On anecdotal evidence? any breakdown on numbers of paid up AFL club members who live in Tassie....not just Hawthorn and North members....just gives idea of potential base for a Tassie AFL team if it ever happens....
2018 could see six teams over 70k. Crows, WC, Pies, Bombers, Tiges and Hawks. Who will be first to 80k? (Certainly won't be us). That is a huge amount for the Crows and yes it will be interesting to see how much the two West Aussie teams improve once the start playing out of the brilliant new stadium next year.It wouldnt surprise that the WC tops the 70,000 mark as well with Fremantle not far behind.
I think a lot of supporters buy memberships to feel that they are part of the club and dont go to every match and I feel this trend will continueYou'd think Hawthorn would be pushing uphill to get 70,000 next year unless there's a big FA signing in the off-season.
Thanks Walshawk.....so that is approx 30,000 people currently living in Tassie who are basically paid up (admittedly probably only for 3 or 4 match membership or "non-match attending" membership) members of AFL clubs. Given Tassie does not truly have it's own club those numbers are significant. You would think the majority of these people would fully support a Tassie club as paid up members and then there would be significant numbers over and above this who would join up. My point is that really there is already a basis for a paid up lobby group of potential Tassie AFL members to promote the formation of a club in Tassie. On anecdotal evidence
Hawks 10K
Roos 7K
saints 1700
Assume Pies/Dons/Blues/Tigers similar
Other Vic clubs, Syd/Bris 1k
Other interstate 1K total
That makes around 30k.

Foxtel 360s show was last night reporting the Giants had passed the 20,000 mark which in itself is a great milestone for the club.A GF ticket would be one of the reasons you would think. They are 2 massive ifs.
I tend to agree more with the latter than the former.

scoreboard @ MCG yesterday thanked Hawthorn'a 73,502 members.
Do you want to make it a rule that you can't be a member unless you can go to every game? Come on.The Hawks & Magpies both have 70k + members and the game only attracts 50k ish !!
AFL membership nos are almost meaningless !!
Do you want to make it a rule that you can't be a member unless you can go to every game? Come on.
Both clubs have around 60 members in Victoria. Assume half of them can go to a given game (like me can get to about every second game) and the crowd was closer to 60k which all adds up.
My local RSL club has 2000 members. Yet last Saturday night there were only a few hundred people there. They must be cooking the books.
European & American football clubs play in front of fully sold out grounds with waiting list.
Probably only West Coast , Adelaide & the Cats playing out of a smaller venue can claim that !!

You clearly do not understand the value a large membership has to a club. It is not just the direct revenue. It is a database for sponsors. It is very meaningful for the clubs, if not for you.European & American football clubs play in front of fully sold out grounds with waiting list.

4 in CaliforniaEssendon on occasions at Etihad!
The NFL is different, America has a population of 300 plus million & one to two teams max per state and doesn't broadcast games lives against the gate in the state the game is being played at
As oppose to the afl 24 million and 18 teams 9 in Victoria alone! If there was less teams and a smaller venue than the mcg many of the large Victorian teams would play to packed venues
4 in California
3 in Florida
California is listed to have population of39 million & Florida around 20 million4 in California

That makes me wonderCalifornia is listed to have population of39 million & Florida around 20 million
That makes me wonder
What's the population of New Jersey (2) and Ohio (2)
I think the only other state with multiples is Texas, but they're huge. Bigger than cal I believe
Ps. I just read the rest. (I just got eager to prove you wrong)
You're not entirely correct in regards to broadcasting live against the gate.
It's blacked out if it's not a sell out.
Teams like Oakland and Jacksonville have put tarps over their upper tiers over the years to reduce capacity so they can actually classify games as sell outs to get games on tv.
Though. That may have changed in the last tv deal. I remember there were some changes. Not sure what exactly but idk.
New Jersey ~ 9 million
Ohio ~ 11.5 million
I think the point is to talk about fully sold out stadiums and membership waiting lists needs reference to both the number of teams relative to population and stadium size.
Collingwood and Hawthorn are two of 9.5 clubs in a city of 4.5 million playing out of a 100K stadium. Not surprisingly, its membership structure differs from overseas franchises where there are 1 or 2 clubs in similar population catchments or even the WA clubs, of which there are 2 in city of 2million playing out of a 40k stadium.
Hawthorn has several thousand Tassie members, each club has other 3 game type categories. Collingwood has Legends memberships (~$900) that barely go. They both get more money from the memberships than other australian sporting clubs have total revenues. To say they are meaningless is ridiculous
Couple of your points are valid but
- How do you know $900 members do not attend games ?? That said someone paying $900 a season is a member.
I more question the 3 game $100 members . There are games with allegedly 140k members that struggle to draw 50k. But since posting the replies have confirmed its more about a registered supporter base that can be sold to sponsors !!
