FB Morris Roughead Wood
HB Murph Talia Biggs
C Bonti Wallis Macrae
HF Hunter Stringer Picken
FF Dalhaus Redpath Boyd

R Minson Libba Jong
INT Stevens Hrovat JJ
SUB M.Boyd

Reasoning:
- Gotta keep MBoyd around for his leadership. I like him as the sub because with such a young side, inevitably one of the youngins will struggle each game so he'd be good to inject early in the 3rd and see him rack up 15 possies against tired legs. I also much prefer an old player as the sub than a young player as they find it harder to instantly impact the game.

- Crameri assumed to be suspended. If not, comes in for Hrovat, with the forward line shifted around a bit.

- Interchange provides 3 players capable of playing on-ball or centre line, plus Stevens & Hrovat can give cover to the forward line while JJ gives some cover to the backline.

- Backline has a mix of talls/smalls/mediums and lockdown/rebounding defenders.

- Forward line have Big Jack leading from 20m out or so. Boyd in the goal sqaure. Dal buzzing around these two. Stringer playing as a roaming CHF and destroying peoples faces. Hunter pushing as a high HF, Picken on their best ball user from HB.

- Jong in as a Cooney/Griffen/Tutt replacement, ability to burst from congestion and break lines in an otherwise fairly pedestrian mid-field.

- Libba/Jong/Wallis/Bont/Macrae/Stevens/Hrovat/MBoyd as the main on-ball rotations

- Big Red as ruck relief.

I was about to post a similar team. I really rate this set up.

Some people have forgotten that Picken is a very good forward, he kicks goals and locks down dangerous players when he is down there. Wallis did a good job going head to head too in the middle. I know some people will say something like "Matthew Boyd gets 30 disposals a game in the middle" well have anyone actually noticed how slow our inside group is with Wallis, Boyd and on a lesser front Libba? Without the traitor we need speed in the middle hence why I have Jong who has had a solid preseason on the ball. There's then no room for Boyd if Stringer, Stevens, Hrovat etc get time on the ball too as they should. Boyd is going back to the backline under Bevo given that there has already been that article I don't think we will see him in the middle to much.

Dannnnnnnnnn I like the idea of putting Picken into the forward line and playing him on someone who is a dangerous rebounder he has succeeded at this before plus Boyd it looks like he is playing in defence I know some are against it but he needs to as I've stated before if Boyd sits in the middle for the game he may get 30+ disposals but it means guys like Hrovat, Jong, Stevens and other inside types miss out on game time (or games) and experience that they could have had so playing him as a small defender (as he has dond before) isn't a bad thing for the team in the long run it means our inexperienced midfield can get more experienced quicker while Boyd is still around.
I don't think we need a defensive forward... this year! Bullies are going to keep the ball going right through the big sticks this year!
So last year: "defensive forward".

Has Picken gone to LeCras before? The Frenchman killed us last time we went to Perth.
And Masten, and Priddis, and ..
That was one of the worst start to the season games... we just looked impotent as they were running forward and free out of the centre in waves.
We need more centre speed and accountabilty to stop the Weagles doing that again.

I hate "defensive forwards". Forwards need to be dangerous and kick goals. Applying forward pressure should be a non-negotiable, and have nothing to do with whether a player is a quality goal-kicker or not.

I'd play wood on lecras by the way TK. Roughie gets the resting ruckman, Talia gets darling and Morris gets kennedy.
At least they don't have Cox now, he was always a handful even as a resting ruckman.

New Bulldogs coach looks to buzzing 'mosquito fleet'
Jon Pirek, the Age

Western Bulldogs coach Luke Beveridge has backed his "mosquito fleet" to lead a Dogs uprising this season, and has revealed Tom Boyd can expect to spend time in the ruck to help ease the expected focus on the high-priced recruit.

Heading into his maiden season as a senior coach, Beveridge has worked assiduously behind the scenes to restore greater harmony among the playing group and club departments after a tumultuous end to 2014 when coach Brendan McCartney and captain Ryan Griffen left.

There will be a fierce spotlight on the teenaged Boyd, who was traded from Greater Western Sydney as part of a deal for Griffen on a seven-year contract worth more than $6 million. The power forward has played only nine senior matches but Beveridge could not be happier with his application through a pre-season where the Dogs have revamped their game plan.

However, with a string of tall young talent, including a revitalised Ayce Cordy, Jack Redpath, Tom Campbell and Jake Stringer, Beveridge has made it clear Boyd will need to earn his place, even in the NAB Challenge series.

"He has worked really hard. It's probably his first full pre-season. You probably always have a bit of an interrupted pre-season in your first year, when he was at the Giants," Beveridge told Fairfax Media.

"He has got through his work. It's going to take him a while to condition himself to the level of actually playing four quarters at an AFL level. But we couldn't be more pleased with his application. He is a mature head, a bit like Bonnie [Marcus Bontempelli]. Even his experience in the media, he talks like he has been involved for 10 years.

"He has had a couple of little collisions and has been opened up with cuts and broken fingers. He has soldiered on. He is preparing himself pretty well. Hopefully, we can get him involved pretty early and start to build what should be a pretty good career."

Boyd can also expect to be used in the ruck, a move which could free the 200-centimetre giant up if the opposition focus on him inside attacking 50 becomes too great.

"Boydy will have to play a bit in the ruck. He is not going to be able to survive as a key forward," Beveridge said. "We can't put him in cotton wool. He is actually quite a good stand-and-deliver ruckman. I haven't see him jump yet because we haven't had him doing that."

The Dogs won seven matches last season, one less than 2013, but hope to regain ground this year under new skipper Bob Murphy, despite losing more than 800 matches of experience and becoming the third-youngest side with 22 players having less than 25 senior games to their credit.

In order to do so, the Dogs are set, as Murphy said, to play more of an adventurous style, having focused on improving their grunt work under McCartney.

They have worked diligently on team defence and ball movement, particularly the last kick inside 50, and want to ramp up pressure on opponents, having let their rivals hit a target by foot 67.6 per cent of the time last year – the worst percentage of any side.

Beveridge has also wanted greater versatility and depth, with a focus on having more numbers through the midfield. He has dubbed the likes of Luke Dahlhaus and Nathan Hrovat his "mosquito fleet" – a name synonymous with the Carlton premiership sides of 1981-82.

"We have a pretty good 'mosquito fleet' – Dahlhaus, Hrovat, [Lachie] Hunter, [Mitch] Honeychurch and we, obviously have brought some new kids in, who I don't really want to talk about but you never know whether one of them is going to step up," Beveridge said. "Those boys will need to spend a little bit of time in the midfield, whether it's outside or in, I don't know."

He said key forward Stringer, who booted 26 goals last year, had enjoyed a strong pre-season, Cordy, out of contract at the end of the season, was challenging Will Minson for the No.1 ruck role, while Lin Jong continued to develop.

"Jongy seems like he is ready to go. There are still some areas of his game that will continue to improve but the signs are, he is powerful, quick, we think that he can make an impression," Beveridge said.

Rangy midfielder Bontempelli, last year's Rising Star runner-up who emerged as a future superstar, can expect to spend more time in the midfield, with Beveridge liking his "dimensions" to that of Fremantle match-winner, Nat Fyfe. Bontempelli has a slight edge in height and weight on his more experienced Docker.

"The possibility and probability that he is going to be one of the competition's best, I think it's right in our face, but we have got to manage that the right way and utilise that the right way, make sure we support him because he is the versatile type," Beveridge said.

I wonder if Beveridge sees Picken as our Puopolo?

Personally, I think Picken has not looked out of place on the rare occasion he has played up forward, but I'm having a lot more trouble envisioning Matty Boyd as a half back.

Clearly you have different ideas (or this is a wind up)? I'd like to hear them.

Off the top of my head without looking at our list boyd in a pocket is a massive laugh , you don't play a 201cm 104kg million dollar man in a foward pocket especially having redpath in his place who at the moment is a dud .. Wallis and jong both on ball haha that is a huge laugh so he wants 3 mids in the middle jong Wallis and libba if this happens we will lose by 100 points every week Hrovat has shown more than hunter and jong should be on the field would nearly play Murphy up foward and give someone a chance off half back that has good foot skills

I don't really think it matters too much either way the teams line up, Boyd is going to be the tall forward deep in the goalsquare and Stringer the leadup full forward who operates 25 - 55m from goal.

Well well well up to your old tricks :)

Redpath is a Dud...
201cm in a forward pocket ...Tippet..
100 point loss if we had Jong and Wallis on the ball....

As i have said before your a collingwood supporter hiding as a bulldog.... can I have your number so I can give it to the dud..sure Red would like a word:mad:

Wallis is a lock in the midfield.

Jong is on the field: where would you play him instead of in the midfield? Because Libba and Wallis are locks.

Boyd could excel having Redpath take some of the heat off of him.

Hrovat is still in the team, where people are named on the team sheet means nothing.

Don't think Wallis is a lock pretty sure you don't know beveridge ? Can't see Wallis jong and boyd all playing at the same time our backline are terrible kicks and so are jong Wallis and boyd , only way I can see boyd in a pocket is if he isn't upto it this year and is a decoy for redpath or stringer and with hrovat I just rate him higher than the others and with reports his flying should be on the field

Redpath has done nothing at afl level if anyone says else wise they have no idea Tippett and franklin play chf and ff and won't go into the others as its obvious

A team built off of off-season happenings so far (note - I don't necessarily agree with everything here, but this is a team built around who's impressing and what we've heard about new roles etc, mixed in with some of my own opinion):

M. Boyd Roughead Morris
Biggs Talia Murphy

Bontempelli Liberatore Macrae

Picken Redpath Stringer
Hrovat T. Boyd Dahlhaus

Minson Wallis Goodes

Jong Wood Stevens
Johannisen

EMG: Cordy Dickson Hamling

Foot skills are a massive issue, as is pace, but we're going to have trouble with both of them regardless of what team we play. Focus on playing the best players available. Winning the contested ball, team defense and a coherent forward structure are going to be vital to any victories playing a team like this.

I must of missed it but what is this basis that Picken is going to be played as a small defensive forward this season. A lot of people are suggesting this could be happening but I'm unsure where this noise is coming from.

Also word of Goodes starting this season frightens me only room for one of him or M.Boyd, can't add anymore slow inside mids into our team already its stacked. Also no room for Hunter, hes been flying this preseason.
