Draft Profile 2018 Mature Aged Prospects

Generally by now most state league followers have a general idea of who are some the potential draftees for this season. From the (admittedly less than I usually get) bits of VFL all these players are a chance of getting picked up:

Michael Gibbons just keeps on finding the ball. Seriously, this guy is a machine, he's averaging 29 touches this year in a low possession rate league. I really want him to get drafted because he deserves it as much as anyone in recent memory, but his size will hold him back as always.

Luke Tynan seems to have turned a corner and might well be in line for a rookie listing, again one of my favourites, but time might be running out on the 25 year old. It's almost this year or bust for the half back, as much as I wish he would get drafted.

Eli Templeton is another small midfielder, averaging 29.5 disposals this year and 12 handball receives a game, his run and carry for the borough has been extremely important for them, but his size will keep teams away unfortunately, because he's absolutely good enough to play AFL.

Over to you guys.

Paul Roos talked up Fraser Thurlow from Southport on On the Couch last night as a bash and crash ruckman (omitted the fact the reason he was watching Thurlow is because his son also plays for Southport)

Averaging 15.5 disposals 7.5 marks 1.8 tackles 26.3 hitouts 0.5 goals a game

Roos also said that he thinks Jake Spencer should still be playing AFL. Currently playing for Aspley averaging 10 disposals 1.8 marks 1.5 tackles 38.8 hitouts a game

Also in the NEAFL Matt Hammelmann kicked 9 against NT Thunder on the weekend to take his tally to 23 in 4 games

Mitch Grigg continues to dominate SANFL averaging 31 disposals 5.2 marks 7 tackles and 2 goals a game. Could add another Margarey Medal to his collection.

Grigg has all the skills to be a star of the game. He just never worked hard enough for it. easy to tear it up in the SANFL.

Haiden Schloithe in the WAFL would be a good mature ager

2nd chances can do wonders for guys like that sometimes.

You’d suspect that all clubs will be keeping a close eye on him with those numbers he’s pulling up at the minute.

Fraser Thurlow spent one year on the Essendon rookie list. Bloke was just about the worst player I've ever seen get drafted. He was useless.

Gee, good list there eth-dog ;)

Really, really like the Gibbons selection. Is such a similar player to that of Caleb Daniel. Just goes and goes and goes.

Would like to add a couple of others;

James Tsitas [Geelong] - 181cm, 85kg, 3.3.95 (23 y.o)

All round midfielder who goes from strength to strength. Won the Cats B&F in '17 and claimed team of the year honours. Will not surprise me to see him on an AFL list next year. One of the best in the VFL.

Kade Answerth [Sandringham] - 181cm, 83kg, 7.10.96 (22 y.o)

Another who has gone from strength to strength and one of my personal favorites. He is simply a good and complete footballer.

Nash Holmes [North Melbourne] - 184cm, 84kg, 13.3.97 (21 y.o)

Inside midfielder similar to Rhys Mathieson. Runs hard but needs to work on foot skills.

Could go on for a few more but these are the guys I like the look of early doors. Would like a quick mention of Sean Gregory who has been able to have a good crack and run at it and is now playing strong consistent football for Coburg.

From what I understand, Hayden has no hesitation letting people know who he's going or who he is. Doesn't lend well to being an AFL footballer

Without being disrespectful to the NEAFL guys but they (Thurlow & Spencer) would need to be seriously dominating all the stats as ruckmen to even be considered for an AFL list again. Dominating the hitouts but that would be it.

I liked Hammelmann at Brisbane. Old fashioned lead & mark forward who at 22, still has time on his side. Should get drafted again.

Mitch Grigg will never amount to anything more than a great state league player. Doesn't want to push himself anymore than he has too.

Tsitas is one I liked last year, but his size might hold him back.

Answerth's kicking was "no where near good enough still" from a recruiter last year, alas haven't seen a Sandy game yet but will watch with interest either this week or next I think

Holmes I don't think gets drafted.

Sean I love, but he's too skinny and not good enough going the other way to get re-drafted.

Ryan Lim and Ben Sokol from the WAFL. Alex Boyse and Nick Hind from VFL?
Hind and Boyse haven't had the hot start to the season they had last year. Still think Hind would add a lot of value to a team that wanted pace off half back or on a wing.

Hence why each and every one of these guys is not on an AFL list.

I still think Tsitas gets a look in. If he has another impressive year, he gets an invite to the draft combine. Ditto Eli Templeton who is what every club could use right now. Line breaking midfielder (albeit with poor skills).

You as well as anyone would understand how tough it must be to hold together the Lions defence at Piranaha park. Gregory is doing just that. At 23 or whatever he is, still has plenty of time on his side. Continually grows and develops is all you can ask for from a KPD.

Couple of kids at Frankston are worth a look but like everyone else, have weakness' which will hold them back.

Still feel Tsitas is the best option at VFL level. Bewley worth a look in. Few more will surprise over the year

Ryan Lim and Ben Sokol from the WAFL. Alex Boyse and Nick Hind from VFL?

Boyse in particular has been a victim of us not relying on a VFL KPF with us electing to play McKernan, Lleunberger &/or Draper as key forwards.

Has still played well enough to kick 6 from 4 games but not seeing him dominate this season like he did last year.

Hind has stagnated. Seems to not have that willingness to run and spread like Adam Saad which was a feature of his game last year.

Both boys will still be on the radar of clubs so one great showing and they could be back in the fold as quick as they fell off it

Tsitas is the one for me as well. Was a definite contender last year and probably will again this year.

It's super tough and jeez, I love the bloke but he either needs to put on another 5-10 kilos and be able to take genuine monsters or become better on the rebound.

Brett Bewley. Knew I forgot someone. One of my favourites.

Couple from Frankston as well big dog

Alex Harnett was stiff to be overlooked. One of the Dolphins best in the round 1 belting to us and keep an eye on both Corey Rich (versatile forward/mid) and Kyle Grey (medium defender in the mould of Cam O'Shea).

Hm. I'll keep an eye out.

Matt Hanson from Werribee has against started off in solid form, don't really know what he has to do to get a chance. Same goes with Ex freo listed player Sam Collins.

Have watched a couple of of North VFL games Michael Close deserves to be on a list, as does Nash Holmes. Holmes is a bit pull in the contest.
