Thoughts on Wines for Pick 1 straight up? Port lose a tonne of salary cap pressure and could on-trade it for 3 and one or both of the two picks GWS has in the teens and go to the draft with 3, 9, 15 (and potentially 16 depending on GWS' desperation). Essendon get a gun inside mid who fits our age profile.
It makes absolutely no sense for port to trade wines. He wants to stay, we want to keep him. Probably no. 1 untouchable on our list

I reckon both would rather keep what they have.

Port because Wines is a gun inside mid as you say.

Essendon because they have the opportunity to take 3 picks into the top 20 of a reportedly very strong draft and finish off their list if they use pick 1 elsewhere.

Now that McCarthy trade is done, what do Freo do hypothetically from here, this is what im thinking:
  • Compo pick received from Mayne to Pies -> Hawks for Hill
  • 3rd round pick, 42 -> Cats for Kersten
  • 2nd round (from GWS), 32, -> Port for Lobbe (to replace Sandi long term, ruck stocks are shit)
Close, the 32 will go to dogs for Hamling

We don't need Lobbe who is worse then Clarke + Lloyd already ruled him out on trade radio

Alright trade scenario I have come up with.
Geelong send picks 37+41 to Gold Coast, this equals 895 points.
Gold Coast send pick 22 to Richmond, this equals 845 points.
Richmond send Deledio to Geelong

Geelong gain: Deledio Lose: picks 37 + 41
Richmond gain: pick 22 Lose: Deledio
Gold Coast gain pick 37 + 41 (more points) Lose: Pick 22

Thoughts?

Seems fair, just leaves Geelong with no early draft picks. Their first pick would be 55.

West Coast: S.Mitchell, H.Ballantyne
Fremantle: B.Hill
Hawks: pick 12 (from west coast)

West Coast and Freo are not drunk!

Typical ridiculously one sided trade.

No worries. Essentially, it's TOB+ mid/late 2nd rd pick for Clurey. I see HAW having an excess of 2/3 tall forwards and Port have an excess of backmen (Jonas, DBJ, AUstin, Bonner, Clurey, Hombsch, Pittard without Trengrove, Hartlett, Broadbent and not counting Krakouer or O'Shea). Port also just got rid of Schulz and Butcher. TOB would fit in nicely next to Dixon, with Ryder and Westhoff rotating through. He's also a SA kid.

Looking at the Hawthorn list, in two years Gibson, Hodge, Burgoyne will likely be gone; Frawley, Stratton and Birchall will be 29-30; Doc will be 27. I'm not sold on Brand and Kurt. A straight swap of TOB for one of the young backmen might be on the cards.

Port wouldn't want to give up a starting 22 key defender at the age of 22 for a key forward who looks unlikely to make it and a pick in the 30's. No way.

No chance port would do that deal for a multitude of reasons.

Would only be giving TOB and late 2nd up for Trengove. Would be willing to do a straight swap of TOB for Clurey. I've never seen Clurey play though so i don't know how good he is.
I might have more trust in Brand and Kurt than you.

Lolololol

Tob and a late second is dreaming if you think Trengove is touchable for that. tob also wouldn't get you clurey.

Actually, for Port, it would have been TOB+25 for Clurey. So it's an early/mid second round pick. Think that's slight overs.

We'll agree to disagree on TOB as unlikely to make it. He's not built to be the No 1 forward. As I said, he'd be good as a second/third forward next to a power forward like Dixon with Westhoff/Ryder rotating through. Unfortunately, Hawthorn didn't have Schoenmakers or Roughead this season. Is there a forward on Port's list ready to play with Schulz and Butcher gone?

Do you think Clurey will be starting next season? Just wondering who is going to miss out from Jonas, Byrne-Jones, Austin, Bonner, Clurey, Hombsch, Pittard, Broadbent, Trengrove, Krakouer, Hartlett - and not O'Shea. I'd see DBJ, Pittard, Broadbent, Trengrove as definite. Probably Kraouker although others will disagree. So if you play Hammer forward/mid and start Clurey, would you move Austin or Bonner? Hombsch and Jonas would be pretty good depth.

Agree. Although purely as a defender, I think he has 'only' been around average. Before this year, he seemed to miss a chunk of games every season. Enhanced his value massively as a legit ruck.

Anyway, thought HAW and POR could help each other out. HAW has TOB as an extra second/third forward. POR has extras down back.

Not sure how krak, bonner , Hartlett , broadbent , dbj etc hold out a key defender. Or how our best defender in hombsch is considered depth. A bit out on your port knowledge there.

Our key defender depth is actually pretty good but it is Trengove , hombsch , clurey , Austin , Howard as a swingman forward / backman and ruck and jonas.

From the sounds of it though we are gonna try Trengove forward ruck this year and play Austin hombsch clurey as our back 3 talls.

Port wouldn't part with clurey easily as he has a bit of promise and already shown enough to be a 200 game defender. Also if Trengove was in any way at all gettable by a vic team the offers would far outweigh 2nd round picks + unproven prospects.

Just meant backs/defenders. I considered Trengrove the best key defender. Can't see Trengrove being a great forward mainly due to his kicking. Hopefully for Port, he proves me wrong. Dougal Howard probably won't be back playing AFL next year so that leaves pretty much no tall forward depth.

We have no key forward depth.

Still wouldn't trade a 200 game defender for a guy who isn't yet proven in a position most prospects fail in.
