2020 Draft Day Wash Up - Thoughts on our picks

Talk a big game and then reach for foot soldier with Match Winners on the table. FMD. We are to mediocrity what the Storm are to success.

The Club is actually laughable. We are going to Grind our way into peoples hearts, everything we do is uninspiring, there is no theatre. There is no thought of bums on seats and excitement.

Just another two vanilla mehs to add to Dumont, Ziebell, Mahony, Tyson and others who are equally vanilla and meh.

Because Phoenix Spicer and Eddie Ford are so vanilla. FMD

Found it ironical we were given a B rating for our drafting from the so called experts. We are building a midfield that will be the envy of other clubs.

I find it amusing that anyone can actually rate a draft before any of the kids set foot in their new club.

Happy as the proverbial pig. This potentially fixes our most glaring weakness, the midfield.

Interesting those complaining about not going for a tall forward, wait until the rookie draft, free agents and mid-season draft; then judge the off-season acquisitions as a whole. Much like during the trade period, I am looking at the total incomings before passing judgement.

Phillips is hardly "vanilla" either. Powell is a ball magnet and barely anyone has any footage of Lazzaro.

Posters get salty 'cos their favourites from 2 min you tube videos are over looked.

My Take

First up, Will, we took the best genuine midfielder, a Victorian no less, no injury concerns, no flight risk, a leader, a two-way runner, a one touch, assured, leader. Should play Round 1 and for the next 200 games.

Second up, Powell, we took the best genuine midfielder from SA, no injury concerns, a two-way runner, a one touch, true ball magnet. We have been crying out for an accumulator of his type for a decade.

Third Charlie, bottom age numbers are terrific, another leader, driven, hard worker. Look at his 2019 numbers then look at his testing results. On his trajectory, he looks a bargain.

Spicer. We all know how speculative this selection is but we haven't paid the earth and check out his 2019 vs 2020 numbers then look at his toys (speed, agility). With an ounce of luck, this kid will get them coming through the gates

Eddie. Talk about toys and tricks, this guy has them in spades and I'm wrapt we have him and more wrapt that we have Noble to harness those tricks. Could be an absolute weapon with maturity and consistency. He's the energiser bunny I wanted to compliment the 'foundation' picks of Phillips, Powell and Lazzaro

Ok so in summary you are ecstatic with what we have done! I'm likewise maybe you should have a chat to usayed givashe!

Watched all the highlights and pretty keen on the overall group except maybe a little unsure strategically if we needed Charlie. Spicer was surprisingly effective moving inside 50 so I don't think he is just a speculative small forward, looks like he has the tools to provide wing-HF transition.

My order of preferences for the guys leftover:

1. Heath - Not going to lie - I really want Heath. 202cm, hard tackling ruckman who has developed late. He has an October birthday which suggests there's room for further growth to his frame and development in addition to the jump he already made at the beginning of this year from a football/production point of view (granted, it was in practice matches)

2. Dumesny - Had Dumesny in my top 20 mid-way through this season. Played SANFL seniors and had no issue finding the footy on a wing and back flank. We need more depth at half back and if we want it this is our man. The criticisms would be that he doesn't have any stand-out traits. In a sense, he's Dumont without the contested ability and more natural on a back flank. (I love Dumont, so that's not an insult either)

3. Baldwin - Risk vs reward pick but totally worth it for a rookie spot if we want to put the effort into nursing him through his ACL and pray he reaches his potential as a KPF.

4. Kolar - Another project type. Could play as an athletic 2nd/3rd tall defender or 2nd/3rd tall forward at 194cm with great athletic traits.

5. Maher - Dangerfield-type explosiveness in stoppages and real metres gained type of player. He has some really exciting traits that are worth taking a punt with a rookie spot.

EDIT: Just realised Sam Collins is still around. I'd have him at #2 behind Heath. He'd be up there as one of the most underrated players in this draft for me.

Backline talls are fine with walk bmac Corr and tazz.... have mm in the wings too...then lmac first name down then have young Perez hayden atley competing for the two HBF spots.... so think backline is ok depending how young and Perez develop.... would like to add eggy to the mix and I've assumed Bonar goes back to the mid fwd

Phillips - We picked the best mid in the draft. Relentless, aggressive tough, courageous but also very balanced. Has good foot skills and elite handballing to match his elite footy IQ and decision making. The ultimate professional who will no doubt play a lot of AFL footy next year. Future captain material. Stoked.

Powell - Accumulator who finds the footy at will. Tough, smart and runs hard both ways. Elite by hand and has high footy IQ. Knows when and where to run. How long have we been screaming out for mids who can find the footy consistently? He'll be a slower burn compared to Phillips but I think he'll play a few games next year. You could argue we picked the two most consistent genuine mids with these two picks.

Lazzarro - Little bit perplexed with this pick considering the first two. But its hard to argue with his underage footy form. He finds the footy at will and when he doesn't have it he tackles hard. Another strong two-way runner who loves the contested stuff and tackling. He is zippy and makes good decisions. Super smart off field with strong leadership.

Spicer -
X-factor in spades. Smooth moving, lightning quick, freakish agility. Gets up the ground and finds the footy and tackles like a maniac. High risk, high reward type. Will be a slow burn, but all the pieces are there to develop an elite small forward.

Ford -
Another with x-factor in spades. Tough, hard tackling and plays with flair. Elite overhead, with a long accurate boot. Testing, heights and weight are just as good as Hollands & Perkins. I don't understand why he slipped so far? I'm so confident that he'll end up being a player.

Overall Summary

I wasn't expecting us to pick Phillips, but I rate him super highly so I'm stoked. Really surprised we didn't go tall early especially considering we lost Brown, but our list management team are obviously prioritising building the midfield first, or perhaps we really just didn't rate McDonald? If the midfield was our priority then we have well and truly achieved that especially with our first two picks. With our 3 midfielders we've focused on tough, two way runners who find the footy with ease. All 3 have strong leadership credentials and stand up in big games. All big ticks.

With the other two picks we've gone with highlight reel x-factor types. Ford I can still can't believe slipped that far. It's perplexing to me, but a big win for the club. He has huge huge upside and has been busting his ass during Covid to take his athleticism to another level. Spicer will be a slow burn, but looks a very high end talent with his ball use and agility.

Our list is a little light on for Key Forwards, but in this draft we've taken good balance of excitement and pure footballing ability.

Well done North.

I think we have an okay backline. Corr will add to that.

Our backs problem was that the midfield allowed the ball in there too often for them to defend against.

Considering how shit we were, I was impressed at times about how we kept the score line in check. With 99 being the worst against Fremantle in the penultimate game and 49 against the Eagles in the last of the season.

Fix the midfield and a lot of other problems will disappear.

The general consensus is one of confusion around the Lazz pick, which stems from three things IMO:

1 - 3 inside mids
2 - Lack of highlights/media exposure
3 - Caroll was on the board

As I said earlier, there has to be a reason we "reached". I have a feeling he was quite a bit higher on our board then 30's & they clearly thought he was too good to pass up despite adding 2 inside mids already.

Yep, I agree and have been saying this since the end of season. I reckon the backline is solid and will be top class over time and experience

And follows same format ie an order of picks? And assume not delisted in this?

Correct, PSD then Rookie draft in the ladder finishing position. It'll just be a draft tracker on the afl website.
