With their bye, a 2 week suspension becomes three weeks without playing, essentially 5 full weeks between games when you allow for the week either side.

It's a long lay-off. Reckon they take the 1 week.
Good point you make about the bye. But as far as I'm concerned, **** the AFL. Cotchin actually punched the guy in the chin, hand connected to jumper or not, and got no penalty. Hawkins basically grazed the chin, if that... it's a farce. (Stupid of Hawkins though, under the circumstances).

I know the AFL made some noises in the media regarding jumper punches, but did they issue any memo's or directives to the clubs saying jumper punches would now be treated as actual punches?

If they didn't I'd challenge, if they did I wouldn't.

FMD, opened this expecting to see one of our players making history by being suspended while we had the bye.

Reckon they wear it. Listening to Hawkins on the radio, he simply doesn't get it.

If ever the AFL were going to get the chance to get the message through loud and clear, this is the perfect opportunity. They are not letting him off.
He tried to say he got him in the chest...the pics and videos say otherwise. Just move on I reckon.

Of course Cotchin should have got suspended, but like so much that happens in the AFL these days, things are seen differently from week to week.

One thing that really disappoints me is that the AFL Operations Manager has the right to challenge MRP findings, yet over & over again successive Operations Managers have wimped it when there have been unfathomable decisions made by the MRP.

Hawkins cannot consider himself unlucky. Those who have done similar things prior to this latest AFL crackdown can consider themselves very bloody lucky.

I feel for Hawkins in that he was in a wrestle with the Crouch brothers immediately beforehand and this was a continuation. The retaliator cops the penalty yet again.

It's more about how he retaliated, rather than the fact that he retaliated. I didn't see the scuffle, but presumably the Crouch brothers didn't throw any jumper punches during it?

2 piled on him on the ground though. Things are bound to be heated when he regained his feet. Point is it wasn't just a bit of push and shove and an overreaction.

I just think Cotchin and others should consider themselves lucky. There's just no room for it in the game anymore and the AFL has been edging that way. With all the recent talk about it, Hawkins and Geelong can't claim that they were blindsided.
They might not be rocket surgeons, but AFL players aren't dumb when it comes to this kind of thing either. They all try to go as high as they possibly can while thinking they can get away with it. They try to hit as hard as they can without trying to make it look like a punch. If you want to punch on, take up ice hockey or boxing. We've moved past the days of amateur footballers and on-field thuggery. It's time to stop making excuses for violence.

(just a general observation, not a direct go at your post)

I agree with you. Rub out the thuggery. However they should be diffusing the wrestling before it gets to that stage as well.

There's not a lot they can do though, other than getting the play moving and hope they stop, or giving out a free. I like a bit of push and shove going on. Surely you can have a bit of a push around without resorting to punching a bloke?

Wasn't pushing around. It was a two on one wrestle on the ground with the play having moved on. I know if you get smothered or headlocked on the ground, it tends to cause a bit of panic.

Didnt even warrant a free kick let alone a suspension. If anything fine him a grand and move on.
Harder hits in netball.

Seriously? Thank goodness this attitude is now becoming the exception rather than the rule.

Hawkins' little effort was as dumb as some of Jarrad Waite's efforts over the years. He got his right whack & now owes his teammates & the club's supporters an apology for his stupidity.

So Hawkins comes in and pulls one or both players off Selwood and pushes them around a bit. When/how does punching come into it?

Agree the inconsistency and volatility in interpretation and application of AFL rules is plauging our game. The 15 meters & 50 meter penalty can vary for umpire to umpire within the same match. They must come with different measures evey match. Its difficulg to keep a straight face.
We need full time professional umpires that adjudicate a little better. Our game is no longer a provisional , parochial suburban battle . There are big bucks involved with international potential, AFL has to clean ip its act.
