Pick 63 - Fremantle - Bailey McKenzie New
Pick 63 Fremantle - Bailey McKenzie (192cm forward from Sandringham/Vic M)

I quite like McKenzie around the 40-50 range in this draft, I think he’s got the talent and ceiling to go even earlier but the consistency wasn’t quite there this season. He had a couple of huge games and a bunch of quiet ones too.

But a 190cm+ forward who is both athletic and elite in the air will always find his name on draft boards, often higher than performances may dictate. Just needs to do all the other stuff to complement his offensive game, the unrewarded running and defensive work.

More of a third tall up forward, I was initially thinking of targeting a developing KPP here - but a bunch went in the third round and there was nobody left I particularly wanted. So McKenzie’s high upside got him the selection, the other one I considered was Ned Bowman - as another talented but inconsistent forward.

Nice haul for Freo Chris!

Nice haul for Freo Chris!

Bit disappointed to hear this was only a fake draft because I’d be happy with Berry, Clarke and McKenzie - small/medium forwards, foot skills off half back and wing were my 3 areas to improve.

If Berry had have been taken, I’d have earmarked Jacob Newton for my last pick. So that was lucky.

I am a big fan of this kid and IMO he doesn't get the love he deserves on the draft board.
PH is player who thrives on and performs best in contested situations, he has clean hand and use them to great effect in close and tight where the game is there to be won.
He has a strength and toughness to his game, that reminds me a bit of Jack Viney lite.
Can kick goals when he loiters in the forward half.

When the game is up for grabs and you need a hard nut at the coal face, he ticks all the boxes for me.

Great value at this late stage in the draft.

Monocle

Don’t miss a heartbeat Blues fans.

This is a different Tom Bell.

Every time I edit the post, it tags the old Tom Bell, it was so annoying. I thought a mod was doing it to me as a joke.

The problems of having a namesake (and one who has a card at that.)

No chance St Kilda takes 1 mid and 3 talls with those picks. We already have King, Sharman, Caminiti, Owens and Keeler as tall forward options. We have no young mids on the list outside of Phillipou, Windhager and Garcia. We need a strong batch of young mids in this draft who will be ready to take over in a few years when Steele and Macrae are done.

Bas*ard ..... you have done it to me again.

Was driving home thinking I should be up and I will take a player who I thought should have been off the board by now and was excellent value.

Get home and some SOB has plucked him one pick before I could.

Excellent pick by the way.
Sorry but I think thatJosh Dolan would be an unlikely selection as we really do not need short & lightweight outside runners. I would prefer a player such as Hugh Boxshall given his height & size. Alternatively, Jack Ough would be a desirable selection but I doubt that he will be available at our 1st selection. Two other mid-fielders who could come under consideration - from my research - with our picks could be Nathan Sulzbergergiven (from Tasmania) with his size & height and/or Luke Urquhart being a fairly powerful & bullocking mid-fielder from WA. OK. Personally, I think that our our 1st & 2nd picks will be directed towards securing a tall key-position forward & a tall key-position defender, respectively, as they are our clear priorities in this draft given the post Grand Final comments of McRae & Leppitsch. The choice of a mid-fielder would also be determined by height & size & potential power given the clear trend towards tall & strong mid-fielders in the fashion of Cripps & Bontompelli amongst others in recent years. Anyway, goodnight & good luck.
