That's because by leaving Fox, you cut yourself off from millions of sports fans - which is the A-League's target, and arguably core, audience. But most are not hard core enough fans to be bothering with a subscription streaming service just to watch the league. Streaming, IMO, is a royal pain in the arse for someone like me who likes to channel hop around the dozen or so Foxtel sports channels. Consequently my night (after a day of kids sport) was the NBL and now i've just flicked it over to the F2. I notice there's some La Liga on a bit later so i'll probably watch a bit of that too. But no A-League. Not anymore.

I never really understood the apparent optimism of the A-League's TV/streaming deal for that reason.
it is where I think paramount has stuffed up.

They really needed the EPL. To become that number channel for soccer fans. Now, it is one of (way too) many.

Well, you know, it won't be the first time a TV exec has been sold a pup, and I daresay it won't be the last.
I guess if they stick fast to keeping the A-League on the main channel for the whole season (a full six months or so), then we will know they are damn serious about the plan, come what may.
At some point in one of those Monday morning team meetings, someone will have the guts to ask: are we really going to accept such sub-par ratings for prime time on the main channel??
Or maybe at some point, the Asia-Pacific Division Head will finally pay attention to one of those emails, and finally say: WTF??!!

There would be budgets, detailed budgets that underline the decision to buy 10 & to invest in soccer - dont worry about an email, the numbers would do the talking.

Of course there would be budgets, detailed budgets that underlined the decision to buy 10 & to invest in soccer -
but and it's an all important but, they are projections, budgets based on projections.
The all important question is when is the upswing projected.

Not sure if you have had a projection go bad, these decisions arent minor, they will be closely watched & the management will be measured by the results.
Projections that go bad lead are reflected by the share price :https://www.viacomcbs.com/about
The detail of any major investment is measured right down to basic detail & more so when it underperforms.

The decision to get into Australia will be closely watched & careers are on the line. The FTA business purchased will be developed along the lines of its parent.
IF the AGP gets off the ground in 2022, it will be broadcast locally by 10 & we can expect head office to be the guests of F1's US owners here in Melbourne.

the fact that these 2 games are within 1K showcases everything which went wrong with the A-leagues expansion. For those who don't know, Wellington are currently playing in Wollongong.

A few interesting observations about the weekend's crowd figures:

1. the 30k who turned up at the MCG (presumably to watch a replay on the big screen??) represents about 15 to 20% of Melbourne's supporter base
2. the get together of such a small supporter base just about equalled the total round attendance to 6 A-League games, early in their season, at a time when there almost no other sport on
3. even the NBL surpassed the A-League attendance by some 15%, with same amount of games on.

TV ratings.

This is quite extraordinary.
SBS defeated Ten's main channel on Saturday for total share of viewing audience.
Any TV exec wanting to persist with that sort of outcome on a permanent basis is going to lose his or her job.
EVen 7Two was a just a fraction below Ten main channel's total viewership.

Yeh it’s not really adding up. Even if all of those 80,000 odd subscribe to Paramount they are still going backwards.

Edit. It also again shows just how good of a deal this is for the A league.

Me personally ?
I've seen many a business projection go pear-shaped and end badly.

I was questioning your experience given the size & complexity of ViacomCBS . They have the inhouse expertise to assess TEN & plan its redemption as a profitable contributor.
The soccer decision seems strange only if a short term result is expected. It is not going to be suddenly successful.

Or maybe never be successful and make 10 money!
If the ratings don't improve a lot on their main channel this season I can see the soccer being relegated to one of 10s other channels next year!

BBL started last night in front of a pretty abysmal crowd TBH. TV numbers were half decent though, with 500k 5 city and another 200k or so on Fox. 7 would be happy with that you'd think.

On the A League, it's even getting outrated now by the filler on 10's multis, with NCIS and big bang theory repeats attracting larger audiences.

They would have all done their "homework". In the end - it's still a gamble.

That's why I stated "The all important question is when is the upswing projected."

Seven’s Supercars Championship: Bathurst 1000 race was the #1 entertainment program on Sunday night ...

The race brought in a metro audience of 747,000, while the last 15 minutes when the winner was announced won all three key advertising demos. The last 15 minutes of the episode saw 816,000 metro viewers tune in.
Next in sports entertainment, was Seven’s Cricket: Big Bash League opener which saw the Sydney Sixers post its highest-ever total in record win over Melbourne Stars, and pulled in a metro audience of 454,000.

Worked in the A-league for a few years around 3 years ago. They just havent found their feet unfortunately in terms of generating consistent, good crowds.

Its just too easy to stay at home now and watch Liverpool/ManU/Real Madrid of which nearly all domestic A-league fans also follow.

Also, they are charging serious $$ for sub par football, and the player merry go round is actually hurting the league now.

There was a big debate when i was there about the timing of the season, and they were concerned if they went to Winter they would be eaten up by the AFL. Well unfortunately they are becoming the 3rd ranked summer sport behind cricket and basketball now, so its much of a muchness really.

They think adding new teams will get them market share, but it dilutes the calibre of the matches as there isnt enough professional quality in the Australian game.

They are 30 years away from making an impact against the NRL/AFL. By that time the AFL will be so dominant it will barely notice them.

They need get a following, dont concern themselves with AFL/NRL who are mainstream sports. That is problematic for enthusiasts of international game & they need to come to grips with where the game stands.
The Socceroos & Matildas will get a following & that should be the goal of the game in the near future.

The Seven Network’s coverage of the Repco Bathurst 1000 from Mount Panorama was a hit with television audiences yesterday, as over 4.1 million viewers tuned into the turbo-charged action on Channel 7 and 7mate.

Seven’s live and free coverage of the high-octane race averaged 1.28 million total viewers nationally with the Race average broadcast audience up 11.2% across the capital cities on Network 10’s coverage in 2020, and the Podium up 24.1% on last year.

More than three-quarters of the people who watched the race on television watched it on Seven, while more than 18.6 million minutes were streamed on 7plus, which grabbed a 64% share of live streaming yesterday.

Data: 7PR PRess Release

It's interesting that whenever any streaming service wants to boast about their numbers - they are very happy to make them public!
Otherwise, they prefer to keep it hush hush.

'While BVOD’s early app-led usage, predominantly on tablets, led to the phrase ‘catch-up TV’, the BVOD market has matured beyond this with Australian BVOD services 7Plus, 9Now, 10Play, Foxtel Now, SBS On-demand and iView now offering a banquet of unique content via digital-only channels, member exclusives and snackable edits of recent transmissions.'

I'm a techo Luddite, & battling to stay across the developments of what was television. There is plenty more detail in the link if interested.

All the owners literally care about is their investments, which is completely understandable, but goes against growing the game.

Look at the new teams, western united and Macarthur. The crowds they get are equivalent to local suburban AFL matches.

The politics and the agendas in football in this country is making it a laughing stock.
