This is normal.
Clarko has taken a more direct interest in preseason during the rebuild but he used to let the assistants run a large part of preseason including coaching NAB

Bit about growth for them, bit about letting him focus on other things like his own growth.

We've had Bolton and others run most sessions during the threepeat etc
Maybe Clarko thinks we are nearly ready.

I'd say it's more like the majority of the players get the structures and the coaches are all bedded in as well.

We had a couple of years with a lot of turn over on and off the field. Big transition in player leadership and pretty complete restructure of positional coaches other than Monky

But what about Schoenmakers every year at this time. Never have there been so many Ivan Drago gifs, images and memes going around the internet as those early preseason Schoey days :D. Some players come back looking massive. Many of them still train during their break but maybe some hit the weights more than others. It could also be Boyd managing their programs and getting some of them bigger before the season comes and they lean out again. At least we don't have any Motlop, Hawkins type of physiques getting around the oval
Looks like Tarzan plays like Jane :)

no doubt there is no dissuading about size going on now. Jack Russell paranoid about blokes being too “Hollywood” big.

Jack was obviously elite but year on year we had either the overall lightest team or top 2-3 lighted team in the AFL.. We were always 3-4kgs lighter than the Tiges and Geelong, it’s no coincidence that we struggled with contested footy whilst Jack was in charge. Those 2-4kgs mean everything inside the coal face, I’m glad the boys are looking a bit stronger.

I think Jack was always striving for the optimal strength / size / endurance balance.

Continuity among the coaches has typically led to premierships under Clarkson.
We will be dangerous in 2020 and perhaps top 4, but 2021 we will certainly be a top contender IMO.

Not sure we can diminish anything Russell did at Hawthorn... we won four premierships under his stewardship.

I think one of the above posters is right when he said, "Jack was always striving for the optimal strength / size / endurance balance" - that's exactly what he was doing.
Agree but I think he had us a shade light.

Or what he believed the optimal balance was. That's the thing.

Jack did fantastic things for the club and he's a tremendous fitness guy, but it's interesting to see the philosophical differences between strength and conditioning coaches. It appears that Boyd is different and has a different attitude towards what is best for the players. He's definitely well studied enough, particularly in the field of AFL related fitness work.

People are acting like I'm talking shit about Jack's record at the club but it's not that at all. I'm just keen to see how Hawthorn play with a different strength and conditioning focus, particularly now that our list is so much different.

I don’t think Boyd is a big departure from jack. I expect to see us still at the bottom end for weight/size even if we are a little bigger.

Yeah, not sure on that... From all I am hearing Boyd does like the boys to be a bit stronger and bigger, not to say it will be drastic change but I would expect a kg or 2 more on a lot of the lads.

Based on the photos a couple look bigger but the rest look pretty much the same. Players usually look ripped at this time of year. I guess we will know more at the end of preseason.

I reckon there is an overall increase in size across the playing group. That's not to say all players are noticeably bigger, but many are. That's just my opinion, but I have also heard that gym/weights work has been more intense than usual this pre-season.

The fitness change is due to the game plan change where we have moved to a more contested brand of football.
This may have the side effect of us not running out the season (especially the 1 - 4 years).
Resting the older players during the season may be more important going forward

Yeah we don’t want to be Geelong and be out of puff by half way through the season.
