Some revision** for me. Decided to go with one ruck instead of two. Sinclair very unlucky based on 2018 however I feel Naismith gives us a better look at the stoppages. Reid will need to give a chop out.

Moving on from McVeigh, Smith, Jack and Grundy***

B: Cunningham Melican Rampe
HB: Thurlow Aliir Lloyd
C: Jones Kennedy Florent
HF: Heeney Reid Franklin
F: Papley Menzel Ronke
FOL: Naismith Mills Parker

I/C: Hewett Blakey Clarke Hayward

E: Rowbottom* McCartin Dawson Sinclair

* I feel he will be knocking the door down pretty quickly
** reserve the right to review again closer to the season
*** time to make the transition to the new generation and faster ball transition

I think if anything Rowbottom puts pressure on Clarke. If both would be pushing for a spot in our midfield, Rowbottom actually looks quicker and more capable on the inside. I guess it would just depend on how ready he is?

I personally can’t find room for either of them in the best 22.

Clarke is more your Hannebery type gut runner I feel. Rowbottom more your inside beast. Different midfield roles probably.

Respect your thoughts re best 22, however we have to make some changes if we are to move forward. Rolling out more or less the same 22 mix isn’t likely to get us too far I don’t reckon.

They’re different types but I think there would only be room for one of them, at least immediately. So if it was a choice you’d think a contested clearance player would be favoured over a Hannebery type, based on where we struggled this year.

I also think changes need to be made, but I’m actually not sure where and with who. For example who goes out of our midfield for Clarke or Rowbottom?
Not Heeney, not Hewett, not Florent, not Cunningham, not Parker, and not Kennedy. The obvious one is Jack, but can you actually see Horse not picking our former co-captain if he’s fit?

If we have viable depth yeah I do. That’s been part of the problem, the replacements have been at best break even thus Jacks experience and leadership gets him over the line. I think that will start to change now.

I really like the idea of Kennedy, Rowbottom, Clarke and Mills all being the main guys in the centre in 2018, with Blakey and Parker sometimes going in there as well. It looks like a much more potent clearance winning midfield than we had in 2018 and I feel that is super important.

So you’re dropping Heeney, Hewett and Florent...?

Hewett is absolutely an inside mid.

Perhaps in the future. Right now he is a tagger.

Though in saying that and despite the poor numbers he was our third best centre clearance player of 2018

1. Kennedy - 2.5
2. Parker - 1.9
3. Hewett - 1.7
4. Sinclair - 1.2
5. Heeney - 1
6. Papley - 0.9
7. Towers - 0.5
7, Jack - 0.5
7. Hannebery - 0.5

For stoppage clearances it was

1. Kennedy - 3.6
2. Parker - 3.5
3. Hewett - 3.0
4. Heeney - 2.5
5. Sinclair - 1.8
6. Florent - 1.6
6. Hannebery - 1.6
8. Jack - 1.3
9. Cunningham - 1.2

I like your list Cads but I'd swap Reid for Sinkers - though on second thought, that would be round two because you can bet your life Reid will get injured!

Yeah I definitely have Reid and Sinclair fighting it out for the same spot. Reid definitely the more talented and natural in that position imo but very injury prone so still likely Sincliar plays more games than Reid next year.

Blakey should be the only draftee in talks for best 22, and even then its a stretch. Rowbottom will be behind even the likes of Dawson who is not a lock either.

Best 22 will be more or less the same as last year imo.

With all due respect I think you’re all getting ahead of yourself re our recruits. Out of them all Clarke seems to be the one who is closest to breaking into the 22, even he will struggle to get in and will most likely be an emergency come round 1. Naismith isn’t a walk in either, he’s coming of a knee farken, he won’t even start full contact training till closer to the beginning of season. So he has a long way to go, I’d say he’ll break in mid season if all goes well.

Blakey would break if he plays against men, doubt we’ll see him till 2020, and players like stoddart, mccartin and ling would be well ahead of rowbottom and Blakey in terms of development.

The only openings in the team would come off the back of McVeigh, Grundy and jack being moved on, unless someone else completely shits the bed. Even then it’s mills, pelican, Reid, Dawson and Cunningham who will be taking those spots.

I would honestly not be surprised if Menzel and thurlows careers end without ever getting a game with us.

Depth is on our side for once so I ain’t complaining.

Sorry but for the most part you are wrong. When Sydney bring in new players, they play round 1 with the exception of injury or inexperience. They have been doing this for years.

2015 - Sinclair & Talia - both play round 1
2013 - Franklin, Laidler & Derickx - Franklin & Laidler play round 1, Derickx plays round 2.
2011 - Armstrong & Walshe - Armstrong plays round 4, Walshe still learning after coming off St Kilda's rookie list.
2010 - Everitt - plays round 1
2009 - Bradshaw, Seaby, Mumford, Kennedy, McGlynn - all play round 1.
2008 - Shaw - plays round 1
2007 - Mattiner, Playfair - Mattiner plays round 1, Playfair round 7 (if memory serves me correctly he was injured?)
2006 - Everitt - plays round 1

The list goes on. Sydney bring in players for a specific roll and they play round 1 (with the exception being Walshe who had no senior experience). That's why all 3 are in my starting line up. Doesn't mean they continue to stay in the team. But that's how the coaches see new players at Sydney.

There is absolutely no way Menzel & Thurlow don't play a game for Sydney this year barring injury.

Exactly how I see it also.

More than happy to be proved wrong. The team demographic in those years was totally different. Aslong as the whole squad is fit I can’t see how anyone would be getting dropped for our recruits, and that’s already taking into consideration that Mills, pelican and Reid all go in for those who you may think will be getting dropped.

I personally would not be happy if Menzel took Ronkes or Hayward’s spot, and same with thurlow taking melicans. Or either of the above stunting the development of boys like Dawson and stoddart. The competition is healthy tho

IMO.
Blakey will play Round 1. He is a class above NEAFL already.

+ his dad is on the selection committee. :)

All these lists are far too early.

Based on previous seasons, we know that Reid still has to survive pre-season, and there are chains and drains all around the SCG ready to trip up the unwary.

They are early for sure. Anyone could emerge over the summer.

Best 22 is a different discussion to ‘likely lineup’ though.

Surely if fit Menzel is best 22 - with one of Hayward, Paps or Ronkes making way

Why? Menzel and Hayward are essentially 3rd talls and Horse likes Hayward pushing up the ground anyway. Papley and Ronke are your traditional crumbers, that Horse also likes to play up the ground...

Franklin, Reid, Papley, Hayward, Menzel, Ronke is a very potent and fairly versatile forward line with just about all of them able to push up the ground or play deep.

I can't see another forward on our list worth getting a game ahead of that core.

Unless we play 2 rucks or we want to keep persisting with Mcartin. Then one has to go.
