Training 2017 Preseason

Rocky has definitely been a bit quieter on the track this off season than last, read into that what you will. he is as fit as i have seen him though, can't even be a hint of a suggestion that he is not in good shape, he obviously has a desire to perform to the best of his ability this season, whether that is to secure his long term future in lions colours or to attract suitors is anybodies guess.

i'm tipping and would like to see Dayne Beams as the captain with Allen Christensen a smokie at very long odds, has been outstanding on the track vocally and physically.

I think Bundy is a certainty to join the leadership group but doubt he'll be the skipper.

Agree Jason ,Beames has put his hand up and no one comes near him as a player,if hes reliably fit its clear cut to me.Very interested in your observations ln Christensen, I always thought him courageous and talented ,its fantastic to hear so many positive remarks on his leading from the front. He's obviously fit this year.I could see Robinson being well in the mix,the players seem to love him,and he interviews really well, thoughtful and positive.

I think it will be Beams,D as C and Zork,D as VC
No inside there guys, just my take on the Lions media release stuff, comments from the Club from last season and the whole new overall leadership drive for this coming year. The above two could be a role reversal but I reckon that will be about it.
Leadership group may be:
Dan Rich
Bundy
and one of Steph/Tom Rockliffe
Possibly Harris Andrews

I wonder if McStay could be a smokey as part of the leadership group? Interviews extremely from what I've seen and gets around not only the players and the fans as well. I have had a few small chats with him and he seems switched on. Probably the only thing holding him back is that he doesn't exactly scream leader from what I've seen of him during the games and he should probably focus on his game a lot this season as it is a make or break year for him. Nice bloke.

Hey guys,

Firstly, sorry I haven't been down to training for a while, or been contributing at all, I have been a bit busy with work/life commitments and I lost a little desire to participate while the team was being smashed routinely.

I went down to training this morning and boy was it hot. I can understand why the boys only did an hour session due to the heat.

They started off with kicking on what I believe was their opposite foot which was good to see but hard to watch. Some of the boys were pretty good at it, but a lot of the younger guys weren't. They are all very vocal, but Lester, Bewick and Matho were worth noting.

Went on to a longer kick down the line which they would move the ball diagonally in board as quickly as possible. They would then follow up and either shepard or receive a handball and move it on. They continued this for a while, Cox kicks the ball very low and direct, he was a bit short on some of his kicks but they were still straight.

Then they broke up into 2 groups and then 2 smaller groups.

One drill was to have a circle around a player and then keep the ball off him with a handballs and if he got it the person who made the error was then in the middle. The other was similar, but they had a square and two players in bibs who would try and tackle the other players without leaving the square. Everyone was pretty good, vocal and overall pretty positive. Cutts is still training like he was last year in that hes quick to point out errors and get angry if it isn't done correctly.

They then moved on to some stoppage work in the forward 50, with one end receiving the ball from a tap and the other receiving the ball along the ground. They were under some pressure from the coaches who had pads and they had to work it forward and shoot for goal. One end mostly missed and the other end couldn't. Some disappointing shots from straight infront. But the work before that was really good.

They then set up into different positional groups (Close was with the forwards) and tried to move it from the back while under pressure from coaches. Mayes is still with the backs, as was CBeams and NRobbo, but he may have been pushing back to create an option.

Overall it was a very quick session due to the heat. Fair few players in the rehab group and fair few new faces I'm still trying to recognise.

Any questions just ask.

Go Lions!

Yeah cool story.

Rockliff if by far one of the leaders at the club. If everyone has a clean slate.

If you genuinely think that Rockliff is "as good a chance as any" for the captaincy you just don't have your finger on the pulse. It's not going to happen.

Rocky is playing for his free agency offer in season 2017. He ain't leading an Easter Bonnet Parade let alone a football club.

Would that mean it's safe to assume at this point it's unlikely that Rocky is a Lion in 2018 TBD? Or am I just jumping the gun on this one.. Obviously a lot can happen in a season

I wouldn't stay if I was him, and I wouldn't be worried to see him go if I was the club. Seems to me to be all about both parties maximising their respective compensation at this point.

I would be very happy to see Beams as captain...but even happier, as I've stated before, Zorko is my first choice.......something else that has been niggling at me, probably unnecessarily, is that Zorks has been with us from day dot of his career at AFL level, so no divided loyalties to any other club...Total clubman, grateful for the chance we gave him etc...

...just keep thinking that DBeams has only been with us a short few years, hardly played any games (not his fault I know) and will still have a huge regard for the Pies (understandably) but....

...would Zorks feel slighted if DBeams is made C?

Dayne Beams is a Lion through and through now. Loves the club. Chris Judd had no trouble leading the Blues from day dot. DBeams has had 2 years under his sleeve to form an attachment to the club.

As for Zorko, I doubt he would feel slighted, particularly if he was made Vice-Captain. I think most on here acknowledge that DBeams and Zorko are the two likely candidates and they are our two best players as well. I doubt either of them would feel any animosity if the other was voted in as skipper.

Yep. Sorry i dont have the inside connections some do and make my statement from the outside looking in.

TBD trying to rev up the I hate rocky train again. Man it would be nice if we could all just move on and support the club and players this season regardless of whether they stay or leave are captain or not captain.

This tedious he said she said I know you don't know crap is so tiresome. No one has any idea who will be captain until the club announces it. Doesn't matter who it is they'll get my full support and well wishes.

Good to hear the boys are nice and loud, one thing I noticed last year was a lack of voice compared to the training session I saw of Geelong in the same year.

I agree that we need to move on but so does the club, it is the right time for change and it is the best time for the club as a whole to move in a new direction, as part of that, it is the right time for a new captain. As with most, I believe Beams or Zorko are to 2 best options but I think Rocky will still be in the leadership group.
My only concern is that Beams can stay on the park, if made captain.

I always enjoy you trying to rev up angst by accusing others of causing angst. I wasn't even the first person in this latest discussion to say it wouldn't be Rockliff but here you are again exposing personal grudges again.

The discussion was about who will be captain, not "which players are you supporting or not". If Rockliff is on the field in a Lions guersney he has my support, so shelve the strawman.

If you can't follow a simple forum conversation and just want to shout one way pronouncements unchecked, get a blog.

Maybe, just an an experiment, you could try a post without prefixing it with some variation of "here's what I think sucks about Bigfooty today" and then bemoaning the fact that no one wants to play with you.

You've misinterpreted this.

I suspect this is the reason the club have been witholding a decision over the whole preseason. His durability is the only chink in his armour at present.

Whilst also giving others the opportunity to stake their claim. And the new coaching group to get to know everyone.
