for sure, our effort was particularly poor in the second half of the season having been 8-5 at the bye. But 2 things Reid probably didn't gamble on were Melbourne dropping from prelim finalist to utter schit and carlton sacking bolton during the season when they had been steadfast in backing him in. at the halfway point of the season with bolton in charge, carlton were dead last on 1 win and we were finals bound. Melbourne stank it up big time and carlton appointed a guy that I really rate as a coach and he pulled them right on up.

All jokes aside, it’s truly bewildering how some crows fans can defend young Reid after what he’s done to your club.

Sure. Had the 2019 swap been finalised mid-year, Adelaide would have been feeling very happy.

But the more bullish assessment of the Blues position by SOS was probably better reflected in the second half of the season. Most Carlton supporters hoped we might have improved to 7/8/9 wins. At the halfway mark this seemed unattainable and Bolton lost his job. So I think we probably ended up roughly where we thought we might be (win wise) but lower on the ladder (that where we thought we might have been) given the evenness of the top half of the competition.

The assessment of the Adelaide position would have been harder given the two previous and conflicting years. Perhaps SOS simply thought the game style and age profile meant Adelaide were past their best. That might be hard for Adelaide supporters to accept - that he made a good judgement in relation to your list - but it seems he was also happy to do a similar deal with Port. So perhaps he's quite astute after all, despite the hate he gets on BF.

If anyone cared to actually look at their list closely, it was blatantly obvious that the crows would struggle this year.

Way to old to ‘bounce back’ as their fans would have everyone believe. Their best opportunity for success came and went and all it produced was a belting on the biggest stage to a team who had only just arrived.

Given that they lost Cameron, Lever, McGovern and we’re already missing Lyons from that team and replaced them with a 29 year old Gibbs, they were always going to collapse.

They lost a quarter of their 2016 team, the quarter which contained just about all their best talent about to hit their prime and replaced them with nothing of note.

so the very simple question is - why didn't carlton just keep their mature age pick and pick 13 (they would have only needed tip in a later pick to satisfy Sydney)? - the answer is that they rated McGovern at what was traded to Adelaide - this shows that the cost to get McGGovern to the club was pick 13 and a mature age pick

edit. the funniest thing here is that had Carlton just traded with Sydney and not bothered about McGovern, they could have got Stocker with the pick 13 AND kept pick 3 this year - no need to do the live trade

But then we wouldn’t have McGovern or your future third (this pick is always forgotten about, you also gave away pick 40 to Sydney, hence the deal not getting done without 3 clubs).

Pick 8, Stocker and McGovern or pick 3 and Stocker? In such a weak and even draft I’m taking the former. As would 99% of people, as would Young Reid if the Crows didn’t alienate half their side.

Well I think the attraction may well be that those 2 picks may allow them to snag two SA players rather than 1 non-SA player

We’ve been doing it for years though. We haven’t changed since the days of Neil Craig. System, continuity and experience is what matters. You don’t need talent if you nail those 3, 22 grunts that know their roles = success. You don’t coach to counteract opposition strengths, you just “play our way”. Pyke is a pure disciple of Neil. We do not give our kids a chance because we’d rather see Mackay and Douglas provide another pure 3/10 game. But, the great thing is that we knew they’d provide exactly that. Continuity is king.
