I guess we could possibly trade up from pick 34 to Essendon's pick 31 for Cutler, and from there to Sydney's pick 25 for Taylor. I can't see the Suns knocking back pick 25.

Of course, then we're trading Cutler, Taylor and pick 34 for Ah Chee, which seems steep. Possibly we could get something back from one of the other teams.

34 to 31 is a pretty low compensation for Cutler. I know he's in and out of the team, but we wanted to keep him, and offered him a contract, and he's reportedly agreed to come back to Brisbane if a deal can't be worked out.

Club has asked for 2nd round picks for each of Taylor and Cutler. That'd usually mean late 2nds, maybe early 3rds. So I'd say 34 to 31 is unlikely... Maybe if they threw in 57, and even then I'd think that'd be low. Given their picks, more likely it's 31, and we give back a 3rd or 4th. Or just a future pick. 34 to 31 is equivalent of pick 67 (late 4th).

Considering Dodoro's first offer for Cutler was apparently pick 65, I wouldn't be expecting anything decent from Essendon.

Surely we could have offered something with a little more value.

Our current pick 21, a pick in the 40’s and next years first round pick.

There could be very little separation between ours and Melbournes first round picks next year.

Taking 8 & 16 to the draft would have been a good draft hand, especially if we then were happy to pick up two academy kids with later selections.

I know Noble likes to keep future first round picks, as that allows us the option of trading future picks during the actual draft.

Melbourne should be able to draft two good kids at 3 and 8, prioritising there two needs for quality outside run and a small forward.

I seriously wonder about the comments made about Cutler not doing what is asked. If we are rating him so high and he is happy to stay then it doesn't add up. If we are accommodating his request but no fair offers coming then I would expect to see him stay and try to get back into the senior side.

More accurately, I think he likes to keep them in order to trade for ready-made players if the opportunity arises. We don't want to paint ourselves into a corner where we get another Neale situation except we've already offloaded our first round pick for just an ok upgrade (or possibly downgrade) the previous year.

Pretty much just out of the team now, rather than in and out.

I see Cutler and Taylor as players we're probably better off moving on at this point. If we get back next to nothing I won't mind too much.

Another way to look at it is that if we get lowballed on those trades it can at least help us to retain pick 21 and still get Ah Chee. We're definitely not getting anything as good as pick 21 for either of those players.

Given every trade period has been hectic for us for like a decade, a quiet one for once isn't the worst thing.

Tried to get a few decent gets like Elliot & Laird, no dice, that's fine. Won't happen every year.

So in that case, get a few role players in, move on a few fringe ones, job done. Pick swaps can be done draft night even.

Dodongo pretty much agrees. At least we knew about Laird and Smith earlier on. Dodongo would guess they declined us 2 weeks back. Could have been earlier

I don’t quite get why 16 & 21 for 8 wouldn’t have been a better option for North then what they did with Melbourne.

The Melbourne first-round pick next year could easily be in the top 10.

Looks like the Suns are holding firm and want pick 21 for Callum Ah Chee, I really think that he is not worth that on demonstrated form and his injury history... although David Noble has a record of just getting deals done even though some think he pays overs so IMO we will relent and hand 21 over, hopefully it turns out a bargain for us in hindsight.

Just restating the Birch in makes Chee less of a need for maybe 1-2 years. Both have injury issues, one has 4 flags.

21 for Ah chee ! Tell em they are dreaming ! Keep him sunny boys . He's not a desperate need

Noble will probably overpay again. It's one of his only weaknesses, the other being not responding to my messages.

It's only a weakness if you overrate draft picks IMO. You could argue we overpaid for Charlie but he helped us a hell of a lot more this year than Fogarty would have.

I blame the AFL, if it wasn't for the raft of over the top picks in the rescue package, the Suns would've been more inclined to accept our fair / bordering on too fair offer, rather than using this as the perfect opportunity to.

A. Get a bit of payback for the egg on their face after last years pick swap embarrassment
B. Get a bit of payback for the egg on their face after the Jared Lyons embarrassment
C. Draw a line in the sand that they're not going to let their players go on the cheap anymore to next years likely premiers.

I also don't think any of Noble's trades could really be called overpaying in hindsight. Unless there's one I'm missing, they all seem to look like great value down the track.

What have we offered for Ah Chee? Has that been reported anywhere? I’ve only seen that they want 21.
