Banfield is the one we should have taken instead of Gorter

As exciting as he is I have doubts Ryan will make it as an AFL player
Agree that we should have taken Bailey Banfield instead of Gorter.

Given neither Alex Waterman or Cavka made it, I thought we could of done with a blue collar inside mid. As I recall discussing prior on the board, I see length at the HBF and Gorter is not going to give us anything new or AFL standard.

Bit early to say however Banfield is one I am definitely keeping a close eye on.
For what its worth I think we messed up badly by not taking him as a Rookie last draft.
I cant help but think that the Gorter selection was to please East Perth. I dont believe that anyone else would have taken him and WC could have tracked his development at EP for another year.

I will need to watch more Colts and the Under 18's as I generally form my views after a body of work about mid June early July.
That said I am not expecting a big draft cohort from WA this year as we are pretty thin on talent.

That will be compensated by a deep draft contribution from both Vic Metro and Country as there is plenty of talent in this years TAC comp.
I plan watch several of the Under 18's games live again this year and some of the guys I coached with whilst I was in Victoria are still active on and at TAC Clubs , their input is also worth picking over.
Barney44 seems to have a different view regarding that.

I missed his comments what was his take on it ???
Someone suggested that the Gorter selection was to appease EP but he but he said that it wasn't and something along the lines of losing one of their best trainers and etc. He said more but i have a memory of a gold fish. Best is to ask him.

He said - East Perth got nothing out of it so I doubt it. They didn't get a transfer fee, they lost one of their best trainers.

We then that make it even for both Clubs as West Coast aren't going to get anything out of it either.

I also smell BS as if WC and EP could bypass the AFL's strict and rigid transfer fee protocol.

Part of the alignment rules, they do not get a transfer fee if West Coast rookie list a player from East Perth until he is upgraded to the main list. Peel and Fremantle have the same rule in place.

So East Perth received no transfer fee for Gorter or Bayok.

Absolutely agree with the comments regarding the confusing decision of opting to pick up an undersized whatever he's supposed to be in Gorter as opposed to another developing big bodied mid and dangerous small forward in Banfield and Ryan, two lads who are performing well in the wafl. In hindsight, we potentially could have had both had we not taken Gorter and kept Tunners on the RL (which has now proved to be a huge mistake on the list managements part). I feel like Ryan was a necessary risk for the club. We haven't had any good small crumbling forwards with X factor in a very long time. Rioli and Ryan, given it worked out the way we all would want it to, would have been a very dangerous pairing with X factor, flair, creativity and pace. I'd still like to see us pick up Ryan in the RD though if he's still there. 24.8 in 6 rounds is a bloody good effort. Unless they're joe the goose type goals?

Maybe we can pick up Bolton at the trade this year if he's home sick. Which I've heard is the case.

Focusing on this years draft, we must bring in a quality KPF (as we all know). While continuing to build up our midfield and hopefully add another small forward (as mentioned above). Anyone know which KPFs to keep an eye on this year? (From any state)

It will be interesting to see where our first pick lands. There are some high quality talls that are currently ranked top five. That could easily change but as it currently stands we may not be as spoilt for choice with regard to a KPF as first thought.

I would say that just going by the phantom drafts there should be some pretty good options at our first and second picks for kpfs. Traditionally tho a kpf has to be a first rounder to become an a grader.there are exceptions tho.
I would like to see us pick up a kpf with our first then another 1 later in the draft to develop.
We still need more midfielder and small forwards too

I wouldn't be surprised if we have a draft similar to 2006, where we picked 4 guys around the 195cm mark.

Delist:
Karpany - a waste of a second round pick. Should be playing better in the WAFL than he is and is into his 4th year on the list. Bust.
Brophy - will arguably never be good enough for AFL but a good WAFL player.
Gorter - a HBF who probably shouldnt have been picked in the first place.
McInness - retained as insurance because of our ruck situation, played a good game against Perth, but is otherwise not good enough to command a sixth(!) year on the list. Another second round pick bust.
Tunbridge - injury prone and coming off an ACL, we need to cut our losses and let him go.

Undecided:
Lamb - have we developed him poorly? Is he a big bodied mid or a wing? One more year in the guts and see what he can do?
Jetta - chronic under performer. Have we been playing him in the wrong position or is he just a generally lazy footballer who we could do without?
Snadden - is beginning to play reasonably well at EP, worth another year?
Allen - deserves another year, but thats dependent on whether or not he's playing WAFL seniors regularly for the rest of the year and kicks more than his 2016 total of 10 goals.

Possible Trade Bait?:
It was Emac in 2016, but he's worth nothing now.

Retire:

Butler? - 32 next year but is very good at half back and is experiencing his longest fit period in his career.
Priddis? - elite contested but is slowing down and retaining him risks stunting the development of our younger mids. Arguably cannot play any other position which hinders our flexibility. Will also be 33 next year, although durability not a concern.
Mitchell? - gun, but will be 35. Say hello to our new midfield coach.
Petrie? - handy, but 36 next year. Coaching our reserves in 2018 I reckon.

Promote:
Watson - has shown potential to be a HBF with x-factor for us, could debut later this year.

There is a lot of potential for serious turnover this year. 5 delistees, 4 possible retirements and other players who could be moved on. Safe to say our second rounders are still a weakness for us when it comes to drafting. Thoughts?

After watching our performance vs the Hawks tonight I feel like we should face facts and realise that serious list turnover is a non-negotiable.
Happens like this every year. In reality, a couple will retire. McInnes and maybe Tunbridge will go and we will continue on our merry way with the same list. We need a big shake up. Tell a few of the guys (jetta hill) it's their last season if they don't get a move on. We can't be having guys on the list for 6 years who have done sfa. List turnover needs to be a bit better than that..

If jetta does nothing just accept we made a mistake and cut him. Hes past the "potential" bracket And needs to start producing something. Same with masten, at his age he should be impacting games more than he does now. Our club is to nice when it comes to these decisions, even comes through in Match day lineups (after the loss to the Hawks we make just ONE unforced change, that's ridiculous, make the guys want to be out there by giving them accountability), no one is prepared to make the hard calls

Made 9 changes to the list last season which is a 20% turnover in a side that won 16 games

Last year was an exception but it doesn't happen often enough. Rookie list players given 1-2 years then try again. Our management is obsessed with "types" of players. Keeping McInnes as cover is a joke, we don't need cover for the cover. If he's not good enough, pay him out and move on. No use him wasting a year on the list when we could be trying out a new rookie. I might be being to harsh on the talent of the list but at least turn over the match day squads a bit more. Players are complacent and no one is pushing them to succeed.

They just turn up every week, cruise through the game, talk to the media about our effort not being good enough, change nothing, do it all again next week

I think an even better message would be trading Nic.

Sweet so the plan is:

Step 1: trade out A graders for whatever we can get

Step 2:trade in a list full of C graders

Step 3: get Ross Lyon as coach

Step 4: play C graders for next 5 years and compile draft picks by finishing last

Step 5: dart eyes repeatedly and collect the profits
