I am pretty happy with my two selections. Scheer and and Clarke are apparently two of the best inside/contested players in this years draft, and both are high production big bodied mids who can push forward. Hopefully these traits translate well primarily to Handball and Tackle categories, as this is my primary weakness.

However both also slid in the AFL draft into the 60's, so they both come with weaknesses that will need to be worked on for them to pay off. They are both highly rated though, so I am hoping for the best.

Dont get the logic in allocating best next in the real draft yet allowing a timer to end at 4am?

The timer is arbitrary. If it ends at 4am then it means he's had since 4pm to consider options and draft someone. He might have had rankings and those players were drafted or (when the timer runs out) we might find he has rankings setup. I don't think any of us have setup a ranking and left it to immediately auto draft yet? And the fastest selection I've seen this draft was threenewpadlocks last pick when he took Bolton.

I think in this case and the next person there is a difference between someone whose pick starts at 8am. Just saying if we are modifying times out picks wouldnt it make sense to stop the clock between midnight and 6am at least lol.

No, not really. The 12 hours is there so if your pick falls during a work shift or something else that you've got time either side. It's not supposed to be 12 hours of research time now that it's your pick :D I've taken a few hours on each pick because I've been doing a school run or to sanity check my pick. And I've spent time negotiating a trade too but you're not limited to trading your pick during that window, you can do it well in advance if you want. What I'm getting at is there's no competitive advantage to taking your full 12 hours to make your pick versus someone else that takes 12 minutes. You've either done the research or you haven't.

I think unknowncaller said, the 12 hours is so that if u is close to your pick you can check at night and in the morning 9 and 9 and not time out, that's plenty of opportunity during draft time.

Sorry for the delay lads. Last I checked a few hours ago there were still 4 picks so it must have been my pick almost immediately after that.

In fact, given I last checked it at about 4pm (when I headed home from uni to cricket training), the picks (automatically) would have been made in a matter of minutes ...

No rush. Got plenty of time :)

I disagree with that. People can take as much time as they like with their picks IMO. Sure they can be encouraged to take who they like with that time, but I think there's a timer for a reason and if you need to use the whole 12 hours, then so be it.

It's not like we're pushing it for time anyway. There's 3 and a half weeks until the season starts, and we have more than half our draft completed anyway. Worst case scenario if everyone took 12 hours, then we'd be done in just over a fortnight.

I agree with that. Hence saying there are times coaches are disadvantaged. If someone uses most of their time and makes a selection a 7pm it means the next guy realistically doesnt have the same time as 8 of his 12 hours is sleep

Who needs sleep anyway?

Happy with Witherden, easily best in my big board albeit he hasn't been spotted training yet or something...:
Very nice get. I was hoping he or Ben Long may continue to slide to my next pick as I was looking at them with my last pick, however it looks like neither did.

Got him!

pick 35 - Ben Long

I originally had Cameron at 24 and Long at 30 so to get back in the draft for both while stocking up next year is a big bonus.

On the Saints board we have spoken about Longy and his spot in the team at length. He has shown at VFL level that he can play both ends of the ground well but we think he will be a forward for the most part over the next few years.

Alan Richardson famously announced in an interview with SEN last year that he had told our recruiting team to "find me a Cyril Rioli" and while we fans thought this meant Shai Bolton was a lock, the club shocked us all by grabbing Long.

Word from out of the club is that he has been smashing it with his aggression at training and isa very real chance to play ganes early in the season as a dedicated crumber at the feet of McCartin, Membrey and Bruce.

Very happy with this draft after a quiet off season.

Ive lost Membrey and a couple of picks but I got a couple of handy backmen in Mullett and Saad, my 2018 draft is looking stacked, Ive tied a couple of rucks from the same team in and Ive replaced one Saints goal kicker with (potentially) another.

Im hopeful of some slight imporvement with the likes of Hooker, Howlett and Melksham back. Vickery at the Hawks could be anything and natural experience will hopefully see a few more of my guys lift their averages.

In 12 months time though... Phwaor... 8 picks in the first 3 rounds! Thats 8 of the top 42 with two 1st, four 2nd and two 3rd rounders.

Plenty of trading options there!

You're misunderstanding me. I have no issue with anyone taking the full 12 hours or with anyone using it to research players or with how long the draft is taking. It's not what the 12 hours is intended for though and I just think claiming that you only got 4 hours to research players instead of 12 so someone else had a competitive advantage is a bit rich. What's to stop you researching in any 12 hour period prior to your pick? I had a list of 30 players ranked before the draft had started. I shuffle it based on what I see of preseason games or training reports. I could've taken about a minute per pick and I'm confident that no one taking their full allotment is getting some sort of competitive advantage.

Is still in the rehab group due to the leg break (broke his leg in 4 places, I think). I'd say that's the only reason he slid in our draft. If I'd kept pick 35 and he was available it'd have been between Witherden and two others. If the Lions manage his injury properly and get his body right then he'll be a great pick here, basically Trent McKenzie without the attitude problem (watch McKenzie this season now that he's dropped the attitude so you can see what you've got on your hands in a couple seasons ;) )

Everyone drafts differently though. There's no pre-requisite I've seen anywhere that states we have to research before our picks.

Not at all but it kind of assumed and probably helps!
