2019 ALL AUSTRALIAN TEAM

Here's a trivia question: Who are the five youngest players to have made an AA side?

It came to mind looking at McCluggage from Brisbane.

Off the top of my head, Gavin Wanganeen, Ben Hart, Mark Ricciuto, Chad Wingard, Marcus Bontempelli, Chris Judd, Ben Cousins.

Any others in the mix?

Honestly don't think McCluggage is prolific enough to make it, as a mid or forward.

Boak was in earlier this year but dropped off.

Boak will 100% be in the side. He's still averaging 30+ touches a week and he's by far the best player in a team likely to play finals.

Lol, there’s no chance he’s 100%, 50/50 at best. Cripps, bont, Fyfe, Shuey, Kelly and possibly Neale have all had better seasons. He’s in the conversation though.

Jeremy Cameron is another who made it in his second year. Remarkable.

U/21 All-Australians (ordered by youngest to eldest)

Gavin Wanganeen (born 18/06/1973) - 1992, 1993

Fraser Gehrig (born 03/03/1976) - 1997
Nick Dal Santo (born 25/02/1984) - 2005
Lance Franklin (born 30/01/1987) - 2008
Brad Ottens (born 25/01/1980) - 2001

Note that it has become a lot less common post-2000, when the game has become harder, faster, more professional, and more dictated by physical composition and endurance.

There's been a fair number of 22- and 23-year old All-Australians too. That's probably around the time (usually 4th-5th year) when players begin to really kick on and start moving towards their prime.

Ben Hart twice as a teenager. Hard to imagine that being topped.

What about Judd in 2004?

Nic Newman a sneaky chance for a half back spot? Has been a consistently high-quality performer all year.

19 games
16 games of 18+ disposals
21.63 disposals per game (27.45% contested, 3.19 kick-to-handball ratio, 73.48% kicking efficiency, 76.16% disposal efficiency, 19.46% turnover rate)
7.05 marks per game
3.21 tackles per game
6.42 rebound 50s per game
6.53 intercept possessions per game
2.63 one percenters per game
467.89 metres gained per game
97.32 Champion Data Player Ranking Score average

Very talented footballer, whose kicking is elite (when you factor in how often he kicks and the distance and directness he goes with). Why did the Swans get rid of him, again?

He would still be an U/18s player these days if he was the age he was in 1992.

Hart and Wanganeen (two AAs, a Brownlow, a SANFL and AFL premiership by age 20) are right among the best 'young' footballers of the past 25-30 years.

What about Judd in 2004?

Yeah, somehow missed him. He's another one.

Not strong enough defensively for mine (to make the AA team I mean), although that's not necessarily given much weight by the selectors.

Honestly don't think McCluggage is prolific enough to make it, as a mid or forward.

27 touches today (21 kicks) and a goal, went at 55% though. Usually runs higher on percentage, but he is very prolific.

Also, Charlie Cameron is a 100% lock easily now.

His intercept, tackle and one percenter numbers would say otherwise, when compared to other half backs and small defenders.

Averaging 22.35 disposals (38.53% contested, 1.63 kick-to-handball ratio, 66.89% efficiency), 4.25 inside 50s and 1.05 goals per game.

Obviously very good for his age, and a very good player full stop, but again, not really prolific enough as a mid or a forward, and disposal is a bit iffy too.

Problem is that the team was already made before today’s game. He’s in red hot form. Don’t understand why the selectors don’t wait to see the full season before judging the team of 40.

Its the same problem they used to have with the Norm Smith, voting for it at 3/4 time. Shouldnt be making calls at 3/4 of a season.

Yeah I agree, it’s a matter of when not if for someone like Hugh, he is young enough that missing out now isn’t a big deal and isn’t the most deserved. Could sneak top 40 but that’s it.

Andrews, Cameron, Neale all 100% locks now from us. Rich is 50/50 but 100% for the extended squad.

I remember that Wingard was the first under 20 player to make it since 94, and he was 19.

They don’t finalise the squad to after the regular season. They meet 3? Times during the year to discuss players, to try and avoid recency bias.

Having said that will look very silly if pick a stack of cats and they end up not finishing top 2

Strong case for best wingman in the league this season. Shame that “midfielder” is treated as a singular position in the All Australian team rather than thinking about type/balance of mids.
