No doubt things will change in the future but I have a gut feeling that apples will have a serious breakout season. His size is looking great and he has the aggression to play as a lockdown KPD.

However I'm not against a cheap mature insurance policy. Tim Mohr could very well be this option

Also I'm very keen to see how Tom young does this year in the NEAFL. Won the B&F and is a KPD. May lack a few cms to be a true KPD but is the very definition of a cheap mature KPD who is already living in Sydney
Apples.Like that as a nickname.Hope he stays.He Was looking real good early in the preseason . Haven't seen much footage of him lately though.Hope he has a great season and stays.Was just posing a possible situation

Agree Mohr fully fit and in his best form would be very handy.I hope im wrong but I have my doubts.I still have the image in my mind of him doing his Acl in the Neafl.To me he looked like he didn't move laterally instinctively and instead ran into a tackle then moved laterally and did his knee.I was watching just near a bunch of players and I was more shattered for Mohr than the players.They just looked up from there phones for a second then went straight back on them.Bloody Gen Y.

Hope he gets back but I think he's a fair way off.Hope im wrong

Im looking at 2018-19.Patfull andSJ will be gone.The end can come quickly post 30 so Mummy Shaw and Griffen could be gone.I believe the club will primarily build with what we already have.However when looking at our premiership window in a few years time Gubby and Cameron will want a couple of extra experienced players who are currently 27 -28.All premiership teams have players around the 30 mark.We only have Palmer in this range at the moment.

Hypothetically say Marchbank doesnt re sign and Mcarthy will be gone.There are a host of free agents Centre Half Backs out there this year.Bring in Macreadie and an experienced free agent.We will also be a much more attractive destination for free agents from now on.This in my opinion is closer to the reality of what will evolve over the next few years compared to what people would like to happen.The vast majority will stay a few will leave and we will hand pick recruits to suit our needs with the draftpicks we acquire from trading players.

See, I'm pretty much of the opinion that it's time to dance with the ones what brung us.

You're already talking about next year without seeing what this year brings. And in the middle of the so called premiership window, even further down the line, the players you're talking about us needing will already be here.

If someone of the caliber of Stevie J comes along, by all means, but I think we're beyond the Josh Hunts of this world.

But let's have a look at this year and see, shall we.

Just a bit of random information for everyone but based on picks we currently hold for the 2016 draft based on 2015 ladder positions we have the following points at our disposal without making a single trade

7 = 1644
8 = 1551
9 = 1469
26 = 729
30 = 629
44 = 362
58 = 170

Total 6554

Basically we can afford to bid on all 5 players if they receive bids in the first round in succession taking into account the 20% discount.

Anyone still doubt the wisdom of Gubby?

bit more information and some vision of our top 4 academy boys.

Four of the most promising talents in the PM CAPITAL GIANTS Academy have spent the week living as professional footballers at the GIANTS’ Sydney Olympic Park headquarters.

Henty’s Harrison Macreadie, Kobe Mutch from Gol Gol and Albury duo Zach Sproule and Will Setterfield trained all week with the GIANTS as part of the NAB AFL Academy program that has seen the best underage talents spend time at AFL clubs across the country.

2015 has been a big year for the four PM CAPITAL GIANTS Academy youngsters.

As part of the NAB AFL Academy, they travelled to New Zealand to represent Australia on ANZAC Day and were part of a curtain-raiser to the AFL Grand Final at the MCG.

All four players also played in every game of the NAB AFL Under-18 National Championships for the NSW-ACT Rams, and are eligible to line up again in the carnival in 2016.

After seeing four of his Rams teammates and fellow PM CAPITAL GIANTS Academy members drafted to the club last month, 17-year old Zach Spoule said he can see a clear pathway to the top.

“To see guys like Jacob Hopper play, it’s inspiring to see how hard he works and how committed he is to the game and that’s why we went so high in the draft and why he’s here and why he’s making a name for himself already,” Spoule said.

“That’s the kind of thing I’m going to try and achieve over the next year.”

Sproule is a tall forward, in the mould of Nick Riewoldt, who leads up to the ball well . He played for the Albury Tigers and Murray Bushrangers when not representing the NSW-ACT Rams in 2015.

Kobe Mutch is a smooth moving outside midfielder with silky skills on both sides of his body who plays like GIANTS wingman Lachie Whitfield.

The 17-year old said he loved every minute he spent at the GIANTS’ Learning Life Centre.

“It’s been the best week of my life. It’s been good working with all the boys and seeing how professional they are and what an elite environment is."

Key defender Harrison Macreadie, who has been compared to Geelong’s Andrew Mackie, said he enjoyed learning off some of the GIANTS defenders.

“It’s a great experience to work alongside so many professional football players like Heath Shaw, Phil Davis that have been around the club for a while and you get into habits of what they do and get to see up close how they became such good footballers.”

The 17-year old still goes to school at Billabong High School and played for his local team Henty in the Hume League Grand Final.

Will Setterfield is a tall midfielder who has the ability to play as both an inside and outside player and combines good endurances with the ability to win the contested football too.

Setterfield, 17, said he learnt plenty off the GIANTS’ midfield brigade this week.

“Dylan Shiel, Stephen Coniglio and Callan Ward have been huge for me this week. They’re real leaders around here and have really helped me out."

The quartet will return for another week at the club in January.

Quick question, hope it's welcome.

With your reliance on Mumford (Lobb/Downie/Simpson yet to prove themselves, which of course they may very well do), as well as your wealth of first/second round picks this year, do you think you might take one of the promising rucks available? There seems a couple first round options unlike other years (Goddard, Strnadica).

Obviously with the discount you get on them and the lack of go-home worries taking academy players is a solid tactic, but I'm just trying to think of a situation where you might deviate from it and thought this might be one.

Took young Matty Flynn from the academy last year - you can only carry so many rucks, even if they are unproven (and he's shaping up nicely)

Agree with the previous posters. If there's one position I don't think GWS will look for in the 2016 draft it's a ruck. Young Flynn looks good though very early days - if we take a ruckman it would most likely be an experienced one via trade or FA and it would be because one or both of Mumford & Simpson fell over.

I wouldn't be surprised if we traded a 2016 draft pick for a 2017 one (e.g. Melbourne traded out their 2016 one and likely looking to trade back in) and stuck to a fairly straightforward draft selection of between 3 & 5 kids, all academy, with the talls Macreadie & Sproule, and midfielders Setterfield, Mutch & Byrne the current frontrunners. Of course, I'd never be surprised if Gubby pulled a complete rabbit out of the draft, but a ruckman would be a purple rabbit for mine!

Write up courtesy of SCpaige

Harrison Macreadie

Height: 195cm, Weight: 82kg, DOB: 11/4/1998
Recruited from: Hently/GWS Academy
Position: Tall Defender

A GWS Academy member who is one of the best defenders in this year’s draft class, Harrison Macreadie is a competitive monster, and whilst he only tips the scales at 82kg – it’s his courage in the air, strength through his core and ability to stand his ground that wins him plaudits. Macreadie could just as easily progress into the midfield or on a wing, and should see some opportunity there in his final bottom-age year to show recruiters just how high his ceiling goes. Blessed with poise, composure and an elite kick – the Giants will be stoked to welcome him to the fold later in the year.

Write up courtesy of Chris25 on a player we havnt really spoken about

Connor Owen-Auburn (179cm, 79kg from Pennant Hills). Smart player with good hands, he's a strong tackler and should feature at the Championships this year.

No murmurings from the club regarding contracts yet?
Hope to see something tied in with the game next Thursday, hoping for press conference on Wednesday with Ward

Interesting article on the afl website today

Basically we will run the smallest recruitment team in the afl this year. Makes sense given we have a very strong academy class and will most likely only be watching these players and next years academy kids.

Here is an interesting quote from the article:

The club has strong batches of academy prospects coming through over the next two drafts as well, giving it a chance to stockpile a more homegrown list with New South Wales talent.

Tall defender Harrison Macreadie already appears one of the most credentialed key position players in this year's draft and has moved to Sydney to be closer to the Giants' headquarters.

Zac Sproule, Will Setterfield and Kobe Mutch are also members of the NAB AFL Academy who are tied to the Giants, while Jarrod Brander, Nathan Richards and Charlie Spargo are among the talents available to the club in 2017.

Looks like Macreadie is going to have a lot of extra training and club time this year which leaves me extremely excited!

I don't have an issue with the above, I just hope that they don't get too blinkered and assume academy-only will cover everything. We need to be clear-headed enough to recognise if we have a deficiency in the list, and far-sighted enough to assess the future prospects of academy kids, and go out and draft elsewhere if needed. Or trade in to cover such gaps - which gets us back to focussing on the academy kids for the draft. I don't have any complaints in how the recruiting department has been doing their job to date.

I'll be interested to see how much howling there is about the academy this year, particularly given the Sunshine situation. In many ways, how that has played out has exemplified the northern states' arguments for academies (if the Brisbane 5 & Caddy hadn't already done so), although most traditional-state BF posters seem to consider them entirely separate issues!

This year appears to be a little more balanced (so far, at least) in terms of the ranking of the academy kids. Last year had so much focus on Hopper and Kennedy both being top 10 potential, Flynn very highly rated as a ruckman (though not expected to go high in the draft), and then HH a surprise third first round pick. Essentially, if we could take an academy product roughly ranked 1st, 2nd, 3rd & 4th round each year, unless we've traded out to get higher picks (and that's a different beef from everyone about the early drafting largesse to GWS) then we aren't getting any advantage, only knowing who we are getting is less likely to want to go home.

Sad to see him go but he has contributed so much to this club and will also help with identifying his successor. Perhaps this is the reason there hasn't been any contract extension news as of yet this off season.

Oh and to the lolmantle supporters (excluding simmofreo) glad to see how much you guys still obsess about our club.

Gone for family reasons..... gulp

Yeah that was going to open a can of worms.

But he has served the club well. Have no problems with him leaving.

We will have a complete reshuffle/rebuild of the backroom by the time trade week comes back.

All good.
