couple of things ... one no one is saying 2018 was a once off ... the fact is since round three the club have been very aware that things were not right .. the ying yang analogy is in the fact that when we had a stronger list that list strength carried the weakness in our coaching box 2018 when the list was not as strong and we had the slightest change to our best 22 performing at their potential the coaching box got exposed as being not strong enough ... from that point the review was put on the entire football department ... first off the rank we identified that our list was well behind where we thought it was the fact that we had injury and nothing to cover that was alarming the fact we had out of form players with nothing pushing up from below to displace them was alarming .. Trout ultimatly copped it for that rightly/wrongly thats another discussion but he was seen as the issue .
the coaching side where we were lacking yes im certain a big part of the decisions made was the contract situation of Richo thats just the way it is but that said if Clarko became available then the club would have worn that heat for it , the thing was Clarko wasnt available so the cost/improvment benifit action of removing Richo for the candidates available was seen as not worth the cost of removing him . once that was settled there was no point flogging that horse we either sacked him or threw support around him ... right or wrong we put support around him so the question put to Richo is simple what is being served up is unacceptable we admit our team we built isnt upto scratch so what does Richo need to change this unacceptable mess that is 2018 ... from the moves made im thinking Richo asked for better assistants around him, the guys we removed were not AFL quality (obvious by the fact no one grabbed them) the guys we got were ...
so while its not expected to be a magic bullet to see us suddenly be in finals contention its a move in the right direction .. the thought is if Richo cant make improvment to the team with the improvment around him in the box then the issue is clearly him..

i cannot see Roo joining the board until his kids are school aged ... at the moment with his lifestyle he has the freedom to jet off to the US when he and his family feel the need to do so this doesnt bode well for a board member to be gone for extended periods so possibly when his boys are in school and the trips to the US need to be factored around school holidays then he may choose to be a bigger part in our club... i dont for 1 second think the coach of the club has any impact at all on that decision

Thanks for that insight Trav. What concerns me is that blind freddy could see the issues with the list and the coaching/development team 3 years ago. Finnis and the previous board were obviously focussed on moving and setting up Moorabin, but they went to sleep at the wheel with regards to the clubs core business - FOOTBALL.

New recruit Dan Hannebery will ease off his training load after suffering hamstring tightness http://m.afl.com.au/news/2018-12-19/highpriced-saint-sent-for-scans-after-minor-setback

its a tough call to make though yes we could see the issues 3 years ago but the issues were somewhat covered by the fact 2016 and 2017 we played large chunks of really good footy we kinda knew our list had issues but we also kinda had faith that a few of our guys were going to make that next step up what we didnt really think was going to happen was that our injury and form would so clearly expose how bad the actual list situation was what we didnt expect was that once that tallent fell away that the coaching staffs skills would be so far lacking to not right the ship ... from that point having a year like 2018 is a blessing had we not had the injury/poor form/horror draw we possibly would have got that 7 to 10 wins and the change may not have come at all ... i think there is a school of thought that we need to cut to the bone and start again and to an extent it might be right from where we are now we can see that the entire rebuild was built on shakey foundations problem is i dont know if we can afford to scrap the past 6 years and start again .. the reality is for us to be in a flag mode again in the playing career of the likes of Jack Steven we need everything to go right we need a star or two to come through this batch of kids we have got on the list .. we have to keep going to the draft but we cant afford not to play competitive and watchable footy thats why i think we have gone and got mature age guys to keep us improving while still maintaining that competitive feel ...

What diversity of opinions on the board is a bad thing now? 80% of BF members want Cho gone and he has the lowest approval rating from supporters but board members all have to line up behind Finnis..
PIGS ARSE...

WTF are you going on about?

If you want a sensible discussion, post something intelligent.

Felt tightness, had a scan and there was no damage.
Will be fine.

Damn I was just winding up with false accusations of cocaine calcification of the hammies. I want some outrage.

correct, the club rate him. they thought the end to 2017 was just some bad football. they think 2018 was a one off. we went from this is totally unacceptable at the start of 2018. to nah everythings ok, its just unfortunate. we got injuries, then we over-reacted to the north loss. then we had to rebuild confidence. everyone is great though, they just need more support. get 2 new senior assistants, get gubby, 1 data analytics appointment, new list boss, get 3 free agents, take pick 4 to the draft and we will play finals. but he will be sacked if he doesnt make finals or get very close to it.

they didnt want to sack him because they didnt think anyone better was available and the payout was a deterrent.

like it or not that's how they viewed it.

do i agree with it. nope. its utter bullshit. they've completely misread what is happening here. some of that stuff they have implemented takes years for you to see any benefit. for example pick 4, you wont see king having an affect for atleast 2-3 years. coaches cant just flick a switch and change the game plan, that takes more than one off-season. the change in list management and the weaknesses in the list in regards to disposal takes years to come though. then we didnt get the full allotment of free agents we identified.

so why persist with richo. he's going to get sacked anyway. all you are doing is wasting more time.

so what i think is, is the reality is richo wasn't sacked because they couldn't been seen to pay him out and post a loss for 2018. it was all about the short term. if they sacked him and posted a loss, there would have been significant movement for finnis to step down. so they won't have that. instead they brought in these measures and tried to slide by getting away with an extra 12 months. we got all this stuff to fix it. we will play finals. richo is the guy. trust us!

in reality its cost us 3 years minimum! which is a long time in football. gonna be some very angry fans next season. 2018 will be a walk in the park in comparison.

i doubt ratten will be senior coach if richo is sacked. we will go unproven, yeh the thing everyone feared. might be right on harvey. if that happens, i think it will tell us everything about the quality of the board and administration we have. basically they have no idea RE: football matters.

i think when richo is removed, roo will join the board in some capacity. finnis will be marched out the door. it will suck but lethers will be CEO.

if our club truly believes that RE: ying and yang, then they're utterly deluded and can't even keep their story straight. they think one of the reasons we are shit is because the list has major deficiencies. hence why trout was moved on. so they can't sit there and go well 2016 and 2017 was good (yes they really do think 2017 was a good year) because the list was good, but 2018 was bad because the list is bad. the list is a lagging indicator, takes years for movement to occur. but they think it can go from good to bad in 12 months. wow if true.

tbh i just dont think they have a read at all on the football dept. hence why there's so many gaps and holes in their reasoning and strategy going forward. hopefully that changes with the influx of personnel, but i'm not holding my breath. the sooner a real footy boss, with more than 3-6 months experience prior to joining our club, comes in the better. until that happens we are treading water.

LMAO.

I "pulled" my hamstring at pre-season a couple of weeks ago due to a tight back and sudden increased workload. The next day it was absolutely fine. Its called not being a 19 year old and overdoing it slightly. The boys will be on xmas break at the end of this week and he will be back doing 100% the next session after. Stop worrying you clowns.

You talking to me?

You’ve nailed it pretty well here I reckon... especially with pointing out why we didn’t move him on...

It was interesting listening to experts talk about Man United and their situation yesterday. Many respected people connected to the club saying things like “we’ve had 7 years of bad decisions, who the hell is making decisions up there.”

The thing is, they are possibly the richest football club in the world and are not immune to having lean times when their back office decisions are poor. And they are facing a long road back to being the force they were because the competition is fierce and other teams have moved on.

With us, we’ve also made poor decisions for a good 7 or so years but unlike Man United we are skint and can’t pay Richo out. We have made some big decisions lately with our coaching and board but, as you rightly pointed out, it will take time for these decisions to bear fruit- and that’s on the optimistic assumption we have made the right decisions.
Spot on. Basically I think we would have gone from posting what was it a 200k profit to posting a >200k loss. That would have been a massive killer for the profile of Matt Finnis. Can't have that.

I agree with your post if we were a rich club we would have just sacked him and paid him out.

Thing is we lose more money from keeping him on. The gate will be down. Sales will be down.

All because someone has to save face.

Terrible call by the club. Another bad decision to add to the list of terrible ones. Until we start consistently making good decisions which starts with appointing the right people in the right roles we ain't going to achieve shit.

I don't see how anyone can call the decision to keep Richo on and bring in some experienced, respected people to provided him with more support a terrible decision considering we haven't got any evidence to judge the decision on.

We may start next season with the same problematic game plan and a bunch of players clearly not playing near the level they should be. In that scenario, clearly the decision to keep Richo in charge would be wrong and the support brought in isnt doing anything. But we could also see a game plan which doesnt leave the forwards with a 3 on 1, players hitting targets and sticking tackles. It's best to wait for something to judge before sticking the boots into people.

I'm recently inspired to post something intelligent, so here goes.
My opinion is really boring, but, may just be comforting to a small segment.
We've just got to wait and see.
Thats it...................
We've had good off-field changes and potentially good on field changes, but now we're in the lap of the gods and we wait for the changes to bear fruit this year and next. Richo won't get another extension and Jack Steven will be 33 when we're challenging again coz we couldn't secure free agents in the planned time frame. We're making it up on the run now, trying to fill holes. The good news is SL, IMO. I hate the white knight idea but its a common theme for club success if you look at history.
So l reckon we've had our success barometer reset this year, and can set sights on 2021 and beyond, or there abouts.
