typing his selection up , it will be an essay . I am hoping that he will have seen a bit of the Qld Academy kids and be able to put some relative value on them for the rest of us who haven't seen , or seen very little of them , as quite frankly I have no idea where to place Hipwood for example.

Jokes aside I always look forward to Quigleys mock draft .However I need to take two days annual leave to be able to read the thesis.

Good to see some new posters this year in what will be a very interesting draft it's short on numbers but rich in diversity . I have quite a few players that I like but ranking them on the big board is proving a challenge after the first 20 .

Pick 1 - Brisbane

Josh Schache - 199cm KPF

Okay probably a good idea for me to kick things off now rather than tomorrow morning which is looking pretty crazy already. I have been critical of the Lions for not going early to address their glaring weakness at KPF and so it would be hypocritical of me to not take the stand out KPF with this pick. Lets be clear I do not think Schache will be the best player to come out of the draft and if I was going best available I would certainly go with Francis and Weitering ahead of him. Both of those guys I am very confident will end up being elite players at AFL level in their respective positions. Weitering might even end up an elite KPF if he is played there rather than down back.

Schache once he matures I see as a top 10 or so KPF in the competition. He will be a legitimate power forward target who will provide the structure and target up forward which we desperately need. I do however think he is going to take a fair while to get there. I am expecting his development curve to be a lot like Tom Hawkins in that a lot of supporters will be cursing and writing him off early in his career. My biggest issue with him at the moment is that he struggles to get separation in leading situations. Whenever he is leading up the ground the KPD is almost always in his hip pocket and when he is dealing with bigger, stronger and quicker KPDers at AFL level he is going to struggle early whilst he learns the ropes and gets stronger himself. I do think he gets there but it is not going to be without bumps along the way.

At the Champs, Schache jumped into the consciousness of most draft watchers with some great performances. He finished with 24 goals which is a new record and won the Larke medal for the best Div 1 player (usually a midfielders award). Whilst the overall standard was down for Div 1 was down this year I did think there quite a few very decent KPD prospects and the fact that he dominated was a credit to him. I would have liked to see him go against Collins and Weitering but you can only go against the guys thrown up against him.

Schache is a very tall power forward who will be a monster when fully developed. He has a very big frame and he already uses it well to overwhelm and keep the defender behind him. Above his head I would say his hands are good but not elite. With the ball on the ground he is very good for a player of his size and he is both clean and smart with the way he uses his body to collect and get the ball away. His football smarts might be the most impressive aspect of his game. Schache knows what to do and where to go to get the best results for himself and the team. If he is spoiled he keeps the ball in his area well and his second efforts are great. His leading patterns are good and he reads the ball in the air well. He marks out in front of himself nicely which is good seeing as he often does not have a lot of separation.

He is not the best chaser defensively but he does use his laziness in the chase to good effect and if his man gets away from him he will move to dangerous space so that if there is a turnover he is position to take advantage of it. He is a very accurate set shot and from open play he is also a very good finisher for his size. Like a lot of very good forwards he is also an excellent deliverer of the ball into 50 and is both smart in the options he takes and where he puts it.

He has the size to ruck and does ruck a bit at junior level but I have not been impressed with this aspect of his game. If I picked him it would not be with the intention of him playing as a second ruck.

Great assessment. I feel Schache will struggle for the first few years until his body develops, he does struggle to get separation from his defender on the lead. In the two Australian Academy games he did not standout, he always had a defender right on him and I don't think he hardly had a contested mark. I would like to see him crash the packs a bit more and make a real presence in the forward line. He is all class for a player of his size, clean below his knees and a magnificent kick, he will take time.

Like virtually all tall forwards you have to wait a good 3-4 years before allowing them to have an influence.
