Joyce will play. Don’t trust Clarko.

But I hope he is named :)

JS seems to be good in the short term but it means nothing with constant 30-50 scores and you can never start blokes like that on the field nor are they useful for the rookie loophole.

A few here with mixed opinions on Balta. Seems to be leading the way fantasy wise so far.
Hore been pretty quiet so far

Cousins isn't a rookie, but at a rookie price. Could he be a worthy cash cow in the mold of similarly ranged priced players like Walsh and Smith?

A few seems to be freaking out about the lack of clear cut forward rookies. Round 1 of JLT tells me defensive rookies are the thinnest group this year and some the popular options have flopped. That's why I have gone 4-2 system in defence and 3-3 in the forward pocket instead of vice versa.

Yeah I'm considering Cousins at the moment. Still think he's 20-30k too expensive at this stage though to be honest. We've still got pretty much our whole midfield to come back which means he will be getting less midfield time and he doesn't really have the ability to play forward or the half back which doesn't help. Will be keen to see how he goes in JLT2 where I assume we'll be playing a lot more of our midfield.

Defence has easily the easiest position for starting premos and midpricers though, so even if we don't have great cash cows down there, maybe bat 4-5 deep to compensate there? Lighter in midfield to get all the cows in in that position

For me there's only 3 onfield forward locks, Danger, Heeney and Setterfield, maybe Menegola if I can afford him, if Dunkley plays forward then I'm struggling there

Yeah that's a fair point, its bit of a lucky dip to who the next consistent premium forward will be outside of Danger and Heeney.

I guess there is positives and negatives to both sides of the rookie and premium dilema.

Your premo's not scoring well, lose cash, forced trade before they drop too much, but the positive is they will play and score

Rookies have a higher risk of not playing, thus you could be left with donuts. Which is worse throwing in the forced trades. On the plus side even low scoring rookies will generate something.

I think the second option worries me more for the defence because there doesn't seem to be as great a number of defensive rookies that will play heaps and generate solid cash. Quaynor and Clark only locks so far. Hore popular but underwhelmed today. Rozee barely touched it yesterday. Still got the Gold Coast boys to play later on so hopefully they put on a solid showing. Just worried if a starting defensive rookie goes down, may have no one to cover him.

Forwards do look thin at the moment because a few popular choices didn't get named this week, but I am more confident they will eventually get game time. And a couple have done really well this weekend.

Midfield we are spoilt for choice

Still early days, have JLT2 to come and the round 1 team sheets. Much can change between now and then

Agree with most of that, however having 3 bench spots in midfield for rookies too gives me confidence to fit them in in that position without much anxiety about them getting dropped

We'll get inseason downgrades too so I don't think the defence rookie dilemma will be that bad, just might not make much starting cash down there

Not taking away anything from Balta but geez he reminds me of Darling in his rookie year, 70 ave incoming.
Not many teams have the cattle to handle 3 big dangerous fwds.

70 for a fwd rookie, I’m okay with that

70 would be about right. But Balta is the type to smash out a 120 here and there and boost his price up just a bit more.

Thoughts on job security? Would be my only issue with Balta. Kid can play, but will they play him enough is the question.
Honestly have no idea, would probably be similar to Higgins last year, that if he plays well enough he'll be rewarded with time in the seniors. Will definitely get games throughout the year at the least.

A bad game or 2 and he's dropped. Its hard to imagine where he fits in with Caddy, Lynch and Riewoldt all in the side. Possibly he could play a Westhoff type role where he just fills in forward or back and is the second ruck but we'll have to wait and see

Exactly right.

Where's he play with Lynch?

3 tall forwards is a 180 degree change from what Richmond has done in the last 2 seasons to be successful with their mosquito fleet and leg speed.

People have mentioned him replacing Grigg, but Grigg was a genuine midfielder. When Balta isn't in the ruck, it will be Riewoldt, Lynch and Balta forward. Caddy plays tall also.

I can see him getting games, but he isn't going to play large blocks imo.

Balta is probably agile enough to play on a wing like Ricoh did late in his career. 194cm isn’t true ruckman height

I get he's athletic and all and that might eventually happen.

But is Hardwick really going to play Balta off of the wing this year?

I doubt it.

Seems like with all the Balta rage yesterday Ross flew under the radar.

21 touches, 76% DE, 5 clearances from 59% TOG.

Another one the keep an eye on.

Personally I think I’ll only start Balta if Lynch is also starting round 1. He could otherwise be straight out when Lynch comes back round 2.

Not to mention Caddy and Castagna should come back into contention after a couple of rounds.

He will need to show he is flexible and make himself invaluable as the second ruck

I can see it happening especially while Grigg is injured. Without balta in the side we would have to use Lynch as a 2nd ruckmen which seems kind of unlikely. Balta could rotate with Caddy/Riewoldt in the forward line and up the ground. There can be a spot for him but it depends what structure we want to use
