I think you're getting a little over excited, not that I can blame you.

From a neutral point of view, I'm excited for prelim finals every year. The bigger the crowd the better, but if it was up to me I'd take an even crowd split any day. For me there's nothing better than the energy that's created by two opposing sets of fans displaying their passion. I want this even when Collingwood are playing.

It's what makes footy in Melbourne unique in pretty much the whole of world sport. I can't think of any other league or sport that would so regularly get large crowds from each team in attendance.

I agree to a point but we get those even crowd splits all the time so it's unique to the rest of the world but not to us. It's good to have some variety and the yellow and black cauldron is something I'm really looking forward to on Saturday.

Australia v New Zealand in World Cup final would have been more one sided than this in terms of crowd support. That was a quick kill when Starc knocked over their real weapon after a few balls.

Probably around 20,000 on weekend will be people just going to see the preliminary final as footy fans from AFL and MCC combined. Maybe more.
That still leaves room for about 70,000 Tiger fans I would think and 3,000 GWS types.

Still very one sided though.
Not as much as State of Origin game in 1989 when Vics killing SA but still getting up there.

Think there will be up to 85,000 tiger supporters this week. Possibly more. Maybe 10,000 neutrals. More than half of those will cheer us on too. 90-95,000 in yellow and black and about 5,000 supporting gws

So as I understand all tickets bar 13000 MCC walk-ups have been sold (and possibly some returned allocations). Does this mean the absolute minimum crowd would be 87K?
Yes and no. Obviously it will be higher than 87K but not every bought ticket will end up being used. For example, I assume you could have said the same thing about the QF which ended up having a 95K attendance. The MCC that night was standing room only about 20 mins before the first bounce. There is obviously not a standing room capacity of 5K in the MCC, not even close to it, so presumably there were at least several thousand tickets not used for various reasons. (Prepared to be proven wrong on any of this, just off the top of my head.)

that world cup final fell quite below capacity: 93013. I think Saturdays game may draw more of a crowd.

My understanding there is up to 10.000 but only 5000 is used by order of the MCC
"The MCG has a total capacity of 100,024 (consisting of 95,000 seats and approximately 5000 standing room spaces)".
Lets look at those recent figures for GFs if there are only 95,000 seats and at least 1 or 2 thousand seat ticket holders dont turn up for many reasons - sickness, death etc then 7000 + standing room have to be sold to get a crowd of over 100,000.
Lets face it you could easily get 10 - 20,000 around the concourse behind the seating in the two main stands.

When the MCG had many crowds in the past of over 100,000 before the total revamp there would have to have been tens of thousands of standing tickets sold.
Ive been at the top of the old Southern Stand with crowds of 80- 90K when people were 5 deep at the top in the aisles.

My point was the MCC is a quarter of the ground -- for the reserve to have 5K standing room the entire ground would need approx 20K. That's simply not happening with the way the new stands are structured. When the ground is short of 100K despite being a sell out sometimes it is because the MCC reserve isn't at capacity, but more often that not it's because of no shows from purchased tickets.

But I generally agree with what you're saying. Clearly 100K is the limit that has been imposed for safety reasons and more could be fitted in if they wanted to. I've long believed that on grand final say the MCC tries to make up whatever shortfall in tickets not being used in the rest of the ground, ie they try to have the MCC over capacity by exactly what they need to reach 100K. It would be interesting to see what attendance they'd need to get to close the reserve to walk ups which hasn't happened on the big day since 2000. I reckon the crowd would end up being a few hundred over, I doubt they'd shut the gates as soon as person 100,024 walks in. But we might need Melbourne to make the grand final for that to happen so we could be waiting a while.

That's crazy stuff. I wonder if we'll ever see a scenario like this again.

Let's assume the G are right and we see 95,000.

Will we see that again? I doubt we ever will for a visit of either West Sydney or Gold Coast.

Frankly no one believed we would ever see 95K in Melbourne against either of those two essentially unsupported outfits. Richmond's finals games in recent years ( Carlton, Norf, Cats and now GWS ) have just taken on a life of their own riding the wave of the pent up desire of the Tiger Army to see the club win again. Hard to see that being replicated.

Its not that a couple of other clubs don't have the fanbase, its more that here we have a club with a vast long hidden and crucially matchgoing support just begging for success and validation. It was obvious from before the bounce V Geelong that if the Prelim was Richmond against the Womens Jam making Institute it would sell out.

Pretty sure you just made that made up! But yeah I had that same feeling. One thing is for sure no one else will top this crowd. They may replicate but we couldn't have possibly drawn any better for this game.

NRL selling tickets for $15 for the Sydney game. I dont think they will be bragging how they beat the AFL this weekend.
AFL sold out with the cheapest ticket $65.00 another massive revenue raiser for the AFL
Top price $184.00 at the MCG and $161.00 at AO

There simply is no contest between the AFL and NRL.

The NRL are right to give away tickets cheaply if they think that can take the empty look away from the stadium and the truth is they simply do not have the support not to have to indulge is stunts like that.

While some troglodytes in the darker ends of LU may not realise that you can bet the NRL itself and the bosses at the Sydney clubs realise it all too well.

Well head over there and attempt to convince the tin foil hat mob:D
