We’ve got plenty of talls & plenty of players capable of running through the midfield. Perhaps the club believes the midfielders are more capable of improving than the tall forwards? Or maybe they don’t know? You can’t go wrong choosing best available. Don’t pick a player because he’s ‘safe’, pick who is seen as the best player left on our draft board be it tall, small or medium.

If Rankine is still available at our pick we simply must take him. I'm almost too scared to see him slide to 4 because we might pass on him.

He is a special talent with a huge ceiling.

Couple years ago there was a puff piece on Saints website interviewing players for shits n giggles. Q. Whose the laziest trainer something something. A. Gears by about 5x.
"Yeah ya never see him on the weights", "wouldn't know where the gym is haha"

Not that it was more than a gentle ribbing, but it was indicative. Gears is a runner and thats fine, he's got his thing and he's good at it. But he is the captain because Cho is the coach. New coach, new captain.

I think you could feed all the livestock in the drought with the staw you're clutching at there.
Richo has stated that Geary is the hardest trainer but we all know that Richo only see's the opposite of reality.

Riewoldt.. probably delusional.

http://www.espn.com.au/afl/story/_/id/18635386/nick-riewoldt-back-jarryn-geary-st-kilda-captain
"He's a great story - a former rookie who had to forge an AFL career through sheer hard work, and now he's an ultra-consistent player who executes his role day-in, day-out.
"Jarryn lives and breathes the St Kilda trademarks on and off the field

I wonder who was taking the piss. The players in that puff piece or the 3 coaches who picked Geary to play when he was available.

Hey but he's had a dream run, once you get on that Rookie list you can just kick back and have an easy career.

I can't see who though. Ross would be an option but hardly a leader type alpha. We really need to develop some leaders somehow.
It's funny that Freckle chose to appoint Gears, cull the leadership group, and not have any assistant captains. Whilst saying that we need to develop more leadership.
We could have had many other variations and permutations of leadership structure, but oh no no no no. We get the one that prevents possible candidates from developing, and sends the message that no one is good enough to be trusted with some responsibility. Well, there we go, I'm fcuking angry again... Jeez l fcuking hate freckled campaigner. He really has sucked the life out of our team the fcuking kent.:(:(:(:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:

I was just answering your post. I don't even agree with the premise of the argument tbh. Saints would have the worst skin folds in the league by appearance. You cant blame Gears for that sh1t..

Bs. Players choose the captain.

I think the players chose him. There doesn't seem an obvious leader waiting.

Paddy & Max are such vastly different talls that they would potentially compliment each other really well. Max the free wheeling, agile target and Paddy the brutish pack crasher.

I think we're at a stage where we just need to keep adding the best possible talent available... Our midfield has potential, especially if Ratten can have a positive influence on structure and game plan.

I'm certainly in hope that Port get desperate and offer 5 & 10. That would enable us to take Max and possibly one of Caldwell and RCD.
Fair point, Bruce & Membrey have to be considered too.

I think thats largely McCartins offensive potential (crash&bash) but his defensive game seems poor, which can contribute to him being out of the senior side.

Sounds like King is better there, agile.

Yeah funny that Frickle did.
Wait what???

"The process was quite extensive, but in the end unanimous from player support. His peers voted very strongly that Gears should be our captain. That ultimately was endorsed by the board," Richardson said.

Get as angry as you like silly man. Throw your emoticons all over the place.

we can speculate over our first pick but it's our second third and fourth pick that is interesting for me ... as i mentioned a few pages back i hadnt really been paying attention to colts footy here in WA so i dont have the normal opinions on players i usually have coming from WA but i did check out the colts grandfinal and there were a handful of guys from that game that i think would be around the mark for our second third and 4th pick (as the stand now)
Luke Foley
Tristan Hobley
Jack Mayo
Atem Deng
Nathan French
Jarrod Cameron
Patrick Farrant

Great we will take them all lol

Go Saints

True just added some mayo with the horrific bit. Horrific is Nathan Brown snapping his leg in half to me.

If I recall correctly Brucey “just” broke his fibula, the non weight bearing bone, so should recover very well from that.

I’ve also done the fibula and, granted I’m not playing footy, but I haven’t had a moments worry from it since it healed.

If we had pick 1 my order of preference would be.

1- walsh
2- rankine
3- m.king
4- lukious
5- rozee

I have a feeling for some reason that lukious will turn out to be a bust. I just keep having flashes of jack watts in him. He’ll probably prove me wrong and he the next superstar forward but I have some doubts.

So he broke his back and then broke his leg?

I know he recovered but it's still a pair of injuries that arent exactly a common thing to come back from.

His injuries look reasonably severe to me

sure why not
Fair enough. I can't imagine he would have even been in the picture with any clubs top 10. He did some nice things but his stats were on par with Jack Lonie who is the same age.

I'm more than happy with Clark and Coffield. I think they'll both be good players in a couple of years with less off field issues.

Pick 4 seems such a tough pick.

Likely to get a good player yes, but which type they go will be interesting.

The following pick or two will of course forever linger.

You do question the internal belief in McCartin if they go King.
I was thinking this today. As far as I’m aware we didn’t even shop McCartin Around (which shows we’re backing him in) but we were shopping Bruce around. IMO if we were to trade out a forward in Bruce then we wouldve replaced them with king, but seeing as there was no movement of talks and we missed Sheil etc we surely take a classy mid?? Someone ready to go...

You do realise he was available in the previous draft right?

And the two before that...

Because your question on top 10 picks is hilarious. Sure let's take him at his highest possible value. Gee I hope we always draft and trade like that

And btw you didn't follow up with a question... So not sure why you are banging on about me not answering your question. I answered it then follow up with a comment on your response....

Yes, but that's not the question I asked or that you answered.

Why no assistant captains? Robbo, Seb, Juicy, Jake, Newnes????? No one?
Leadership development plus from the coaches there. ,
I don't get this question. Are you saying we don't have vice captains (we do) or that none of those vice captains are obvious captaincy material?

I still think Newnes could develop into a good captain but he didn't display much leadership in 2018. I'm not one of them but many people consider Seb Ross to be the heir apparent. But I agree there is a big leadership void at St Kilda. Geary may be the players' choice and I think in a number of ways he's been the captain we needed to have, but hardly ideal.

When I read about Billy Slater coming to the club and about his emphasis on consistency of effort and adherence to standards, I wondered what the reaction would be if after spending a bit of time with the club he surmised that our current captain was in fact the most suitable for the job.

After all, Geary's effort is very consistent and he rarely dropped his standard. His is a much easier standard to maintain it must be said, depending little on technical skill such as disposal, goalkicking or marking and focusing more on involvement and opposition disruption. Far harder to maintain the standard of someone such as Paddy McCartin or Jack Billings. However, it must be said that after the coach shunted Jarryn into a less familiar position, he was still aaaaagggghh strong at the contest... He has been compared to Nick Maxwell who has been one of the people responsible for moulding Billy Slater's views on leadership.

Someone had to be the poor sap who took the captaincy after Nick Riewoldt and was destined to be dulled by the brilliance of one of the club's top 5 icons. I pushed for Geary to get the gig based on him essentially being captaincy cannon fodder. It's a bit mean, but I considered him to be more expendable than Newnes or Weller. Funny how that turned out. But now I think we are desperate for a bit of star power to be the marketable face of the team. Honest as he is, Gears is more suited to being a troop sergeant than the face of the club and he knows it. So unless one of the lads steps up, the void will continue on...

It's a different discussion to wonder why we hadn't had more elite talent coming through for Roo to pass the baton onto, just as Harvey passed to Lenny and Lenny passed to him. But the fact is that there was no new messiah and we were left with a team of disciples.

Max king isn’t a forward whi has great endurance and isn’t a forward who leads out of the forward 50 much at all. Playing him and McCartin makes our forward line very immobile unless the development team have plants to chnage his game style completely; which is then a massive risk.
