Injured: Michael Hurley

It’s a new era at Essendon in 2021 and that’s reflected in what shapes as a vastly different best 22 without the likes of Adam Saad, Joe Daniher and Orazio Fantasia at the club.

Nick Hind is expected to fill Saad’s role and play early, while reigning best and fairest winner Jordan Ridley forms a key part of the back six which will welcome Dyson Heppell this year.

Further up the field, Kyle Langford will be looking to continue his improvement of late, while Jye Caldwell was impressive in the side’s scratch match against Carlton on Thursday and is likely to play.

Top-10 draft picks Nik Cox and Archie Perkins are well in the frame to make their debuts in Round 1 as well.

How the side shapes up in the forward line is probably of most interest, with Harry Jones and Peter Wright set to play early on.

Pretty clear that they're not across the fact Ambrose is playing forward, Laverde's playing back, as well as Ambrose and Stringer both being injured.

Cox stiff if 'right now' is the consideration. Played a better prac match than Perkins and sounds like he has trained better too.

That backline feels a bit too tall. Also doubt Perkins makes the round 1 team

Sadly i feel the coaches will be playing musical chairs with at least half a dozen players until midway through the season before figuring out who plays where. Laverde could've been primed for a big start but the move down back won't work.

I'm over Francis in our best team, simply not reliable.....needs to do a Ridley of last year to earn his stay otherwise send him back....

B: Ridley Hooker Redman
HB: Hind Stewart Heppell
C: Langford Caldwell Merrett
HF: Smith Jones Stringer
F: Waterman Wright Tippa
FOLL: Draper Shiel McGrath
INTER: Parish Cox Snelling Ham
Emerg: Guelfi Cahill Laverde BZT Bryan Perkins

Too unreliable & big ? on his tank: Francis (hence omitted)
Never to be seen again at AFL level: Cutler (OMG )

Hey guys, fantasy question here.

Just wondering if the Bombers have any draftees from either 2020, or the last couple years who are doing well in the intra-club games/scratch match from this week. Would you expect them to be best 22?

Thanks in advance.

Jones is a lock, Cahill and Cox both probably 50/50 at this stage, Perkins an outside chance.

If we sign Waterman he should play.

I'll have a dip at our Round 1 side:

FB: Cahill - Hooker - Hind
HB: Heppell - Francis - Ridley
C: Merrett - Langford - McGrath
R: Draper - Shiel - Caldwell
HF: Smith - Jones - Waterman
FF: AMT - Wright - Cox
Int: Guelfi, Ham, Parish, Redman

Waterman and Jones should play round 1. Jones might be in and out if his form (as I would expect) is a bit up and down.

Cox is a good chance to play, but due to his size I suspect he's not a walk up start every week.

Cahill will play every week if fit. Peter Wright might be a decent mid-pricer, you'd think he plays most weeks.

Draper is an unholy monster and will be in the top 3 rucks in the game by seasons end.

Don't think Stewart gets a game at either end?

Who does he replace?
If they insist on playing him defence (which I disagree with), Francis or Redman. If forward, Guelfi with Smith playing more middle.

Also think Snelling is a likely starter at this stage

Okay, what I think should happen for round 1 with what I have as their best 22 replacements in brackets:

FB: Aaron Francis - Cale Hooker - Nick Hind
HB: Jordan Ridley - Brandon Zerk-Thatcher (Michael Hurley/Paddy Ambrose) - Ned Cahill
MF: Kyle Langford - Jye Caldwell - Zachary Merrett
HF: Devon Smith - James Stewart - Will Snelling
FF: Alec Waterman - Peter Wright - Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti
OB: Sam Draper - Andrew McGrath - Darcy Parish
IC: Dylan Shiel - Dyson Heppell - Brayden Ham - Matthew Guelfi (Jake Stringer)
