The difference might be what they know of Kelly. If Kelly's deal includes that they will let him move at seasons end then who knows. Agree - highly unlikely but just a theory. Media chatter is that Kelly is not the plane B alluded to.
more chance of me being the pope next week than kelly coming to us, if it did happen all 326 GWS members would storm spotless and raze it to the ground.

Ok I have had nearly 24 hours to digest the whole Gaff debacle and I think where there is smoke there is fire.

This same situation has played out three times now, Martin, Kelly and Gaff. Is there a soft underbelly in our list management team? Are we playing too nice and not aggressive enough when we offer a deal? I just can’t imagine a team like Hawthorn letting the Gaff situation turn into that utter shit show.

All we did with Gaff was let him spend a week in the euphoria of a flag, on the piss with his best mates and give WCE time to put together an 11th hour deal. I can’t help but feel we should have been more aggressive in asking for a response, set a time frame on getting an answer. Are we just too nice?

Now onto part two, the Kelly fiasco. From all reports he had made the decision to come across, only for Connors to sway him to stay. A decision most likely made easier by a soft stance of oh well don’t worry Josh we will put an offer in again in two years time.

It seems time after time we take the softly softly approach and leave ourselves open for the target to rethink.

This whole last two years stinks of a list management team that is not agressive enough when it comes to closing a deal. Yes they are aggressive at targeting, but it’s a waste of time and resources if you can’t close.

Just my two cents.

Think Martin and Gaff were extraordinary cases which makes it look worse than it is.

As long as we continue to trend upward on-field all this will be forgotten about.

I think people need to start getting ready to accept Kelly isn’t coming. The Giants are clearing the decks so they can make an offer to keep him.

As we have seen, it’s difficult to get a player to leave.

The club should have been more aggressive last year and told Connors to pull his head in when Kelly had all but made a decision to come last year.

His rhetoric about staying for flags is a load of crap. In the current competition nothing is guaranteed. Look at the Giants this year, while Kelly stayed loyal to chase a flag the rest of the rats are jumping ship.

As soon as we had found out Josh had mentally committed we should have been super aggressive in closing the deal.

All we have done is given GWS two years to prepare a plan to keep him.

Any statement from the club yet?
I’d like to see one but I doubt we’d get anything more than Brad’s line about it being hard to get players to leave their club, which is true. And no, Lynch leaving Gold Coast doesn’t count because he acted like he’d go anywhere. Better off seeing changes to management or at least immediate changes to their approach.

We’ve had the huge cap room for two seasons now. If we managed it well, we have front loaded many contracts, but it’s still not very healthy to go into another season with that much unused cap space. But I just can’t see what the plan B could legitimately be without having any currency at trade table.

All we really have is Preuss and our next season’s first rounder. Will be hard to land a big fish - let’s hope Joyce can somehow surprise us.

Most contracts are now in place. Does/can the club tinker with current contracts to bring payments forward to next year, leaving more available in 2020 and beyond.

We absolutely need to look into our "closing the deal" abilities

Unfortunately it’s becoming a trend.

The whole Gaff fiasco should have been put to bed a week ago.

He wasn’t even playing in the GF. He should have been told a response is expected by this timeframe. If we don’t have it, we expect you have made a decision to stay.

Letting these things drag out has been to our detriment. I agree with Dusty, it’s a bit hard to get a commitment when he was clearly still playing. But the Gaff saga was a circus that dragged on way too long and by all reports all we did was give him time to flip flop around.

With someone that is indecisive, you need to be agressive and force the issue.

All we can get is a verbal agreement until the trade period starts, leaving discussions until then is too late.

I prefer to look at it that we were seen as the best option outside of their current club. Plenty of clubs would love Dusty, Kelly or Gaff...... we beat off all other contenders just failed in the final hurdle. So one could argue we're doing a hell of a lot right, we'll land one sooner or later.

I think half the problem is that we are taking into account today's generation of soft c*ck kids, " gently gently .... here want your blanky ??? "

It's not that dire that they would discard the jewel in the crown.

You're not thinking this through.

Would we throw Brown on the table if we were in the same position?

Did nobody pay attention to GWS this year? Without Kelly they would see themselves as ZERO chance of winning in 2019. They'd bleed even more players next year if Kelly went now. They will not give him up and he knew that when he signed for 2 years.

100% spot on.

That’s why we should have demanded a response a lot earlier and announced it in the media.

**** a secret verbal response. Make it public to stop the back flipping.

Alright, have spoken to my plug again this morning albeit briefly.

In their words; "Either Gaff lied to his manager, or his manager lied to us [NMFC]".
  • A month ago, Gaff's management told NMFC to prepare accordingly because Gaff would definitely be nominating NMFC.
  • Two weeks ago (pre GF) the club sought confirmation, and again were told that Gaff was definitely nominating NMFC.
  • Last week the club touched base to confirm timelines, and were told that nothing had changed.
Then on the weekend everything changed and the club was a bit blindsided.

Unlike the Dustin Martin deal, however, the club doesn't feel that they were used maliciously just to up the offer from the player's home club. They think Gaff has, for lack of a better description, essentially succumbed to peer pressure from his team-mates in the post-premiership euphoria.

The club aren't thrilled, but don't want to come out too strong publicly and slam Gaff because that will reflect poorly on future stars they try and lure.

100% factual

Exactly what I was scared of. Boozy, emotional drinking sessions with teammates. I'd bet he will regret his decision soon. As someone who lost their father young while living interstate, one of my biggest regrets was not being able to spend more time with him.

I think the only hope here is if GWS's financial position is as dire as some rumours suggest (or worse), and Kelly is definitely leaving at year end, then maybe GWS can be encouraged to let him go now and ease their financial pressures instantly.

They will get two first rounders from us as a minimum next year. Would make no sense for them to trade him this year unless we're offering up an LDU. They still have the list to win a flag in 2019, even without Shiel and Lobb.
