Replay the Melbourne final. Matho did not have a disposal he did nott butcher. Nothing but blind hack kicks or missed passes. Gave away several unneeded frees. His front on against Gawn was reportable, IMO. And he is not going to improve.

Did you watch Mitch this year? When he took his time he had some absolutely brilliant passes. Too often though when he perceived pressure he just hacked it forward. Mathieson is pretty similar. In the reserves he showed he can hit a target.

Are we supposedly trading for GC’s 19?

They have multiple second and third round picks now as well. Would be asking for something else back as well.

Next year's first I think was the thought.

I hope we do not trade next year's first. Sure we can get points in later rounds for Ashcroft but I think we will also need points for Fletcher and McMillan and if we trade our first we are likely to be in trouble regarding points and the associated list spots.

I am starting to lean this way as well. I believe that there was only 3 picks this year that we were going to make. we have those picks later in the draft to either move into next year or try move up a little this year. I can't believe that we are not talking to the dogs about pick swaps!

How do you know we are not talking to the Dogs?

I’m all for keeping our 2022 first round pick, but disagree with using it just for points. As long as we have the points to cover the Ashcroft bid, that’s all I’d be concerned about.

I’d rather trade our 2022 first round pick in to 2023 for a future first round pick.

I wouldn’t be concerned about any draft deficit on second round or later bids for Fletcher or McMillan.

Of course there’s all of next year to play out, but at this stage I don’t believe Fletcher or McMillan are viewed as first round picks.

Draft deficits are “paid” the day before the trade period begins, so if we carried a deficit in to 2023, it wouldn’t come off our two first round picks, but later picks.

This is true 🤔
A professional organisation like ours, you'd suspect would be talking to the Timbuktu seconds if it means getting and advantageous deal happening. Other than Collingwood ***king over The Suns every other club is very scrupulous and strategic with their dealings. You would find sixteen other clubs are talking with the Bulldogs.

Not sure Mathieson can manage this in a genuine pressure game. He has played well in some good wins. Was good against Richmond in a competitive game. But there are plenty of players with decent skills in the 2s who can't translate it to the 1s.
Mitch has quite good skills. He's not 100% reliable but hits some absolute bullets, and has one of the better non-preferred kicks in the side. It was frustrating at times watching him almost deliberately hack it forward when he had heaps of time. Not too damaging when it's kicking into the forward line but he did it a few times 15m out from goal which in the old days was a draggable offence.

McMillan’s really had the one stand out performance. Let’s see what he does next year.

Fletcher I’ve currently got as a mid-late second round type.

Ashcroft looking #1 for mine.

I’m not so worried about trading out our future first for Gold Coast’s 19 as long as we bring in one of their 2022 second or third rounds somehow.

This years draft along with Ashcroft next year is the crop that really should set us up for sustainable success and a long premiership window, if we get it right.

We use the Richmond model chaos ball (just move the bloody thing forward) when we can't clear the ball and are under pressure for some time.

Not all players can bring themselves to hack it forward and that's why they get run down occasionally or the ball gets turned over in a dangerous spot.

Hacking it forward can still be a turnover but it should happen down field so the team can reset the structures.

Having a player willing to just hack it and wear the poor stats (do the team thing) is important. Don't want too many, but one on field is valuable.

Thoughts on Matt Hammelman as a rookie option to fill in for Hippy?

I think it would be great personally. Always said the only issue Matt had was was between the ears and understanding he was good enough to step up. Seemed an issue at every level but once he thought he belonged he went very well. He was delisted first time around before he came to that realisation.

Fair enough but I do have some concerns that things could become very difficult if Fletcher or McMillan come on as we hope they do. Keeping the first for next year just gives us more flexibility for next year and as we have seen this year even late first round picks are worth a fair bit.

McMillan has had a bit of hype from the QAFL watchers and to me looks like a very nice Mitch replacement. Very nice tackler who is good as an outside in forward of centre wing / HFF.

Agree with the rating of Fletcher at the moment but he does have the skills to work his way up draft boards if he starts to find more of it.

Like this idea on the surface. I have always thought more guys deserved a second chance. It is very, very difficult for a player to return to the AFL once they have been delisted and miss out on being signed by another club immediately. Hammelman has shown he is one of if not the most prolific key forwards not on a list.
The difficulty will be list spots for us. I guess if we don't find a trade option we are happy with there might be a chance.

Look forward to seeing more of McMillan this year if that’s the case.

How did Collingwood beep Gold Coast
Gold Coast only have enough list spots to pick up 2-3 players this year.
2021 Starting with picks 3, 19, 22, 43 (46 after compo), 55 (58 after compo), 58, 66, 79
Trading 22, 46, 58 & 79 for Collingwood's 2022 picks is really just GCS trading this years dead picks (no list spots) for live picks next year.

You screwed us over when we were at our weakest poaching Karnesis & Aish. Now you're doing it to the Suns.

For shame!

GC will prelist a couple of their academy kids who look about second round standard and with the inside info might be higher talent wise than that. They don't really need the picks this year so pushing out to next year and positioning themselves as a deal maker makes sense. That is especially the case if the list sizes go back up.

If we were to end up with 3 first round picks I’d be looking at using 2 of them (ideally the later 2) to try and get inside the top 10 giving us a real go at either Goater or NWM.

What are Gold Coast getting out of that last deal?

Who knows. The joy of helping out another team's list management decisions, as they did when they traded the free pick 11 for the following year that the AFL gave them to Geelong to draft Jeremy Sharp at pick 27. A future first for a mid range second!

More seriously, their issue is that they don't have list spots and have to dump picks anyway and move on contracted players - covid list cuts came a year after they were given extra list spots and they filled them up.

Sucks that we can't ever be the beneficiary of that sort of trade but I suspect they'd never do that sort of deal with us.
