Don’t tell me you gave more that that for Soldo ?.

What else did you give up for him ?!.
The Tigers have received picks 41 and 49, a future second-round pick tied to Fremantle as well as Port's future fourth-round pick in exchange for Soldo, with the Power also getting Richmond's pick 50 in return.

Yep. So 49 and 50 basically cancel each other out, so it was a second rounder, pick 41 and a future 4th. Probably a bit overs, but we were trading for a guy in contract that was our first ruck until he got injured, missed a chunk of footy and then got injured again after coming back.

Darcy fort today showed the value of having a solid, mature back up ruck ready to go in case of injury. I would prefer we kept soldo unless the trade was something worthwhile, not a throw away pick.

Yes but fort was traded for a 3rd rounder in contract and soldo was worth about the same but you overpaid.

He was traded by Melbourne to the Swans for a 2nd rounder.

What part of that was a salary cap dump ?.
The Melbourne trade was a salary dump in a way because he was eating 600k of cap playing VFL. Collingwood in 2022 didn't want him and wanted to dump his cap. Melbourne in 2023 came to the same conclusion but also Grundy realised he was the backup so he wanted out as well.

He was worth what Richmond would let him go for. Yes we overpaid, but we literally had no rucks left on our list so it was an important move.

I'm not sure you needed him when you were bringing in sweet. A cheap state league backup on low cash would have sufficed.

Sweet was the cheap state league backup for Soldo.

Soldo was clear first choice at the start of the year and would have remained so if he didn't get injured. Still think he offers more in terms of around the ground marking and scoreboard impact than Sweet but Soldo is definitely more lumbering and less able to impact the contest with taking it out of the ruck, tackling or quick hands.

As a number 1 ruck? It was a risky proposition that worked out ok. Soldo was clearly the more likely one of the two of them though.

That's a reasonable point. It just seemed like muddled recruiting at the time. On one hand they must have really rated soldo given what they paid for him but on the other hand maybe they didn't rate him that much given they brought in sweet when it was obvious that both couldn't play in the same side and whoever didn't get picked would want to leave.

I am not sure anyone really rated sweet, especially not to the standard that he showed later in the year after coming in and getting some continuity going. He was an 11 game ruckman that never really had a chance to show anything in to his mid 20’s. The fact that soldo got injured and he was required to come in for more than half a season showed that it was a good move in terms of list management.

In terms of soldo’s trade value the only reason I could see him being worth much less than what we traded him for is he is 1 year older. Other than that he played the same amount of games as he did the year before for Richmond and improved in almost every stat category. Aside from injury he would have been our number 1 ruck all year. St kilda aren’t trying to trade for a player that will be a back up in the 2’s all year, they are wanting to play him in tandem with Marshall.

He will never be a No1 ruck he should have realized that and stayed at the Tigers where he would have got plenty of games still as the No2. I wonder if the Tigers and Soldo would be interested in him coming back to Tigerland?
We don't have any Ruck backup and Port might take a 4th Round pick for him.

I reckon Port swap their for the Saints picks + Soldo.
That is, Solda, Picks 36 & 54 swap for the Saints 24 & 43

I agree sweet was pretty untried so it was hard to rate him I just feel Port would have been better off getting one not both then waiting 12months to see if they needed another ruck.

On soldo and I'm not being critical of you or him as I like him and would have him at Geelong. But he had an injury last year like he's had most years and st kinda are going to rightly argue that for a player nearing 30 and with his injury history, that he's not worth a r2. Hence I think Port are either going to have to cop a loss on the trade or keep him in the 2s as backup. St kinda will just go and find a cheaper ruck to pair with Marshall if the price isn't right.

That values Soldo around pick 40ish. Which is probably about right.

Not sure too many saints fans would like that deal though.

Yep. They are absolutely within their rights to do that too.

Ports biggest weakness is our lack of depth. Trading out depth players that are good enough to come in and fill a role for throwaway picks that will get us kids that are not ready to play would be foolish.

Which is great, but if the bloke doesn’t want to stay in Adelaide you are always up against it unfortunately.

Players seem to have all the power these days.

And i think we will trade him, because we are pragmatic like that and it’s what we do, same as Houston. Just needs to be reasonable value for us. But if we didn’t what is he going to do, retire? Or suck it up? He has 2 years left on his contract.

Probably just sulk for the year and get traded next year.

Or join Emirates as a hostie.

Surely not.

24 looks like a very good pick in this draft. I'm not sure they'd be happy to trade that far down for a back up ruck.

A future third sounds about right. I know apart gave up a bit for him, but they also ended up with a decent ruck for next to nothing.

I think it will either be a cheap trade or he stays at Port.
