It is, but I wonder how much impact the advantage membership system has made. Might have less if people had to make more of an effort to sign up again, but impossible to measure and that's why they put the system in place in any case (though obviously they wouldn't have forseen such an extreme situation).
There was a pretty decent jump after the verdict from memory.

The auto renew got me. Would have been 4 less.

I reckon it'd be close to 5k.

Anything above 50k is a miracle imo.

Dons fans defy logic. Again.

Essendon, still in reputation repair mode and consensus tip for 2016 ladder anchor, will hit 50,000 members in record speed this weekend.

It is the latest logic-defying development to affirm the club's inner sanctum view that while more than a quarter of the playing list is temporarily lost to drug bans, fan support is apparently undiminished.

Must have killed her writing that. It's not really that illogical though - unless you're a moron like Sam I guess.

In the past week the Bombers launched a new Make a Stand campaign, enlisting untarnished club legends and turning focus to a brighter future.

Meanwhile Carlton, once considered a competition powerhouse like Essendon, is still struggling to win back disillusioned fans. The Blues have signed 42,111 members for this year according to the club website.

Must be because the majority of your fellow supporters are of the "fair weather" variety Sam. :thumbsu:

55 away from 50,000. Amazing effort by out supporters.
Just disappointing reading the Hawthorn, Collingwood and Richmond numbers.
Given all the different membership options clubs offer I reckon the important thing is revenue from memberships. I saw a table on this a while back but can't remember where.

No need to be disappointed with other teams membership numbers, there's plenty of stuff in house to be disappointed about...

Hawthorns been winning flags, the pies and Richmond are the best in the business of selling the message of hope to supporters. Hopefully this year the youngsters can start selling our message of hope, next year our club can start winning games, then membership takes care of itself.

However it is amazing and good to know we have atleast 50K willing to support the club in the worst of times.

Not to mention the biggest reason, their home ground can seat all those members, ours can't. Before the move to Docklands Essendon were often the highest attended club over the season.

Not Winning games is the biggest reason by a mile.. I don't even think our home ground being at Etihad is even a reason not to sign up.

Do you honestly think 30K more people would sign up if we were still middle/lower part of the ladder and moved to the MCG? there's just no way that would happen.

It's like Pantene. It was that way for those three clubs and it would be for us too.

Don't Collingwood have sort of deal where because they are sponsored by a jumper maker, they give away a free membership when you buy a jumper or something like that which inflates their numbers a bit?

I reckon the total gate numbers or revenue are better indicators of support and last year, despite our poor form, we were the second highest supported Victorian club at the turnstile just prior to the seasons end. Not bad for a club that has been kicked to the curb for three consecutive years.
