First Impressions: How your clubs new boys are faring.
On afl.com.au

The Brisbane Lions.

As they'd done the previous three years, the Lions reshaped their list in the off-season with a big focus on the draft. Hugh McCluggage was touted as a possible No.1 pick and it's easy to see why. The rangy midfielder has looked right at home at his new club, with composure and good skills under pressure a highlight of the Lions' match simulation sessions to date. His good mate Jarrod Berry has also looked good, and although the inside midfielder has plenty of competition in that part of the ground, he has done everything asked of him at this stage. Cedric Cox is as gifted as any player on the list – some at the club say they still don't know whether he's right or left-footed – but might need a little more strength to play seniors. Of the rookies, mature midfielders Jake Barrett (GWS) and Blake Grewar (Redland) look more than capable of playing at the top level.

The standout: Hard to go past McCluggage. It's only match simulation, but the teenager already looks to have more time and space than most of his teammates. - Michael Whiting

I hope Cedric gets a run earlyish.
There's a little snippet in the Jansen video on the Lions website where CC grabs the ball, slices untouched between a couple of chasers, pivots 180 on his heel and almost walks a couple of steps before kicking.

Looks like the sort of guy who just doesn't get tackled often.

He hardly got tackle in the AFL too...But he hardly got the ball, so maybe that was the reason :D

So from the vision it looks like Dawson is playing in defence and Mayes up front. I would have liked Liam up front but it will be interesting to see how he goes. There has been a bit of positiveness about him over the offseason and I like his body shape. His running looks to have improved quite a bit and I think he could give it a real crack this year. Lots of competition for those medium defender positions though.

That competition can only be a good thing.

Does anyone else think the McLuggage is a doppelgänger for Doc Clarke when he first arrived at the Lions?

Just a thought I had after looking at a game from the past over the weekend.

I wouldn't read too much into that - in these sorts of drills people are sometimes just shoved into a 'defender' or 'forward' role for the exercise.

Agree on Dawson generally - reckon he's got something.
