He did what he had to do to win elections. But for Iraq, he'd be looked at as a success. I don't think Labour need to go full New Labour again, but they probably need to take a step or two towards it. Also, they need a leader with charisma like Blair had, which Corbyn certainly didn't have.

blair was pre the rise of the snp. Labour may be structurally second now

Miliband tacked centre but was still depicted as an extremist. Australian Labor is staying the course as a centrist party and it’s not changed their fortunes (nor has it stopped people saying they’ve gone extreme left).

If the British people had been demanding centrism, there was a Liberal Democrat option right there. People didn’t jump to it.

Labour’s share of the vote was still better than it had been in 2010 and 2015, but the Conservative share was its highest since 1979. People don’t want wishy washy half arsedness anymore, as much as the liberal technocrats wish it was so.

Anyway most of the world has moved on from the GFC. Thanks to the abysmal policies of the Tories and Libdems they are still in the trough.

lol. Budget deficit got cut from 10% to under 2% of gdp whilst increasing employment to record numbers. Suire they should have been far more aggressive in cutting spending but they were hardly "abysmal".

As for most of the world having moved on from the GFC thats laughable. Only a few days ago Bernanke was talking of negative interest rates.

Amazon etc killing retail is hardly unique to the UK. Large proportion of Chapel St was for let last time I was in Melbourne.

The number of employed people in the UK has risen again, to a new record number of 32.7 million people between November and January, figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) show.

The 76.1% employment rate is the highest since records began in 1971.

Unemployment fell by 35,000 to 1.34 million in the period, putting the rate below 4% for the first time since 1975.

‘if shopping strips etc are so terminal. Perhaps the uk should be redeveloping them into residential instead of grabbing every last field they can cram houses into

They are. Three large hardware stores near me are all getting developed in to flats. Building on greenfield land in the UK is rather hard.

Monbiot on the oligarchs destroying democracy.

Put simply: Massive social media campaigns spreading lies, and a population not educated on how to discern good sources from bad.

Why does the left legitimately like using lies as their main reason for losing elections? The real lie is them using lies as their excuse.

Bit embarrassing for Britain’s education system then. Most educated electoral cohort in history yet less able to elect a Labour government than those with high school education who voted for Clement Attlee in 1945 while wartime propaganda was raging.

Put that on a bus.

Long Bailey been caught out twice over her background lately. Blatantly lied about who she worked for and how long.
She'll just put it on the side of a bus and it will become true.

It’s not about general education, it’s about specific education on digital information sources.
