Im happy to sub in for any missing coaches if required :) Just an option.

Will be interesting to see what GC do. If they are losing Dixon do they back in Day, Wright and Lynch and take a mid/flanker type in Francis OR do they grab Weitering and shuffle things around?

Probably the most interesting pick in the top 3-4.

Pick 3 - Carlton - Callum Mills - NSW (188.0 cm, 78.0 kg - Midfielder)

Jonenb
You're up mate.

This is around the point where Mills will get a bid. Normally I ignore academy and FS selections and allow others to pick them up, but this year the drop off in talent in my eyes is too much.
Last year for NSW I watched two players dominate in the midfield and they were Heeney and Mills. I actually thought Mills was slightly better than Heeney and that is saying something because Heeney is a beast! Assuming his skills and ability have no disappeared with regards to his shin injury, he is a lock for a top 5 bid in my eyes.
Having been part of the academies since the age of 13, his talents are well and truely known and he should be back playing NEAFL in the near future.
He has the ability to play on the inside and win most 1 v 1 contests and had great spread from the contest and created some outside play. He has a little Selwood about his play in his attack on the ball. I don't mind his marking ability from last year and no doubt his battles with Heeney over the years has helped him develop.

4. Melbourne – Aaron Francis (SA – MID/DEF/FWD)
Height: 191cm, Weight: 86kg, DOB: 10/8/1997
Recruited from: West Adelaide
Comparison: A mix between Jack Darling and Brendon Goddard.

Profile: Is he a mid, defender, forward or tweener? Not sure but he is genuine A+ potential prospect and he finds a way to impact games. Is he high on Melbourne’s needs list? Not sure but I expected him to go at number 3 and could not resist. Would be an ideal addition for any club and offers massive versatility. Started the year as a defender and in the U18 carnival spent time back, forward (4 goals in one game) and even took some rotations through the midfield. Had a strong carnival and was the stand out South Australian. This saw him named in U18 All Australian team at CHF but more like a 3rd tall and swing man. His elite athleticism allows him to play taller than his height would suggest, similar to Jack Darling. He works hard and once he builds up his endurance, showed enough in midfield to suggest he may go the Fyfe big bodied midfielder role.

Excellent foot skills, strong aerial presence and has great decision making. Generally efficient by foot and he makes adjustments during games to adapt to what is happening. Given time, he will also be a strong on-field leader in the mould of Luke Hodge.

Like Darling, he is a real possibility to be playing in his first year. Like many recent top SA recruits, he has already shown he fits in at the SANFL league level removing some of the guesswork as to whether he can take the next step. This selection would fit well with the age profile of Melbourne’s list and be an integral member to take them to the next window of success.

Others considered:
Parish – felt like he would complement the formidable midfield that Melbourne are amassing

Francis is probably my favourite player coming out of this draft. I love his attitude on the field and his will to win and do what it takes. I am not sure he is always under directions but he often seems to move to area most under pressure or in need of a boost.

I think he will captain an AFL team and he reminds of Voss quite a lot in his attitude. From a Brisbane supporter that is about as big a compliment as you can get.

Francis I personally don't have as much love as BF with him.

I could be completely wrong in my thoughts on Francis but unlike others I did not see any real ability in the midfield. He just looked like a big player throwing around his weight against the smaller midfielders. He hardly ever gets first hands on the ball and spends most of his time tackling.
Up forward he has no idea about multiple leads, where to lead, he just wants to sag off his defender and take and intercept mark.
Now in the back half is where he shines, but even then I find it is slightly one dimensional in his application. He is so good at reading the play and intercept marking that he often forgets about his forward. It there is a quick turnover and his forward is smart (Schache) he will get scored against.
When he drops his bundle, he really plays like crap.
I've seen on BF that he is in the top 5 kicking players in the under 18's, I also think his kicking has been overrated a little.

Where he goes in this draft will be very interesting and where he plays his best football will also be interesting.

I think his best AFL comparison is Jeremy McGovern.

7. Port Adelaide- Rhys Mathieson (Geelong Falcons) 185cm 79kg

Mathieson loves the hard stuff and is a real clearance player, exactly what Port need so I'm very happy to get him here (was happy with Hopper as well). His biggest strength is winning the hardball. He loves getting his hands dirty and is an excellent extractor. His kicking is a bit of a mixed bag but isn't horrible. It will get you from Point A to Point B more often than not but by no means would I call him one of the better kicks in the draft. He will kick to an area more than lacing out a teammate but certainly not horrible.

What I like about him is he has a real sense for when he can get the ball, moving himself into good spots all the time and when he knows he can't win the ball he will block or help out his mates.

He is clean at ground level and also good by hand. He hits the ball hard and rarely fumbles under pressure. He can take a tackle and dispose of the ball to a good option without panicking.

He isn't without flaws but he is a real accumulator and a really scrappy, ugly sort of footballer but the type you love on our team. I think he carves out a long career because of his ability to get his hands on the ball and scrap and compete and put pressure on.

Interesting player come draft day is Mathieson. Like you said he attracts the ball and moves to the right areas to get it, but in a contest his disposal by foot can be a bit scrappy

I'd rather have the ball than be chasing and trying to get it back off the opposition. Mathieson just finds it and unlike most accumulators he actually wins it himself instead of hanging around the back ala Kieran Lovell. And besides, its not like he is a turnover merchant. Its not pretty but it gets to where it needs to go.

I thought this was proceeding next week, hence why I missed my pick.

I am happy with Weitering he is the best available selection for mine at this pick and adds a lot to the Gold Coast defence.

Okay I will do a write up for Jacob Weitering tomorrow.
