AFL draft 2019: Tasmanian Mitch O’Neill hoping to follow Tarryn Thomas

Mitch O’Neill is hoping to follow in the same footsteps as his Allies teammate and first-round draft pick, Tarryn Thomas.

And as one of three bottom-agers in the 2018 All-Australian team, the midfielder is poised to do just that. O’Neill was one of six Academy products to attend a week-long club experience at Arden Street, with the Tasmanian teenagers training alongside AFL stars. It’s just another way North Melbourne is strengthening its relationship with the Apple Isle. “It’s massive learning from the older boys because they’ve got so much experience and knowledge of the game,” O’Neill told foxfooty.com.au.While there are growing concerns about the state of footy in the Apple Isle, Tasmania enjoyed a successful draft, with Thomas and Chayce Jones both selected within the top-10 picks. Fraser Turner was also drafted to Richmond.

O’Neill, who trained alongside Thomas last week, said seeing his Allies teammate in a North Melbourne jumper gave him “a lot of confidence”.

“If he can do it then hopefully I can do it, too,” he said.

Since abandoning a centralised footy academy and instead creating Vic Metro, Vic Country, WA, SA and the Allies, the AFL has more than doubled the number of boys in its programs.


Allies coach Luke Power said the creation of the five national academies had its obvious benefits. “We believe it can fast track their development, to learn off some of the coaches and players at AFL clubs, and mirror what they do,” Power said. “It gives more opportunities to more boys to develop and improve themselves on and off the field.” North Melbourne will play four matches at Blundstone Arena in Hobart in 2019, while the club’s AFLW team will play two matches in Tasmania. “They’re really invested in developing young talent,” Power said.

“It’s great they can allow the players to come in and give them an experience I’m sure they won’t forget.” And in O’Neill, a midfielder who can play inside and outside, Tasmania could produce another first-round draft pick. “Mitch is a beauty,” Power said. “His football is tracking in the right direction and we believe he’s going to be a really good player. But that’s also up to Mitch. He knows the work that’s required.”

The 16-year-old made the decision during the NBA Academy Games and Basketball Australia Prospects Camp in Canberra last week, having just returned from an excellent performance at the FIBA under-17 World Cup.
Jackson, who is a member of the AFL Academy and starred for WA in the ruck at this year’s under-18 championships, said the decision was tough but ultimately a weight off his shoulder
