Review 2017 trade period

Pretty happy with how we went overall.

I think our expectations with regard to picks in this draft are bound to be skewed by just how poor it seems to be considered by recruiters. Even so I think we achieved better than par with Cameron (that prelim made a world of difference), Lever and Wigg.

Would not have minded the likes of Dan Robinson, Paul Puopolo and Aaron Francis who were also mooted, but I think we need cash in the cap to pay Sloane next year, particularly with the Jenkins and Mackay albatrosses around our neck.

Gibson will be a godsend if we sustain multiple injuries through midfield, even if he is something of a ball butcher. Otherwise I think he'll provide able leadership in our SANFL side.

Confident a number of our 2015-6 draftees and Harry Dear will take a big step forward in 2018, slight shame about Troy Menzel though.

Sloane gets a much needed chop out with Gibbs now in the middle

Add another year's development to the Crouch boys...

Gallucci covers Cameron

Doedee / Keath cover Lever

Hampton to cover Smith

will be there abouts - optimistic about 2018 - Way more than I was 12 months about '17
These are my thoughts too. would Gibson take Mackays spot?
is he quick i have not much idea on him. Basically free though.

Given they don’t really play midfield and we added Gibbs, that’s not right. Unless we play Brad of the half backline and sloane on the half forwardline.
Our side is worse off with Smith and CC out and just Gibbs in. People thinking Gibbs is going to be the missing piece of the Premiership puzzle are in for a shock.

Losing Smith and CC means out midfield is weaker next year.

How, Smith is a running defender, CC is a defending forward who has the occasional run in middle.
We bring in a an A grade mid in Gibbs and an average mid in Gibson.
CC along with Lever would be two of the easiest players to replace in the side and Improve on.
Smith different but we have several players that will only be under his output. With Gains made in the Middle, we can cover his lost for a year.
Then we have Smith returns late in 2018 and Playing in 2019.

On first look at the Gibbs deal, I was disappointed. But depending on who goes for pick 10 and 11, we basically get a 29 year old Gibbs for Cameron (who wanted to leave). Since we got really good overs for Cameron, it kind of evens out the really bad overs we paid for Gibbs with pick 10.

I am actually quite happy with a separate trade of pick 16 2017 and a late 2nd 2018, in hopefully a weak draft with an early 2nd and early 3rd round picks in 2018 in a really good year for SA talent. If history repeats these potential top 10 SA kids will probably slide to these picks. I am happy we traded out of the 2017 draft. If its true that this is a weak draft, then we have played this quite well. Hopefully, we can find a gem at 12.

Considering Lever wanted to go, I think we have to call that trade a win too.

Gibson - dont expect to see him in the 22, but he is potentially good cover for Smith's cover and will hopefully cost us a pittance in salary. Is this guy a defender? I cant seem to work out what he is, I always think of him as a defender. Anyways.

I’m happy with it, although wouldn’t have minded another in.

Will be extremely pleasing and funny if we land Fogarty with Port’s old pick 12.

Pick 12 went Port—>Bris—>Adel.
If we land Fogarty it's A+ and we nearly have 3 firsts in 18' if Carlton stink it up.
We will most likely trade futures next year and bundle to improve into the top 5 imo.

We have done very well balancing overpaying and getting way overs and looking to secure SA guns next year!

we
So to actually summarise in a way I can understand it:

IN:
  • Gibbs
  • Gibson
  • 2017 picks: 12, 39, 77
  • 2018 picks: 10, 21, 39, 64
OUT:
  • Lever
  • Cameron
  • Wiggums
  • 2017 picks: 16, 36 73
  • 2018 picks: 70
I think that's right.

So 2017 picks didn't change too much. Hell, we improved the 1st round.

Big news is lever + cameron out, Gibbs in and we're now heavily into the 2018 draft.

All in all - that's a very good trade period.
gave away pick 10 too :)

No Gibbs is not the missing piece, But when you add him to improvements with Brad Crouch, who will take the tag easing the burdon on Slaone, ie Brad Crouch is a bigger body and better suited to handling a tag. he also a line breaker and more dangerous than Sloane.
Them we have a speedy Mid Forward in Gallucci along with Milera who has a few game under the belt, Also expect more consistency from Atkins, Doedee was one of the best intercepting defenders in the SANFL last year and he is quicker and a better one on one to Lever, that will allow us to play a smaller defensive line with far more speed, add a Hampton or Milera,
Then in the Forward Line all we have Lost is CC, But again he can be replaced, We now have with Gibbs the ability of rest Sloane up forward plus running some of the younger players getting games into them.

What you have forgotten is because we have added Gibbs we know have the Luxury of Playing 2 new players in a settled team with support on all lines.

gain: Bryce Gibbs, Sam Gibson, 2017 draft: Port Adelaide 1st round pick, Carlton 5th round pick 2018 draft: Melbourne 1st round pick, Carlton 2nd round pick, Carlton 3rd round pick, Gold Coast 3rd round pick, Melbourne 4th round pick

Lose: Jake Lever, Harrison Wigg, Charlie Cameron, 2017 draft: 1st round pick, 2nd round pick, 3rd round pick, 4th round pick, 5th round pick 2018 draft: 2nd round pick, 3rd round pick, 4th round pick

So we've effectively traded out of the 2017 draft besides what we get for Charlie.

While improving position in next years draft picking up another 1st and 3rd rounder, an upgrade in the 2nd round and probably an upgrade in the 4th round.

Did we win or did we lose?

We won by a country mile. Port were like me in high school, shot too early. The crows were patient and calculating. Looking fwd 2 next year! Gibson a handy pickup as well, cant believe Norf dumped him.

Think you are missing several of the picks we traded out in 2018 and at least one from the Wigg deal.

How can you be sure Brouch doesn’t crumble again?
How can you expect Doedee to come in without a single AFL game and replace a AA squad player?

Quite frankly how can you expect for us to get much more upside. Most players had career best years. Gallucci won’t play more than 10 games.
Hampton is made of glass
Seedsman can’t tie Smiths boots
M Crouch will get more attention
Milera hasn’t improved since his first game in 2016.

Can you explain to me what our strategy is? Are we going for a premiership next year or not? Cause I can’t figure it out

I think we did well overall in the end. Mitigated the loss of Lever and Cameron, and bought in nice picks for next year.
We go into the draft with 12, 39, 77, and 109. Hopefully this translates to Foggarty, Edwards, Greenwood, and Keath.
Wonder if there's any chance we don't upgrade Hugh & Alex ... quoting myself

Not sure what the rookie list conditions after the CBA are and it would make a mockery of the rookie list but what if we left Greenwood & Keath on the rookie list instead of upgrading them - still give them pay they would now command, and play them as if they were on the main list?

This would allow Crows to get more list spots to draft/trade in more players and is taking advantage of the process of having upgraded a player to cover for long term injury and then returning the upgraded player to rookie list on return of injured player.

So the "cheat" is parking HG & AK back on the rookie list and getting to play them anyway. We certainly wouldn't be able to delist them and pick them up as rookies.

Imagine the outcry if we can get away with this one time (before the put rules in to stop it).

Today We have a fit list Barr Smith.
Brad Crouch will not crumble. His ankle is fixed.
Matt Crouch role is hard to tag, pure inside mids fight for the first touch a tagger does not affect that much. Also more attention on him means less on Sloane. Brad and Gibbs
I expect Doedee to come in a Play a role, As for replacing an AA squad, I expect Talia to have an AA season. along with improvement from Hartigan.
Gallucci will play more than 10, easy and he is a better prospect than CC.
Seedsman plays wing and is a better kick than Smith also he will also go along way to cover Smiths meters gained, from the Wing.
Smiths Direct replacement comes from Hampton, Milera, MacKay, Pohokle, Gibson, then there is Cheney and CEY.
But guess what we get Smith back late in the year and for 2019.
