There was a throw away line by Gil on AFL 360 about a month ago where he said that for the first time next year everyone, all 18 clubs, will be on the same salary cap, to which I said "wait what? We have extra players, how does that work"

Someone (I think Dlanod) pointed out that our cap might be in line with the extra payment per player but no cola or other concession to the cap that we might have had. But yesterday on trade radio our list manager Craig Cameron made mention of needing to offload players to bring us in line with other clubs.

Public announcement?

Never heard one.

Not sure there was one.

Emma Quayle also mentioned in a tweet that were inline with everyone else next year

McGrath will firm as the number 1 pick after the combine where he will absolutely kill it.

Kudos for our list management for identifying him as the pea well before anyone else but it will probably count for little.

If we miss him and have the 2 early picks we must take Ainsworth for needs and possibly Scrimshaw.

If Essendon keep their pick and we end up with 3 (from Dockers for 7) and 5 i think it may be:

1 - McGrath
2 - Bowes (Suns)
3 - McLuggage
4 - Ainsworth
5 - Scrimshaw

In this scenario would probably end up with Ainsworth, Scrimshaw, Setterfield, Perryman and Macreadie. Pretty good haul!

Alternatively if we managed 3 and 5 and gave that up for 1 and 19 we get:

McGrath, Setterfield, Perryman, and Macreadie. Also very nice.

So question- I'm hearing we need to reduce he list size to 38 but what about salary cap? Are we in line with everyone else or are we still on a higher pay packet?

I believe it can be between 38-40 on the main list.
Also Craig Cameron did say we would go with 40 on the main list yesterday.

Combine hasn't started yet...

Listening to Dodoro today I am pretty confident Essendon will be keeping the number 1 pick.

He said its the first time in their history they've had it and it would take something really compelling to part with it.

He did also say that they were looking for a midfielder that was both inside and outside which I thought was very interesting.

Of the players available the only guy that really fits that profile is Will Brodie who the Dons have been rumoured to be into for some time.

Will Brodie is 189 cms so is basically a perfect replacement for Jobe Watson (190 cms) and 31 years old, he is the tall mid that the Dons won't have and makes more sense than McCluggage (184 cms) or McGrath (179 cms).

If Essendon took Brodie our main challenge would be securing Pick 3 from Freo and exchanging it for Pick 7 which would still enable them to get Tim English as a replacement for Aaron Sandilands. We also pick up pick 5 from Carlton in a trade of pick 16 and Marchbank.

The draft would then look like this:

Pick 1 Essendon - Will Brodie
Pick 2 Gold Coast - Jack Bowes (after bid from Brisbane
Pick 3 Brisbane - Hugh McCluggage
Pick 4 GWS - Andrew McGrath
Pick 5 GWS - Ben Ainsworth (from Carlton)
Pick 6 Gold Coast - Sam Petrevski-Seton (from Richmond)
Pick 7 Fremantle - Tim English (from GWS)

If we secured McGrath, Ainsworth, Setterfield and Perryman I think Eddie McGuire would combust and I would need a few moments and some kleenex to clean up afterwards!

Very unlikely Brisbane don't take McGrath if he is available

I'm happy we aren't looking likely to get #1 if he doesn't play every game he will cite leaving for opportunity and we will get bugger all for him as he isn't a KPF. If he plays really well then a Victorian team swoops with a big money offer and we get bugger all for him.

Stay local

a) I can't see Brisbane bidding on Bowes at pick 2, especially when Hanley gets traded there. This is pretty irrelevant to the scenario though.
b) There's strong word Brisbane wants McGrath over McCluggage. This probably ties into Schwab putting pick 2 on the table - if GWS gets pick 3, Brisbane would rather have McCluggage and a pick upgrade than McGrath, but if it's just between the two they'll take McGrath.

We will take one of the Mc's IMO

Feels a bit like the top 6 picks are the key this year. Last year anything up to about pick 15 was good value and hard to get wrong.

Then, in three years time we'll be marvelling how all the teams let pick number 46 (now a young star) get through so late...

My mail Gibbs to adelaide for pick 14. Pick 14 to giants for Marchbank. Carlton has also suggested Corr and Marchbank for pick 5

Where exactly is your mail on Gibbs from? Secondly, Carlton will be wanting a lot more than Corr and Marchbank for pick 5. No way in the world we give up 5 for those two alone.

If Fremantle are keen on English, then they could be downgrading to pick 7 as he will almost certainly be there. With Brisbane's priority pick being 19, if GWS are really keen on McGrath (especially if he is favourite for the number 1 pick after the combines), then they would upgrade to pick 3 and try to strike a deal with Carlton for pick 5. With SOS there and considering the good relationship between Carlton and GWS that they'd like to maintain, I can see that happening. Essendon would then trade 1 and 20 for 3 and 5 and GWS can get McGrath.

It would then go:

Pick 1 GWS - Andrew McGrath
Pick 2 Gold Coast - Jack Bowes (after bid from Brisbane)
Pick 3 Brisbane - Hugh McCluggage
Pick 4 Essendon - Will Brodie
Pick 5 Essendon - Sam Petrevski-Seton (from Carlton)
Pick 6 Gold Coast - Ben Ainsworth (from Richmond)
Pick 7 Fremantle - Tim English (from GWS)

All clubs would be satisfied with that. If Brisbane are keen on SPS, then swap McCluggage and SPS.

Why are we chasing pick 1 when the bombers aren't interested in McGrath anyway? Seems like the deal would be to chase Brisbane's pick 2- we get our player and hey get more picks in the first round. Everyone wins

That said I've gone on record saying I'm not keen on trading up to get him

Its official now
Greater Western Sydney lost access to more than $1.1 million extra salary cap space over the next two years as part of the AFL's new competitive balance policy. The Giants' total player payments have been reduced two years ahead of the schedule laid out when the newest club's draft and salary cap concessions were announced in 2009, contributing to a list squeeze this year.
