Fine, I'm still in the group that need convincing that's he's going to fully deliver at AFL level, and certainly at the lofty levels some have him reaching.
I've seen enough of him as a 17yo kid to know he'll get there

So buckle up and enjoy.

Don't pot a 20 year old kid till he's had a fair go at it.

Any news on MacPherson. I haven't heard too much of him since NY when it was suggested he could play a bit in the preseason

Think I remember reports of him having Osteitis Pubis, which has kept him out of action for all of the pre-season games to date.

Honestly, it doesn't matter that much.

For the role that we want him to play, defense is very much the bonus, not the make or break thing. Much like Smith, the defensive structures is there to cover whatever weakness there is defensively.

As said previously, if we are serious about doing well this season, Milera needs games at HBF at the top level immediately as getting him acclimatized to the role at the highest level is one of the key things we need to do to be successful this season. Playing him in SANFL is only serving to waste valuable time seeing his offensive game is already sufficient which is the key condition of this role.

I think half of Mileras problem is playing to or within the structure. Smith is no Luke Brown, but he knows where to position himself.

I think Milera is a very skilful kid but I’ve seen him often work out of position to the point where he looks as though he is intentionally moving away from the action or out a zone he had covered. Henderson had a similar issue.
I think I’d prefer he learn not to go missing in such a way further up field before throwing him back.

Could be wrong, he may kill it facing the play. He has always looked comfortable playing deep forward to me.

It could be argued that our wingmen have as much defensive responsibility as our half back flankers. Wayne struggled to move to the correct spots when he played on the wing and we prefer to use more mature players in this role. IMHO he is much better suited to a hbf at this stage in his career.

He initially looked off the pace against West Adelaide but came good after half time. I suspect that he won’t be ready until Round 3 or 4. He did look very good when his confidence improved.

I will be very surprised if Seedsman replaces Brodie Smith. He has played more than 95% of his playing time for the Crows on the wing. He played on the wing all last year. He has played all the pre-season on the wing. Either we are planning a big surprise against Essendon or THE MAESTRO thinks he is a wingman.

As mentioned earlier, Seed not even mentioned in the conversation about HBF by Hart yesterday.

Have to say it doesn't suit him on the rare occasions he's drifted back. Similarly looks really shit when he's drifted forward. Natural wingman is the correct call.

Player ratings

Adelaide Crows top 10 - JLT Player ratings Points per 100 minutes of game time, minimum 30 minutes played

1. Murphy
2. Sloane
3. CEY
4. Gibbs
5. O’Brien
6. Atkins
7. Laird
8. Lynch
9. Fogarty
10. Doedee

Anyone know how AFL player ratings are calculated?

Interesting that Matt Crouch who had 36 and 27 disposals does not make our top 10.

Meanwhile Lachie Murphy with 11 and 12 disposals is our top rated player.

One factor behind those numbers would be the actual TOG. Matt played around an average of 80% TOG for both JLT games. Where as Murphy I think was closer to around 55% TOG average. So the numbers might be a little distorted, given Murphy was only on for small bursts. Isn't the deciding factor, but would be one reason.

Gibbs averaged around 70% game time I think, so extrapolated out, that ranking is quite good. It's only JLT but I think Gibbs is in for a monster season. Will be interesting to see if he's good enough/damaging enough that clubs shift the tag to him over Sloane at stages during the year.

Yes true. Had Murphy and Crouch played the same number of minutes, one assumes their number of disposals would be closer together. I doubt that explains the whole difference, or even the majority of the difference.

Every time a player is involved in a passage of play he has the chance to accrue points. But rather than his score being a simple tally of his possessions, marks, tackles, hit-outs, free-kicks and scores, his performance is measured using a system called Equity Ratings. The system determines where and how a player influences a contest and whether the player's effort then results in a positive result for his team. Equity Ratings includes what coaches love to describe as "pressure acts". As a result, players are rewarded for interrupting opposition passages of play as well as setting up scores for their own team.

Players who consistently produce positive contributions are rewarded more highly than players with a high volume of stats. As an example, a 20-disposal game by Cyril Rioli, where 17 disposals are positive and only one is negative, can have the same impact as a 40-disposal game by Dane Swan, where 25 are positive and nine are negative.
I imagine because Murphy is closer to goals and more involved in scoring and had a few pressure acts (and goals himself) as well as fewer turnovers meant he wars rated the same. The last paragraph is an accurate description of the reason probably.

Mackay is equally sub-par on a wing, at half back, played ahead if the ball and even when (giggle, giggle) deployed to the stoppage. You can't argue that we don't get an even output from him across those many roles.
Imo, Mackay is worse off a HBF than a wing.

We got another reminder last weekend...

No.

Gibbs is here to improve the class of our midfield.

I doubt Pyke thinks differently. Much easier to score from the bounce than from defense.

CEY competes with Greenwood for that 5th mid spot.

HBF will need to be Douglas, Seedsman or Milera.

Not for us. From the bounce is generally pressured disposal and having to beat an opponent one on one or create a crumb. We're shit at that. We excel at the fast break kicking to a forward in space and under little pressure.

It's the bit about getting the ball in his hand that needs plenty of work.
Agreed, worth persisting with though. It's where Andrew McLeod cut his teeth and made a name for himself in the early years. Granted he was actually a very good defender in those early years, where as when he went back there later in his career he transformed that role into the modern half back role we see today.

I have a sneaky suspicion that Hart sees McLeod like potential in Milera at HB.

Looking forward to seeing what Junior brings to the table in the Smith role, I prefer him over D-Mac in that role & I believe it’ll the making of him. Could even rotate him with Gibbs for a short burst in the midfield.
On another note, it’d be great for Doedee and Fog to play R1 one as that’s our club backing in the talent we’ve drafted.
Apparently Hunter was a stand out in the SANFL trial vs Westies, preferred over ROB atm?

That's why we got Gibbs...
