Not sure what to say about Ah Chee playing defense. Made too many mistakes in that game for my liking.

Honestly I came away with the opposite view - thought he played quite well, was tidy with the ball and played his role. Starce made a number of noticeable errors early in the game and was the most sloppy player defensively I thought.

With the second rotation of Neale, Hugh and Linc/Zorko? inside. And then Lyons and Berry? on the wings. So interesting setups that arent what we're used to

Id prefer Lyons on the inside and the likes of McCarthy or Zorko on the wing. Lyons and Berry are the big bodies you need winning the ball.

To be fair I only saw Lyons there once in the first half. Might have just been awkward timing in the rotations. But it is clear from this practice match that we are experimenting with a lot of different players in different roles. You get a feel that most have a primary role but we are definitely rotating heavily in the mids

Mixed it up in the M/F . Not reading too much into it because Daniher and Hipwood had no real opposition but with the two of them at that height we're far more potent. The combo looks like it could work really well. Hipwood is a weapon one on one around the wings , very hard to match up on. I thought Fullarton shows enough promise to be persevered with though not sure where he'll fit in with the current structure , but definitely an upgrade on Archie when he learns a bit more about ruckwork . Ely certainly looks a lot sharper . You'd have to think Bailey is going to be a gun, more so than Rayner in my view. Matho always shows up this time of year because of his fitness edge.

Robbo will be needed at some point during the year but we're looking for more speed around the packs the way we rotated the wings and the M/F in this game so his place in the best 22 is in jeopardy.

Looking at the ’fringe‘ players trying to get into the team for Round 1,I thought that Fullarton and Madden looked the most likely, both pretty impressive, although presumably Fullarton would only play if they go with two rucks which seems unlikely. Coleman and Payne were also both good and look lik probable starters. Matho tried hard and did some good things but still suffers from poor skills under pressure. Ely didn’t show much at all in my opinion,a bit disappointing after all the talk about his great preseason. Couldn’t see him replacing Robbo based on that display.

Yeah looked like a lot of rotation going on. Saw even Neale on the far wing once. Generally we seem to have a bigger bodied player as the interchange wing (Ely seems to be there the most) with a smaller winger (Hugh/Bailey and others but hard to see) on the far wing.

Other observations:
  • Think I saw Oscar take more boundary throw-ins from front position. Was a bit of a criticism last year that he got caught behind too much. Hopefully he changes that up.
  • Midfield and forward line are reasonably sharp. Joe and Hipwood look dangerous. Will feast if they get decent ball kicked in. Agree that we are looking at nice low passes in
  • Backline looked a little rusty so far. Starc and Ah Chee dropped or mis-kicked a few. Early days though
  • Mostly didnt mind the new mark rules. Lot of dangerous kicks causing fast play. Zorko milked a 50 on the far side. Smart players will definitely take advantage of that. There will be outrage when it results in a goal
Other thoughts:
  • Daniher only rucked a little in the forward line. Oscar and Fullarton probably split the rest 50/50. Both were ok but Witts (who probably played closer to 80% in the ruck) clearly was the best ruckman. Our midfield was much better though
  • Joe probably could have kicked a few more (accuracy wasnt great) and had at least another that someone took advantage and scored.
  • McStay will be interesting playing on the third tall if we get our leading patterns right. He could have some real mismatches at times.
  • Ah Chee definitely improved from a rusty start. But dont think he played any wing time. Was all out of the back line I think
  • Matho got involved a lot in the second half but I think he plays for high frees too much still. Also a bit rusty with a few shanks
  • Hard to tell what our midfield will be like as I feel like we rotated a lot of options all game
  • Good kicking is going to be lethal this year. Fast play on into the corridor will break every team open at times. Birchall maybe plays more than I thought.

Fullarton's a lot better around the ground than he is in ruckwork at present so if he bulks up a bit a learns how to ruck he'll be a good player.

Agree McStay took a few grabs against undersized opponents and will appreciate the extra freedom.

thought the game was pretty rusty in a lot of it. As they normally are this time of the year.
Even though the defensive was undersized good to see Joe running around and going for the ball.

Those wanting spots. Be interesting what happens with Mitch Robbo. Ely and Matho both seem to be up for his spot. Matho disposal still not great after all these years. Ely did a few good things. I pick Ely if Robbo not fit enough.
Madden seemed good and pretty calm although funny kicking style with the oval ball still.
Fullarton/Big O seemed to share the ruck although Witts outplayed both which was a worry. Not sure we go 2 rucks and Joe.
Lester and Payne interesting.. Saw more of Payne so does that mean Lester did his job :)
I agree lots of rusty kicks and fumbles.. like most practise matches.

Rayner looks very good and when he gets the ball something happens.
Richy was solid as always and another who kicked it well.
Hippy up and about
McStay seemed to like more freedom.
Linc was about so Ah Chee.
Interesting what happens with Charlie.. I thought he play more up the ground.. seemed to be in forward 50.
Zorko had some zip back in passages.
Go Go Gadget Harris was his normal self... No one can grab a handful of jumper if you do not have one :)
It was a game of dropped marks and turnovers. Be interesting next week.

And yes whoever the salty guy was kept me laughing.. lots of 50-50 frees which where there we got for once.
Most weeks it be play on.

Really loved the game of Bailey in the practice match, BIG year for this young man.
IMO Payne definitely in the team.
Really hope Coleman gets a good crack this year, like his defensive pressure in the forward line, and Ely is looking a lot sharper, but not sure yet if he is pushing Robbo out in the first half of the season, but never know if he has a blinder in the Monday night game. Maybe Starc or Ah Chee play on the wings at some point and perhaps Robbo is under pressure from a number of players.
Agree Fullarton only plays if we go with 2 rucks, otherwise McStay has first crack at that roaming 3rd tall role in the early part of the round

Like others mentioned, I enjoyed the wider camera angle. Good to see some footy again. An observation re the new standing the mark rule when taking shots on/ outside 50. With umps not calling play on, there were a few times when players were kicking next to, instead of over, the man on the mark. Interesting to see if that continues.

I heard on a podcast today that they think it should be just between the arcs that you can’t move laterally.
When inside 50 and lining up for goal you can move laterally on the mark.
Makes sense.

I prefer it across the ground tbh. Will open the ground up more.

I agree but I do think that it would be good to be able to create just a little bit of pressure when kicking for goal. Other than just waving your arms in the air.

Just got through the game, and gotta agree with everyone saying that bailey was one of the biggest stand outs. Looks set to fill that mobile mid role that zorks owned going forward (though zorko looked noticeably more mobile than he did after the injury last year. Very good to see, should see him back to his old self this season you'd hope). I also really liked cams work as an inside mid, in previous years its been his creativity and ability to make plays on the run that looked his strongest skill so it was interesting seeing him being able to play the ball winner + handball role.

Really liked ely's second efforts in this game. If he can keep the work rate up you'd think he'll be staking a claim to Robbos spot pretty early on, particularly if fitness is a concern.

And I know they weren't playing against comparable defenders but I loved the chemistry between hippy and Joe. It was fantastic to see them wheeling around and looking for each other with clean raking kicks. Sensational stuff

Does anyone know if any stats have been released for this game? If seen the cba attendances from statsmate, but that’s about it.

Would be surprised if they put the stats up given its a praccy but would love to see them if they do. Thought cam had what looked to be a high disposal game for him, would be interested to see if it was in the 20s

The abridged version:

I'm confused, having watched the replay, were crowds permitted to the game because given the vocal person in attendance and clapping etc., it is pretty unlikely that they'd have been a Suns official?

Yeah seemed that Cam got a bit of the pill. I was hoping for Bailey to improve his ave disposal count by +5 this year and interested to see how he finished up. May be a good excuse to watch the game again and count myself haha.
