Orazio Fantasia stepped out in a Port Adelaide guernsey for the first time on Monday in a move that may release Connor Rozee into the Power’s engine room.

The Essendon recruit started training early as Port Adelaide’s 1-4 year players began their pre-season campaigns at Alberton alongside All-Australian big man Charlie Dixon.

Rozee, 20, said he and Zak Butters were both excited about the potential of playing more midfield minutes with Fantasia in the forwardline.

“I’ve had small discussions (with the coaches) here and there about what it’s going to do to my role, it might let me go into the midfield a little bit more which will be enjoyable and it might free up a few of the other boys who play a lot forward as well,” he said.

“It’s probably not a question for me, you’d have to ask one of the coaching group but we’ll both be fighting for those midfield minutes.

The 1999=2000 preseason was cut short by a month because of the Sydney Olympics.

The whole 2000 season including the Ansett Cup games was brought forward a month, so that the GF finished the first Saturday in September, the next weekend was a free weekend, then we had the build up with the flame travelling thru Sydney and then on the Friday night 15th was the Olympics opening ceremony.

This year the 2020 season ended a month late so the 2020-21 preseason will be a month shorter for all players.

Essendon finished minor premiers at the end of 1999, lost the prelim final by a kick, were shattered, were angry and IMO benefitted from a shorter preseason, as they went into the Ansett Cup with a win everything attitude, smashed everybody they played, won the cup, and took that attitude into the main season. They played angry and went seeking revenge.

I thought at the time (and haven't changed my opinion) that the shorter preseason helped Essendon maintain the rage and attacked the 2000 season with a manic desire to atone for the 1999 Prelim final stuff up.

I remember reading stories about their Fitness Head Coach, John Quinn who joined them after the 1998 season ended, come from athletics coaching, really cranked up their workload for the 1999-2000 preseason. It's pretty much why we pinched his assistant Andrew Russell ( who also had an athletics background) at the end of the 2000 season.

I hope history repeats and we attack the shorter preseason and next season the same way Essendon did 2 decades ago and maintain the rage. Guess we will find out over the next few weeks how serious we are and how we attack the couple of preseason games we will play.

I think playing the Richmond club song continuously during the preseason would serve to constructively focus the players rage for 2021. Probably wouldn't hurt to play it in the club rooms before matches. Its a proven motivational tool.

I want THIS to look like THIS .......

I'm disappointed to see Marshall has been allowed topside. He should be locked in the weights room for the next couple of months or so in the hopes that he puts on some muscle. Maybe some boxing sparring sessions with Charlie, Hammer and Jonas might not go astray either.

Its good to see Orazio out early and hopefully our young forwards are taking the opportunity to learn everything useful he has to offer about playing as a small forward. It would be a big win to have the likes of Williams, Orazio, Farrell and Woodcock form a functional small forward unit while allowing the likes of Rozee, Butters and possibly SPP to play more midfield minutes. Hopefully all of our forwards are having some productive goal kicking practice as well.
