AA quality small defender and contracted for a further two years. Yes he would be 28/29 at the start of next year but the price is still way more than a mid second rounder imo.

He is certainly a solid player, but Iā€™d disagree that he is an AA quality defender Tom. Maybe in the past, but I donā€™t think his form this year would warrant that tag. Iā€™m not disagreeing that he wouldnā€™t be a good get, but a first rounder seems a little steep imo. Luckily we have a superb recruiting team and whatever decision they come to will get my support

Having that David Noble connection helps. I don't think Smith will be a good replacement for Hodge though. Hodge is a one of a kind, that's what makes him special. I would be encouraging Hodge to play on another year, if he wants to. Imagine if Hodge was at Hawthorn still, they would've been playing finals these year.

If Hodge plays on, I'd rather back Starcevich to take that spot from him than getting Brodie Smith. I understand the notion of getting the missing pieces to push hard for premiership, but I also worry if the next string like Ely Smith, Starcevich, McFadyen and Berry will be left biding their time even longer. Will be interesting to see our coaching + recruitment teams thoughts around our list.

Yeah we have loads of talented kids in the wings. Also in a few years Rayner will be a mid field beast and make Cripps look like Tom Bell :moustache:

It's always hard to judge these things but I'd be very surprised if Ely and Tommy Berry don't turn out to be A graders.

You still keep improving your list whatever. Who knows what injuries strike , what players lose form or what sort of offers some of your A graders might get.

So you just keep strengthening your list year on year.

They are first year players and there is a good chance youā€™re preparing yourself for disappointment if you indeed expect them to both become A Graders.

What if competing with a guy like Brodie Smith brings out the best in Starc? Smith probably has a couple of years of prime left before he starts to decline, while Starc has only just turned 20 and is still developing. If Fages and friends think Starc is starting material like Answerth then by all means let's back him to supplant Hodge next season, but otherwise I'd like us to bring in another veteran to keep competition up.

Well I don't expect anything. But yes they're first year players and on what I've seen they've both got loads of improvement in them . But it could take 3 or 4 years and may not happen . Or it might happen with someone else.

Which is why I said don't rely on anything and keep improving your list whatever. So surprised yes, disappointed no.

Hodge will retire i believe, basti, eagles will be delisted. Cutler will find greener pastures. Lester as yet un-signed but could yet get a lifeline.

With that in mind, looking at our list i think the team that played geelong is our best 22 and every effort should be made to hold on too them. Give bundy one more year and move heaven n hell to sign clugg long term. With hodge retiring we have one best 22 spot available.

The rest of the squad can be split into 3 groups,
Firstly, the players that can come in for injury or push form wise and be comfortable in the firsts. Walker, taylor, matho, keays. We should hold onto these guys, reward for the years effort and we know what their best offers and can they sub into best 22 easily. We are thin in this area.

The second group are those players that have had a taste, had setbacks form and injury, that show potential but have stuff to work on. Starcevich, allison, cox, hinge, archie, skinner, n robbo. Maybe a cpl here that could be moved on but also 2 or 3 that could easily step up and be solid depth or even cement a spot in best 22. Stef signing for another gives archie another year to press. I dont think we need to chase a ruckman yet.

And the third group are the next gen untried potential. Ely smith, tom berry, joyce, mcfadyen, wooller, fularton, payne, ballenden, madden and corey lyons who could easily be in that first group with a heartbeat of opportunity. Id be happy to draft in a young ruckman this year to have him grow and develop with this group of kids.

So when it comes to trading this year we have a best 22 spot for a defender and maybe a cpl of spots to add to depth and pressure for spots. A wing/mid and a sm fwd maybe. I dont think we need a midfielder, i think we can develop and evolve from within. Rayner, corey lyons, matho, starcevich, smith, berry etc.

I think we have 6 spots to fill at the end of the year.
3 will come from the draft, a ruckman, best avail mid, and an academy lad.
Room for a best 22 trade time special from noble and the boys in the hb/sm def area. Cant wait to see what they pull off this year
Then a cpl of good depth or potential best 22 players, eg jamie elliot and hugh greenwood.

They're my trade thoughts, i dont think we need a big turnover or a big fish. Just a few wise additions.

Lester will be around in my view. But I doubt Walker and Keays will be. Sydney and Bulldogs (after a lockdown key back) will come knocking for Walker, while Suns will find Keays very attractive to their starting 22.

We'll have the same problem with Wooller, hasn't managed to debut and his family is well entrenched Geelong supporters. Will be a challenge to hang on to him as well.

Lester is the guy to come into the back line for me, hopefully he has been a sponge learning off Hodgey the last 2 years. Let's be honest as great as Hodgy is his performance is based around smarts and organisation at this point of his career.

Lester is a much better athlete so I hope he gets first crack at the back line general role, has the respect of the playing group which will go a long way.

I wouldn't call Walker a lock down key back

He plays Harris's role without the flair of zoning off. Will be a solid KPD full back for dogs. We will potentially see Paine getting that fill in role if Walker goes.

Lester is a tough one, i think it depends on what happens on the trade table. Delisted then re-rookied if needed. I also dont think walker or keays would want to go anywhere. They must realize that they are only a few injuries away from getting a good run and chance to cement a spot. I could be wrong, there maybe rumors i havent heard. I can see keays at his age chasing more game time, but hasnt he professed a want to stay. Neither would be chasing success, that will be here for a good while now. Id like to keep both.
When is wooler ooc, outside a family connection with geelong would there be any real interest from there or elsewhere for him. I hope he stays and gets a shot to prove himself.

Should we be looking at Dale Thomas if Hodge was to retire?, looked like he still had something to offer the few times I've watch Carlton this year.

Pass for me mate. Donā€™t think heā€™d be in our best 22 and at times hasnā€™t displayed the behaviour of a leader this year.

If we are looking for an outside wing type, would Isaac Smith be an option for a couple of years? I see they raised his name on radio this morning and he has a few suitors apparently. Heā€™s 31 before the start of the year next season, but he started footy late and if we think we are in our window for the next few years he could potentially play a role?

Just keep adding as much quality as we can. Donā€™t over think too much about where theyā€™ll fit in and who they might hold back ect. Injuries are inevitable plus having fierce competition for spots will drive us towards top 4. I can see Brandon Starcevich, Ely Smith, Cedric Cox and Jack Payne all pushing hard for senior selection next year.
