I'm still confused by things like why we play West Coast and Port twice before Adelaide even once, I would have preferred a little softer repeat oppositions but meh, anyone 16th and up is probably going to be considered a tough game until we prove otherwise.

I'm the same and admit I too preferred it when all sides played each other once i.e. rounds 1 - 17 and then the remaining 5 games in rounds 18 - 23 were against those sides you're playing twice.

Meeting the Saints in round 23 for the first and only time in quite possibly the last game of the AFL home and away season is quite an oddity.

I know it happens every year - but have a look at the Pies draw, what luxury it must be to only travel 5 times in a season. Although I'm looking forward to the false hope their easy start will give them like the 8-2 Pies of this year

(Would take an 8-3 start again next year)

Genuine question: Does the Gabba crowd fire-up most against Collingwood?

Of late it is whoever we actually look like we are a chance against. But we do like sticking it to the Pies more than most.

Each club plays 5 clubs twice. If we assign points based on last year's ladder position (minor premier - 1pt, wooden spoon 18 pts), we can have a bit of an order for who we play twice.

I know, flawed system, but better than nothing. So, in order (remember, lower numbers are tougher opponents):

30 - Adelaide
32 - Hawthorn
34 - North
40 - GWS, West Coast
42 - Freo
43 - Richmond
44 - Collingwood
45 - Sydney, Bulldogs
53 - Port
54 - Melbourne
55 - Brisbane
56 - Geelong
57 - Gold Coast
60 - St Kilda
62 - Carlton
63 - Essendon

So not 2nd last, but still, last year was much worse. I did this last year too, and I'm pretty sure we topped the ladder. If not, we were bloody close...

I like – seen it somewhere before?

But… it can change, MEL last year [2014] finished 17th and the points allocated would have been 63 but… if you used the same system and allocated the points at the end of this year it would have reduced to only 44 points.

In 2015 MEL played Freo, COL, WBD, GWS and STK twice –
  • In 2014 they finished 4th, 11th, 14th, 16th and 18th respectively – equalling 63 points.
  • Using their 2015 finishes of 1st, 12th, 6th, 11th & 14th – the points totalled only 44.
Yep – like most things we can guess what should and shouldn’t be easy/hard but didn’t William Hill offer $100 million to pick the ladder? Did anyone get it correct?

How the hell did Essendon get any Friday nights let alone three? Their "bravery" being rewarded?

Quite a late bye for us this season: round 15. We are in the last group. Mind you, all the byes seem later than they have in the past.

The first time in a while we won't have St Kilda at the Gabba as well I think?

Might be wrong but I think the last time we played St Kilda at the Etihad was 2009, James Polkinghorne kicked a couple, as did Cornelius. Also was the last season we played finals, St Kilda was going great that year.

I hope the club looks at that draw and decides to re-sign Leppa ASAP. That is a really tough draw. I am only seeing 3 games that I'd be confident we can win. That said if we show the level of improvement I know is in us we can win a lot more. The first 8 weeks is absolutely brutal.
If you think we can only win 3 games then I don't think the draw has any impact on our ability to win games!

I think the fixture is very good.
(1) Based on finishing positions at the end of the H&A season the teams we play twice finished 2, 9, 10, 16, 18. That's pretty balanced, nothing to complain about there, unless you're looking for a free ride.
(2) We certainly have a harder home draw compared to away draw, but how is this a bad thing? If the lions play some half decent football, then the quality of football at the Gabba will be better overall which should attract more people through the gate (not necessarily only die hard lions supporters). Better than seeing an endless run of drab games against Melbourne, St. Kilda, Carlton etc. Added to that, we might actually snag a surprise win or two against a top side at home (rather that getting repeated floggings on the road), while hopefully taking it to lower ranked sides when playing away.
(3) We have a very good balance of home / away games across the season. The only time we have 2 away games in a row is either side of the bye.

No doubt we have a tough opening to the season playing 4 finalists and Geelong in the first 6 weeks. This will surely put the pressure on Leppa because the chances of being near the bottom of the ladder with 1 & 5 are high - but when you finish 17, pretty much any draw the following year will be tough!

We could possibly only win a couple games again next year. Missing out on Playing the Bombers, Saints and Demons at home is a major disadvantage.
Play decent footy, we should beat them playing away. We have a better chance of beating those sides playing away, than we do beating any top 8 side playing away.

With an optimistic hat on, I can get us to 8 or 9 wins. This has us winning away against Melbourne, Carlton, GC, Essendon, St Kilda, and at home against Gold Coast, Collingwood, Port, Carlton. We won't win all those games, but this is what we should be aiming for.

I'm so negative nancy at the moment, I hate the fixture

Correct. It was Ace's debut. Power and someone else were late withdrawls and I thought we would get flogged. We were leading midway through the last quarter until Milne kicked 3 late goals.

Living in SA I'm pretty happy to have the 2 games down here for the first time in 5 years+

Pretty annoyed about the rough start which could kill off any glimmer of hope the fans have. But who knows we may be able to get a surprise win or two while we are fresh and the top teams potentially going into the game complacent.

having the Blues late in the season could be another Tank game... bottom teams really should play each other earlier in the season IMO

Overall, I don't mind the draw... Good commercial aspects and different matchups with no BS Tassie or other random location
