I am also not concerned about times for all the factors spoken about. I guess the concern is around young blokes with no pre season behind them pantsing more senior players.

And time isnt really as relevant as people make out... I wonder what the fastest time a player covers 3km during gameday would be. AFL is more about gut running and repeat efforts. Speak to any AFL player and they will tell you the Gameday match fitness is where they really get their fitness from. Preseason is just to get some run in their legs
I agree 100%. I'd be surprised if outside of the actual time trial itself they run 3km consecutively the entire preseason (other than some extras on their own).

While a running test gives a guide to an individuals aerobic ability and improvements that are made in that area, the only sport it would translate directly to in a big way in regards to actual performance would be running. And triathlon I suppose. Tom Rockliff is the prime example. He's not a great pure runner but he never gets left behind in a game.

I personally just find the times they run interesting as I'm a runner and thought others might be interested.

I popped down but I am not as talented as others with doing write ups. In regards to Christensen he pulled out on the main oval during the 3km run. Not sure what happened only noticed he was lying on the ground. Trainers ran over and he wasn't grabbing at anything just very slow to walk off. Hope it's not serious or back related. Poor old Rhys was bringing up the rear in the run but did notice in the contested stuff he was front and square which was pleasing and can see the 'footballer' comments. Hipwood is seriously skinny and don't think he will get a game this year purely out of safety and if he plays in the white clash strip might get mistaken for a goal post.
Considering we haven't heard any reports on this hopefully it is nothing serious. I wonder if it some as minor as the heat getting to him. Perhaps some mild heat stroke.

Yeah I just use it as a guide as to who is up and about and completing each session... Match simulations is the time I start to really get excited about individual players preseason form

I would think "times" are an indicator of medium distance endurance. Probably reasonably important.

That said, first day back from Xmas/New year break, I wouldn't have expected much.

Hi guys i have a piece of Jonathan brown memorabilia i might be looking to sell, anyone know were i could post to people interested

It took me a while, but once I was able to ascertain there was a vacuum of solid facts, then and only then I felt more comfortable in passing down judgements.

I miss Richard Newell. Gave me that warm fuzzy time trial feeling running low 9s.

Yeah im struggling to find how much its worth though i have no idea
There is a guy who writes for the Sunday Age and who lives in Cooraminta Street Brunswick....a Fitzroy diehard, who values stuff ,each week they feature a valuation in a small section in their sports section. His name is Rick Milne I think.

brad dalziell, shaun hart are another 2 great time trial runners that come to mind. did't blacky hold or still does the 2km club record?
goes to show as in brad and richards case, great time trial form doesn't always mean great footballer. as has been stated many times, take a footballer over an athlete every time.

I think you'll find there are 4 'D's in Bradddd. ;)

Not sure about 2km, but Richard had the 3km covered - his Lions profile page shows a 9:19  preseason record in 2012.

EDIT: Dalziell, Newell, Kieran King head to head would've been awesome.

I've played footy with Keays' older brother in the past and despite his penchant for a dart or ten on a weekend he had no qualms finishing at the top end of the group in running. Obviously a genetic component there, I reckon Ben has the potential to become another perennial time trial king like a Steele Sidebottom at Collingwood.

I think a time trial conducted just before pre season games in Feb would be a fantastic indicator of where we're ACTUALLY at in terms of the running, and anyone trying to doubt Damien Austin this early on is nuts.

Bit hard when there is none to be won.
I'm well aware but don't some people actually declare a winner with wins and margins as a bit of bullshit talk ?I think we unofficially won last year or the year before and officially won 3 or 4 years ago.We have been doing well !
