Lyon is going to have his work cut out deciding who makes the cut round 1. I see no room for the likes of Suban, Ballantyne while Dawson and Dan Pearce wouldn't make my 22 and even Spurr and Ibbo are borderline but Ross has long history of keeping faith with players he likes so it won't surprise me to see any or all of them given first crack at it and the imports made to earn their place. Hamling I would think would start. I've kept an eye on him since draft year as he was one I would like us to have taken. He and MJ alongside A Pearce would make for a superb line of defenders.
The likes of Hughes, Uber and Nyhuis would be miles back in the queue now and there will be a huge battle on with Crozier and Ibbbo and Sutty to get a start.
I would love to see Yarran hold a spot, would be sensational alongside McCarthy, Bennell and Walters. Also hope to see Balic get an early start, he looks special.

I reckon Yarran will cement his spot ES.We saw what he was able to achieve in one quarter against GWS,then 5 goals in the WAFL GF.

Yarran+Bennell+Walters = deadly

When these 3 catch fire at once, now that is going to be entertaining!

Why no uber, is he retired?

At this point, here is my starting 22:

b: Hamling, Dawson, APearce
hb: HillBy, Johno, Hillsy
c: Neale, Mundy, Balic
hf: Bennell, Yarran, Walters
ff: Apeness, McCarthy, Kerston
R: Sandilands, Fyfe, Blakely

Bench from: Spurr, Ballas, Weller, Griffin, Crozier, Sheridan, Collins, Tabs

I have become increasingly satisfied that our defence is looking good, midfield looking excellent, however the forward line still presents problems for me. Our newly acquired forwards as well as tabs, apeness and yarran are not really made for CHF or overly mobile - they are predominantly leadup forwards with little experience. I do wonder who will hold down the CHF spot? I think Fyfe is best used around the ground.

So who is our best natural CHF?

Kersten.

McCarthy by a long shot, totally agree with the lack of experience but I like the versatility of the forwardline in years to come. Interesting that a lot of us are not putting Ballas or Tabs in the team indicating that our forwardline options are significantly better. Work in progress this year but will be much better by the time we make it to the new stadium.

Why ?
Good speed, good mark and long range accurate kick.
I know a member of Geelong executive team and he said the Cats rate him as probably their best kick.
How come he struggles to crack the 22 then on a regular basis. I think we are overestimating Kersten on here a bit - probably doing the same with Hamling. Sorry to be such a spoil sport.

Spurr AP MJ
Weller Collins Crozier
SHill Mundy Bennell
Walters Tabs Langdon
Ballas McCarthy Yarran
Sandi Fyfe Neale
Tucker Blakely Apeness BHill

I can’t see how Hamling fits into things next year. I’d play Collins over him because of his intercept marking and AP is better at full back. If MJ isn’t fit then Hamling comes in.

Kersten is behind Yarran and McCarthy atm.

I’d like Balic and our 7th pick to force their way into this line up.

And even though I didn’t pick Sheridan and DP I bet they’ll be lining up round 1.

I dont know why he wasnt getting a game or whether they offered him a contract.
I do know we have repeatedly told him if he wanted to come home we will take him.
Most likely Geelong have other targets and it suited them and Shane to move on.

He played 17 of 23 games this year. Wouldn't exactly say he struggled, they just went with a different forward structure over the finals and he got chopped.

Geelong have one of the better midfields at winning the hard ball and hacking it to half forward without any direction. That doesn't bode well for a forward, not because he isn't handy for a team but because they need a contested marking beast to make keep the pressure off their ball burning midfielders.

They see the mountain of inside fifties and think the forwards were the problem.

Fit team (not round 1 team)

FB: Spurr, Hamling, Johnson
HB: Crozier, A Pearce, Sheridan
C: B Hill, Neale, S Hill
HF: Bennell, Taberner, Walters
FF: Ballantyne, Kersten, McCarthy
RUCK: Sandilands, Mundy, Fyfe
INT from: Clarke, Blakely, Weller, Langdon, Apeness, D Pearce, Tucker, Sutcliffe, Yarran

My thoughts, mix of experience and youth

Spurr Collins Hamling
Ibbotson Pearce Mundy
Weller S Hill B Hill
Bennell McCarthy Walters
Yarran Kersten Apeness
Sandi Fyfe Neale

INT Crozier Sheridan Blakely Tabaner?

If Johnson fit maybe replaces Collins or Ibbotson? Unsure

Spurr Silvagni Johnson
Ibbo Hamling S. Hill
Langdon Neale b. Hill
Yarran McCarthy Bennell
Walters Kersten Apeness
Sandi Fyfe Mundy

I/C A. Pearce Weller Ballas Blakely

Reasoning;
Silvagni better than Dawson
A. Pearce can play both ends of ground
Ibbo can play tall or short
Langdon and B Hill on wings for their outside run
Apeness showed good form in WAFL finals, will get bigger and more confident and not shorter.
Unlucky - Crozier, Sheridan, Taberner

Is how I hope to see the team round 1, assuming everyone is fit. Probably missing a rotating ruck so Clarke or Griffin would sneak in somewhere.

It will be interesting to see how Ballantyne reacts to not getting traded because no-one really wanted him bad enough to give us a decent pick. Hopefully it is a wakeup call..........You aren't as good as you think you are. Get out there and play like 2013 or GTFO.

Ross Lyon is going to have real depth for the first time in ages.Best preseason gets you first opportunity.
