Pick 36 - Geelong - Brady Hough (Outside Midfielder/Western Australia)

One of my favourites in this draft and honestly someone I feel goes first round. As an athletic outside midfielder Hough has proved himself as someone who can both get and use the ball well, he played an important role in Peel Thunders colts campaign before really starring for WA in the national carnival. To top off the year he played a senior game for Peel Thunder alongside some Freo players and managed to grab 22 disposals without looking out of place. Like Draper, Hough is a utility with the ability to slot anywhere the club that picks him desires, but unlike Draper I do prefer him in one position; the midfield. He has the ability to be a genuine goal kicking midfielder which is a great trait to have. I see Hough being another, like Draper, Butler and Alleer to push for selection in 2022 and help strengthen the next core Geelong group

ALSO CONSIDERED: Jesse Motlop, Corey Warner, Sam Banks

Im on his bandwagon this year, can just play in all positions from forward to back. Think he's best forward of centre but still solid.

PICK 29 - RICHMOND TIGERS - BLAKE HOWES - 192cm 80kg - FWD/WING

View attachment 1263605 Image thanks to Gratees

At this point in the draft we have got what we need to regenerate our team and provide developing back up in most ares of need. I had many thoughts on who to choose next and going to the footage and points system Blake Howes was the pick.
Alleer, Frost and Pegoraro for defense purposes were thought of but too many things about their game play did not warrant a national draft pick at this point, more later draft or rookie from our point of view.
Butler and Clarke came into mind, and although i like Butler and rate him, the same cannot be said of his disposal and/or sometimes his decision making. Clarke was a hard one, but i like the Taylor, Murley combo and their style of play better than Clarke's.
Long, Warner, Roberts were thought of as another mid to add to the mix, but once again in regards to Long and Roberts, too many things pointed to a no from my perspective (nothing really against them but list fit wise). Warner again, size counted against him with Ward already joining the mix with Murley and Taylor projecting starters as fwd's and perhaps def in the future. So another smaller mid was not an option.
I was always going to select both Taylor and Murley with the two previous picks and with the last pick, if Rhett Bazzo, Mitch Knevitt or Tom brown were available they would have been picked here at Pick 30 in that order of want/need.

That being said, Blake in my opinion, is the best available fit and need for Richmond.
He is a highly athletic and agile forward who has great hands, excellent decision making skills, can find the goals and also play off the wing position and half forward line very well.
"The biggest strength of Howes’ game is his vertical leap, as he is regularly able to get higher in the air than taller opponents which allows him to take his marks easier. At times, this sees him play as a forward target due to his aerial ability.
At the next level, he looms as a handy third tall option or develop-able outside type.
Much of his versatile quality comes through his athleticism, with the springy leap helping his forward craft and a speed-endurance mix boding well for midfield minutes. He showcased his running capacity with a 6:08 2km time in October, and has all the athletic upside which recruiters look for." AFL DRAFT CENTRAL

you're up Monocle
Is Hugo Ralphsmith a good player comparison for this bloke? Seems to have a similar mix of speed, endurance and overhead marking. Could we pop one on each wing? ;)

Both have similar traits, Howes beings slightly taller and probably more athletic. Hugo is more of a run, carry, evade and deliver type, and Howes could be more of a marking run and carry tackler from the wing. I think the wing position suits them both but Hugo will need to build his endurance base and tackle more, however he does do a lot of 1 percenters right to help the team. Neither have a big contested game and therefore are more outside leaning which is not a bad thing for wingers but i would like them to improve that area. Two Sandy Dragon wingman would suit me in the future.
Funnily enough, just out today on AFL site is a video of Cal Twomey and Nat Edwards talking about Howes so check it out.

Pick 39 - Paul Curtis
Pick 39 - Sydney Swans

Paul Curtis - Western Jets/Vic metro

181cm/ 73kg - Small forward

It was a toss up whether to add another mid in Browne/ Warner or add a player who could be a star in the Sydney set up, in Curtis. With gray gone, ronke still without a contract next year and Taylor not really in the coaches long term plans, there is need for genuine small forward depth behind papley and wicks. Curtis is a pure goal kicking small forward, with great crumbing skills and has some of the best goal sense you’ll find. Yes Sydney need more KPD but on my board no one left was worthy of being taken around this pick, and a young key back is not going to have a significant impact on this side next year. There are a couple left on the board that’ll be in the range of the swans next pick.

The one change i would make though is take Butler or Aleer over Murley.
I wouldn't, Murley is a gun but just had his injuries this year. He could end up a very good footballer at AFL level, in the Butters mold and definitely worth the selection.

His recent combine testing was outstanding too.

Pick 40 - Alastair Lord
Pick 40 - Brisbane - Alastair Lord
180cm/76kg
Norwood/South Australia

After missing out on Chesser and Wilmot early I was keen to add some speed across half back with this selection. There's actually a few options I liked here but I think Lord has the most upside. He is a line-breaker with top level speed and agility, whose run and carry is probably his best feature. His use by foot is solid enough and his decision-making is typically sound. What I like best about Lord is his appetite for turning defence into attack. He'll overlap run all day and accumulate a fair bit of the footy. He's primarily an outside ball winner at the moment which probably limits his ability to transition into the midfield and whilst he's a capable tackler and defender 1 on 1, he'll need to improve in those areas as he rises to AFL level.

So no inside mids or key defenders? We need a key defender (at one of the picks) even if it’s a reach. Do we really need a small forward? How’s he getting a game with Papley, Hayward and Wicks there? Surely getting some genuine mid depth is key if there wasn’t a defender.

What exactly do you think Ned Long is?

A forward-mid who might be a mid. That’s the pick I don’t mind (actually like that one) anyway. It’s the other two that I hope are nowhere near our picks on draft day. We need genuine mids and a KPD that’s our two areas. Which one has been addressed?

Long has played a good majoroty of his game time this season in the midfield, at least 80% at a conservative estimate.
As for KPD's, it's pretty unanimous that it's a below par talls draft, why would you want a tall player drafted if the selectors feel they wont make it

Then take an inside mid. Those are the two areas we need with Kennedy only having a year or so left. Small forward seems a very weird pick.

Pick 41 - Jack Williams, Pick 42 - Arthur Jones
Pick 41 - Jack Williams - Key forward / ruck / defender - 195cm/95kg - East Fremantle/ Western Australia

I doubt this kid is blowing out to the 40's and but here we are. The talented Key position forward has shown that he can be versatile, playing a mixture of roles up forward, in the ruck and even in defence. Williams has sticky hands and looked comfortable playing as a defender in the most recent AFL championships game against South Australia. Either way, Williams provides some key position depth for the forwards and can even become a partner for Ben McKay and Aiden Corr.

2021 averages: 14.5 disposals, 9.2 hitouts, 5.9 marks, 2.7 goals per game (WAFL colts)

Highlights

Pick 42 - Arthur Jones - Forward/Wing - 178cm/60kg - Claremont / Western Australia

Went with the Krakouer family link here. Arthur is the nephew of North Melbourne champions Jimmy and Phil Krakouer. Jones is an excitement machine who has great mix of speed, endurance and provides plenty of defensive pressure. Averaging 22 disposals, five inside 50s, four clearances, four tackles and 0.5 goals at PSA level, the exciting Jones announced himself on Grand Final day where he amassed 16 disposals, six inside-50s and kicked a couple of classy goals in WA’s national under-19s carnival victory over South Australia at Optus Stadium. It would be great to have some Krakouer magic lighting up the forward line like his uncles did in the past.

Pick 43 - Charlie Molan
Pick 43 - Melbourne - Charlie Molan
187cm 86kg - Medium Utility

I was debating between Molan and his GWV teammate Kai Lohmann but after taking the high tempo player in Clarke I’ve gone with a more week to week reliable player in Molan.

An underrated player due to playing a more defensive game than most and being played in a range of positions so he couldn’t settle. There isn’t many weaknesses to Molans game, he isn’t flashy but is reliable every week and is athletic and strong enough to play any role and even play next year.

Super stoked with my Melbourne picks and I’ll go early and say the demons have won the draft 😂

I had Molan's write up ready for my next pick 😥

Pick 44 - Kai Lohmann
Plenty of good talent still on the board, but I'm going for someone who can provide a point of difference inside 50 for the Magpies.

Pick 44 - Collingwood selects Kai Lohmann (GWV Rebels/Vic Country)

“An elite athlete who has a combination of speed, evasion and vertical leap, making him a damaging forward who is clean overhead and can also get things done at ground level.”

Kai Lohmann is an exciting talent out of the Greater Western Victoria (GWV) Rebels who has come on in leaps and bounds this year. The athletic talent can do some serious damage with ball in hand, and is clean in the air and at the coalface. He does have areas to improve such as his off-ball work and accumulation, but his overall potential is quite high and could be one of the bolters in the draft.

STRENGTHS:

+ Speed
+ Evasion
+ Marking
+ Athleticism
+ Clean hands
+ Ground level work

IMPROVEMENTS:

– Accumulation
– Off-ball work
– Finishing

Lohmann has some top-end athletic traits that immediately catch the eye, and it showed in his AFL Vic Country Draft Combine testing. Recording the fourth fastest time in the 20m sprint, Lohmann also is able to compete in the air and has some outstanding evasion. The Rebels half-forward is not a massive ball winner, having only picked up 20-plus disposals one (against Gippsland Power in Round 8), but he can really produce some eye-catching moments through either soaring for a mark or ankle-breaking defenders to have shots on goal.

He might be flying under the radar somewhat given his potential and upside, but he has come a long way since even the start of the season. Viewed as a player that had to improve his work rate and be more team-oriented in front of goal – kicking 2.10 in his first seven games – Lohmann finished the year with 3.1 and was able to have greater impact on the scoreboard, though not just off his own boot. At times he might try to do too much with ball in hand, but his ability to do magical things was certainly what caught the eye during 2021, and has thrown himself right into mid-draft contention.

Lohmann is a player who can be a marking option or crumbing option inside 50, and he often plays as that high half-forward who can sniff out a goal. He has clean hands and can dish off the quick hands to teammates when in close, or receive on the outside and go for a run. Given time and space, Lohmann has the potential to do a lot of damage, and his aerial and ground work can be equally impactful. If he continues to build on his areas of improvement and can convert his chances in front of goal, he is a player to watch in the future.

DRAFT RANGE: 25-40

SUMMARY:

Kai Lohmann is tipped to go mid-draft, with some clubs viewing the Rebels speedster as a second round option. He has plenty of upside, and his athletic traits and ability to make things happen – particularly through evasion – are what sets him aside from some others. He does have areas to improve on, but he made noticeable strides in 2021, and is someone, who, with the right environment, could flourish and be a value selection in the future.

Pick 45 - Kade Dittmar
Pick 45 - Geelong - Kade Dittmar (Inside Midfielder/Western Australia)

For my last pick I decided to talk about a talent I like a bit later on, if I was going best available here it'd probably be James Tunstill or Morgan Ferres.

In the end I went with Kade Dittmar. Dittmar has been on the radar all year as an inside contested bull and in the last game vs SA he finally put all the pieces of the puzzle together. He's one of the strongest players in the draft and has shown in the WAFL this year the ability to be a goal kicking mid. The biggest knock on his game this year has been skills under pressure, but in his last game he finally stopped dropping the ball on the boot and used his footy smarts to put the ball in the right place, even if it wasn't always a perfect kick. He's the kind of player you want playing for you in the last quarter of a game and brings real intensity into the midfield. At pick 45 he still has to build that consistency with his skills under pressure but I think he's got all the tools to make it and Dittmar is a perfect late pick and will help Geelong build a strong young midfield core

ALSO CONSIDERED: Jake Soligo, Shay Linke, Harvey Harrison, Kaden Harbour, Miller Bergman

Surprised no-one is interested in Greg Clark just yet. Maybe a sneaky Eagles or Freo pick later on in the piece...
