It's all about team success for Lion Lewy

Lewy Taylor at the Lions' training camp in Launceston

AFTER the most difficult season of his short career, Brisbane Lion Lewy Taylor has simplified his goals for next year.

By the lofty standards he set in his first two years, the 2014 NAB Rising Star winner played poorly last season.

He was dropped at one stage and generally struggled to find anything approaching his best form.

While all this was going on, Taylor was at the centre of a prolonged contract negotiation that played itself out very publicly.

After months of back and forth, the clever midfielder/small forward put pen to paper and signed on for a further three years.

Taylor now has his sights set on a return to his best.

"It was a challenge at times," Taylor told AFL.com.au of his 2016 season.

"A lot of stuff got blown up there. I sat there and let my manager do the work he's supposed to do. I didn't get involved.

"It's part of the job and it's great to get it done and get three more years.

"I can move forward and try and get a few more wins on the board and help the club go forward."

Taylor has played 63 games in his first three years, and although still just 21 (he'll be 22 when the season starts), is already talking like a more experienced player.

"To tell you the truth, it's just about wins for me," he said.

"It's all about winning games now.

"I don't really care about individual success any more, it's about doing things for the team and trying to win.

"If we can have a few more wins than last year it'd be a good result."

Not only personally was it a tough year, but with just three wins (he was a part of two) and coach Justin Leppitsch continually under pressure, Taylor said it was a difficult year for the entire club.

"The losses aren't great, but you've got to push through," he said.

"Hopefully this year we can turn it around for ourselves and our fans."

No substance in that piece. I'm interested to know how Lewy will progress in 2017. He's sort of the poster boy for poor development at the club IMO - not sure if that's the club's fault, his or both but he just hasn't progressed after winning the rising star. His stated idol is Boomer Harvey but so far he hasn't shown the kicking skills or had the scoreboard impact of Boomer and hasn't shown any defensive skills up forward that the club really needs. Last year I felt in a couple of small things that Leppa said that he'd either sort of given up on him or that he was giving him way too much leeway for his faults and expected a few more years of further development and minor-improvement when really a player like him should be developing more quickly and starting to come into his own.
I've met Lewy several times and really like him and think he's a great clubman and potentially very good player. I'd really like to see him have a very good year in 2017.

Quigleys analysis in his draft year and the concerns he had on him seem to be spot on.

I wouldn't put it down to poor development, the deficiencies in his game have always been there.

Let's hope he puts it all together.

i agree that all those you have listed are under the most pressure. putting my neck out i would say that Jared Jansen and Josh Clayton will not get new contracts, Harwood at his best is a first 22 player for mine, C.Beams needs an injury free year, i like what Robertson and Close could bring to our team although they need to show it on a consistent basis to earn a new contract.

Robertson will be offered a contract. Players that bleed and put in genuine effort will be rewarded.

It's culture-building.

I wouldn't be so sure, three years in the system without really cementing himself as either best 22 or best 22 on potential.

Needs a big year imo

Tbh a lot of Hawks supporters didn't rate Kennedy before he was traded to the Swans. Inside mids with elite running ability need more time. Unless he has an absolute stinker of a year I'd be happy for him to sign on for another 2.

Is Robertson an inside mid?

When he was in the side for a few weeks before getting injured, he was getting the ball out really well time after time. When he got injured during the game we were losing the inside ball a fair bit.

He averaged 0.5 clearances and 3.5 contested possessions a game this year.

I'm not saying he won't develop but he's been played as an outside mid for the last year or 2.

You have just answered your own statement.

He averaged low clearance numbers because of we he has been playing. I think it was last year (2015) when he played in the middle and stupidly they tried to turn him into a tagger. I seem him as an inside mid imo, strong and won't back down and will get to all the contests. Dunno where Fagan sees him

Or maybe we played him as an outside mid because the people who are paid to run our football club see that as his best position?

I not sure that's a reason to be given a contract, honestly think he works hard but I just haven't seen enough to show he will be a league footballer. He might get another 2 years but that would only be because of the position the club is in. He'd have been delisted at most other clubs

Maybe but as l said previously, that would account for the low clearance numbers.
New football club regime and it will be interesting where they play him, l reckon they will give him a different position imo,

Yes, I didn't have the energy to find it, but I recall that Quigley's view was that he was a player with a tendency to sell his teammates into trouble, and make poor decisions. I remain hopeful that that can be overcome, and certainly in so far as it hasn't yet been ironed out it is a developmental issue, but I am loathe to be too hard on any player who has come in in the last three or four years, I'm not sure that ours has been an environment in which players have had the opportunity/ resources (physical and educational)/ or motivation to develop.

A little snippet from the what teams did well last season on Afl.com.au.
A good one for the lions.

The Brisbane Lions

The Lions endured a 2016 season both the club and its fans would rather forget, but one thing they did well, given the opportunity, was score. Although being in the bottom four for total number of inside 50s, the Lions' forwards made the most of their chances, scoring almost every second time they went in there – good enough for second in the league. Similarly, when they won centre clearances, the Lions were excellent in transitioning the ball direct to a score – more than one in every four times, which ranked them first in the AFL. - Michael Whiting

Sack Hudson. Bad forward coach.

Wow. Some positive press from the media concerning our stats for once. I'm shocked....bewildered...confused....perplexed....astonished!!

Well a lot easier to maintain a good record with a smaller number of entries. No doubt as we start to have more inside 50s our Conversion percentage will drop. I'm one who still thinks our forward set up needs some work especially in ability to keep the ball locked in our forward half for long periods of time. We have got to be one of the worst teams in the comp for opposition rebounds from their d50 that result in a score...

But at least we are doing something right and hopefully we can add a few more strings to our bow in the coming years. No doubt Fagan wouldn't want to tinker too much with what's working considering he has said himself that he will build on what works and try to remedy on what doesn't.
