2018 Best 22

Fox showed superstar: Tom Mitchell and showed the Adelaide (oval) game where it showed the importance of Birchall before he reiinjured. Really hope we get him back permanently in the best 22

Our best game for the year I think.

Funny but they also showed r17 v Geelong which was strange. I. Thought it was meant to be Mitchell:superstar not chamberlain:superstar
Agree. Birch incredibly important for the way the backline structures up. Gotta hope he plays for a few more seasons.

Explosive speed out of a stoppage, the ability to win his own contested ball and evasive skills that make him hard to tackle.

He's not quick over 100 metres but over 20 I'd say he's arguably the quickest on our list. I don't think he'll get ahead of Howe but he does provide attributes our side was lacking.

Geez you are going to get a few excited with that wrap. From what I have seen I am not quite as bullish.

What about his decision making? Not convinced yet and don't reckon he runs to the best spots for the team.

Puopolo and Burgoyne :'( might be the next retirees. come 2018 'super draft' some of the second groups might be looking nervous

It’s 3 things:

1. Do the guys who missed chunks come back strong particularly O’meara, Birchall, Frawley, Rioli

2. Can we build midfield strength quickly to match the current over abundance of strength at either end

3 What have we lost with Hodge

His decision making is let down by his disposal. Often has the right idea, some really creative stuff, but an errant kick or handball lets him down. This was extremely prominent in the three games he played this year, but I think being unable to actually practice skills for 6 months may have attributed to it. But it was also a problem in his first year too.

What does Lovell bring in your opinion?

Exactly what Vando said, he's also an endurance animal and can get to contest after contest. His ball winning ability is also very Tom Mitchell-esque, and he loves a tackle.

He's just a strong bodied kid with the ability to get out of a contest and distribute the ball. The only knocks I have on him as a player is that he doesn't have much of an off-foot and his disposal could be a fair bit cleaner.

Beat me to it! It is an issue, especially considering he's not particularly dual sided so he has to get a lot better at his dominant side but he has all the tools. A return to skills after spending the majority of 2017 running 2ks could help.

I don't think Birch can man a KPP but that aside, it showed me that our list is a bit stronger than I thought. Look at those players not making the side.

I based it on another posters list. Needless to say you would swap around as per roles required

Pretty similar to some others here, but my round 1 team as of right now:
FB: Stratton - Frawley - Hardwick
HB: Sicily - Brand - Birchall
C: Morrison - Mitchell - Smith
R: McEvoy - O’Meara - Burgoyne
HF: Gunston - Burton - Rioli
FF: Puopolo - Roughead - Breust
I/C: Shiels - Howe - Impey - O’Brien
Whatever the team is in round 1 though, there will probably be 1-5 changes in the best 22 by the end of the season, regardless of injury. Just some players might step up and others might drop away. Our team is in no way settled atm
Interesting discussion as to where Burto plays but I put him up forward because I see more of a need for youth there right now. I think the club wants to see him up forward (and I do too lol). Honestly he could play anywhere. Got great goal sense, is athletic, a beautiful kick, and tbh I see him being a far better contested marking option in a leading role up front, as opposed to in defence. Could be wrong, but his U18 form as a bottom ager tells me we should at least try.
Most interesting position for mine is that wing position opposite Smith. Could go to a number of players but I love what I’ve seen from Morrison so far. Henderson could easily play there but I’d also really like to see a young guy step up (like Hardwick, Howe, Burton did this year). Who knows, if we draft a mature anger or delisted player they might even be a good option.

If Gunston goes back to his old role as a center half forward we will easily make the eight.

With Stratts, Frawley and Birch coming back, I wouldn't mind seeing us try a half forward line of:

Gunston - Burton - Rioli

I'm probably going to be yelled at, but I do want to put a word in for Shoey at HF. He is well respected at the club for a stat that is not often referred to, and that is bringing the ball to the ground (the stat is actually number of times out marked - he is rarely). If we are going to have a lot of small forwards, we do need to make sure that the ball is brought to ground...

Just doesn't hit the scoreboard enough for mine. 11 goals when he did not have Gunston, Rioli, Poppy, etc demanding the ball away from him for much of the year, was barely a pass mark for mine, in the 11 games he played. He also only averaged 4 marks (1 contested) and 11 touches a game. That's defensive forward type stats, except for the fact he only averaged 1 tackle per game...

Let me put it another way, I’m worried that some of these exciting and short forward lines we are proposing are going to give up a lot of marks and create rebound opportunities.

As long as Sicily stays in defence being the 2nd best intercept player in the comp I'm happy, Burton to a wing/ high half fwd and stints on the ball hopefully

Hb-Birchall Brand Sicily
