anyone know the preseason 2km times our best runners are performing at? I was looking over a few teams board for DT stuff and came across these times.

Cameron: 6.29 GCS
Gorringe::6.37 GCS
Jack Martin: 6.38 GCS
Chris Masten: 6.00 - Eagles
Damian Cavka: 5:58 - Eagles
Jack Newnes : 6:09 St.K
Steele Sidebottom : 5.54 Pies
Nathan Freeman : 6.08 Pies

Surely our best would be equivalent?

Anything sub 6 mins is moving, which means those guys could run sub 2:30 for a k, which is really moving. The interesting thing would be to see if they do repeat 2k and what the time differentials between run 1 and 2 are.

Nick ran 6.04
Close was 6.10 ish
Then Zorks, Paps and Zob but I didn't get their times
Nick was hoping for under 6 but said it was so hot when they ran it the air they were breathing in was so hot during the run it just cooked him
Still a bloody good run though from all the boys
We must have a pretty tough training regime for Beams to make comment at an interview in this regard!!

I thought it was mandatory for any player at a new club to say how it was the hardest preseason they have ever had :)
Yeah!! Gotta make the coach sound like he knows what he's doing.
Although with Leppa it's not hard to see that for ourselves!!

Great effort by Nick and the others, especially considering the conditions. From a team perspective though it would be nice though to see some of the other names coming through as well. Always seems to be the same five or six mentioned. Presumably Bewick would have been thereabouts too.

Not sure mate
Hard enough to get the info I get even from your own son!!

This is why club by club comparisons are quite misleading. There are so many variables - weather, terrain, prior training load. Even player motivation is a factor (ie some clubs may place more emphasis on it than others).

A measured article from the Roar despite the headline
It’s young talent time for the Brisbane Lions
For Brisbane fans, 2015 shapes as a year of excitement, having glimpsed possibilities in 2014 before experience was added to their young list in the off-season.

In 2014, Brisbane flexed their young muscles with their 54-point demolition of their rivals the Gold Coast Suns in Round 18, and had a hard-fought, emotion-driven victory over North Melbourne in Round 15.

The talent on their list can only improve over another preseason and one has to think that the Lions will be more consistent.

In Matthew Leuenberger and Stefan Martin the Lions have one of the most competitive ruck positions, and a well-mixed midfield featuring Dayne Beams, Pearce Hanley, Tom Rockliff. Allen Christensen and youngsters James Aish and rising star Lewis Taylor. It’s a solid foundation for success.

However the immediate future may not be so bright. Fans have the right to expect fewer 80-point losses, but only the most optimistic followers will hope for a trouble-free season.

I recall having a chat with a senior player early one december who was having a quiet chuckle at the new kids for giving their all in the initial time trial, leaving little room for "improvement" as the pre-season progressed.

Can't recall Simon Black winning too many time trials over the years and yet, I'd have backed him to outrun almost anyone if there was a footy to get at the end of it.

I don't think anyone sees a time trial wether it 2or 3 Ks as the goal but a yard stick by which a player and coaches can measure fitness at the start of pre season as well as post Christmas.
The guys that run the best 2 k trials as we know are not necessarily the players with the least to work on.
To me it shows up the guys that may not be working hard enough on fitness and they'll get shown up quick enough I spose.

I agree. Clubs would never publish it but I'd be more interested in whether any of our midfield types struggle.

It should also be a personal benchmark, moreso than anything else. A PB should be celebrated more than someone who wins because that shows improvement. I'd argue that Rich improving his best time by 10% would be a lot more exciting than (say) Paparone finishing top 3 yet again.

One thing a good time trial time indicates is a level of commitment and professionalism. We've had a lot of promising footballers over the years who simply weren't fit to play senior footy. If you get yourself in the top groups for running, chances are you have taken a highly professional approach to your preparation which indicates that your head is in the right space.
