Today's Herald Sun has Johnson at 20. If we are keeping first round, 5, Ward seems safest best. It is interesting that the Age said clubs reluctant to trade out of top 10, if there would be an enticing offer, trade down, would be interested to know type of players we could pick up instead of Ward. I wonder why we would not go for a local like Knevitt as opposed to Johnson with our pick in 20s. Anyway we are still in a great position with our 2 picks in 20s- players like Butler, Taylor, Knevitt, Bazzo, Clarke, most if not all would be available plus sliders.

Johnson at #20 they having a laugh.

When have we ever taken draft prediction from the herald sun. McKenzie will pick the best talent available and Johnson test above almost all of that’s a sign.

He seems a very McKenzie pick - elite athlete, very composed and clean with ball, great foot skills etc with upside when puts on 10kg. As that 2nd mid (not no 1 grunt ball winner) Johnson has everything to be elite. Reckon he’s a better prospect than Ward (I wouldn’t be surprised if we had no interest in Ward given lacks speed/power we seem to prioritise)
Ward lacks speed, really?

Ward lacks speed, really?

He's an aerobic beast. He moves brilliantly from contest to contest and I think moves fine through congestion. But he's not particularly explosive. I don't think he'll be bursting away from his own clearance or running through tackles.

Johnson's testing indicates that he can be that explosive/agile player but tbh I didn't see it so much in his game. He has that style where he doesn't look like he's exerting a lot of energy/effort, but often that's just a sign of composure and efficiency.

??? That’s endurance. His 20m/agility/jumping from earlier in season were poor-average for a small mid to go in first round.

This argument has been had to death on this board, but endurance speed is it's own skill. Dylan Moore is a great example. He's not quick over 20m but he's insanely fast over 200m when we switch from defence to attack or vice versa. Ward (like Sam Walsh) appears to possess that skill also.

His 20m wasn't poor it just wasn't elite are will drafting prospects for the 100m sprint or are we drafting an AFL player?
It depends on what we are after. Assume both players have the same level of talent but one has elite explosiveness and the other has elite endurance. If we want a Martin type we go with explosiveness, if we want a Crawford type we go with endurance.

I'll mention it again, but I think our picks 59 and 64 are more valuable than what they appear to be on face value currently.

The Pies have 6 picks before them, the Dogs have 5. The Giants also have 2 which they'll need to use on Fahey and the Saints 1 and another in between although have 2 players they might be matching for. Are there any other teams potentially matching bids before then?

I know not necessarily every single one of those picks will be required for the bids and obviously the team matching gets the pick at the time, but 59 and 64 could end up being closer to 50 and 54 when they are actually up, which means we'd be taking the players at worst 45-50 on our list of 'open' options (although you'd think we'd get players a bit higher given different teams have different orders).

Yep, and i'm almost certain we'll love somebody who slides and package up these picks to swoop in like we did with Brockman last season.

Callaghan:
“If you ask any Victorian boy I’m sure they’d say they would love to stay in Melbourne, but you don’t really get a choice,” he said
Where was this quote taken from?

Thought Moore was noticeably faster this year, with a shorter running style reckon he has done a lot of work here to go with his elite endurance.

We sit in a position when we could gain one of those players that slide like Sonsie, Draper, Chesser, Butler, Taylor.. . We probs lucky to just get one. Maybe then we look at Clarke, Brown (if Cats don't take him, and they probs will as they probs get that Dogs pick). I do love Warner as a prospect, like how much drive he brings from the midfield & tidy kick with great endurance.

Decently big if true, GWS take Andrews then he might just slip until us, no clubs have been burned bigger than Adelaide and the Suns on "homesickness"
Even the thought of Callaghan slipping to us has a few opposition fans pretty triggered.

I put it my “prediction” in the competition thread as a point of difference and a Cats fan jumped on the hook within 15 mins. 😂

If Suns only drafted players who wanted to go there, they would have an empty list. They will pick Callaghan if available

With only a couple of days to go before the draft I’m content if we stick with our draft hand as is. I want MM to take who he thinks is BPA with pick 5 (7) and then who he* feels is the BPA slider with our first pick in the 20s. Then with our second pick in the 20s I’m all for him taking a risk on a player with huge upside.

*I am aware that Mackenzie isn’t alone in making the picks himself but it Is his ass on the line if things don’t work out.
