Training 2022 - 2023 Off-Season and Pre-Season training Watch

The players are starting to file back in nice and early, getting a jump start on the pre-season. Pretty crazy how quickly they get back into it these days!

From a S&C point of view I'm a big fan of all the movements they've got the youngsters doing in the gym there besides maybe the dumbbell floor press. Seems lower body strength and conditioning is going to be a big focus this off season:

Jeka - Kettlebell Swings, if there was only one movement I could recommend everyone do it'd be this. Great for building power through the entire posterior chain.

Reeves and Ward - Hex-bar Deadlifts, a great movement for power which allows for greater knee flexion and a more natural squat starting point. Good carry over for a jumping athlete, handy for a ruck.

Newc - Bulgarian Split Squats, aka torture. Probably my favourite leg movement, all the benefits of building power while also being a great active stretch for the hips and quadriceps on the opposite leg.

Morrison - backwards sled drags (I assume), which is a newly popular movement because it's absolute money for anyone wanting to strengthen the knee particularly for those with prior injury like Harry. Getting strong moving in reverse is really important.

Only criticism, I wish they'd stop weight training in runners... but that's a rant for another day.
Regarding the floor dumbbell press, quite likely that’s specific for Worpedo recovering from his shoulder injury to protect a going past 90 degree

Massive opportunity for worpel for a 10 year career from this point. Needs to be told to do what he does best get and distribute by hand to our kickers.
Worpel is a massive watch for me in the preseason. Clear air ahead of him in the midfield. He just needs to take the chance.

Worpel will be the player that’s under the most pressure. He isn’t a guaranteed starter in the best 22. I really hope he does get back to his 2019 form again, but he will need to lose weight and also build back his fitness.

Agree with most of this, but from the photos I've seen, he doesn't need to lose anymore weight. He's looking ripped and lean!

So... Is Jai still one of those kids that takes a footy with him absolutely everywhere?

I love this man.

Call me old fashioned. But the thing I love about the photos I’ve seen this off-season including this one, is that the youngsters are close knit.

Most travelled to Italy together. Worps Newc and Bramble in the NT together.

Hopefully it builds a culture where, when you have players like Newcombe who apply themselves so well, they lift the rest of that close group up by the bootstraps …

I agree. A group of tight-knit young lads isn't something we've seen at a long time at Hawthorn.

It is great to see - however I used to see Titch, JOM and a group of 6-7 players regularly having dinner around Richmond when they first joined the team.

The closeness of this group is by design. It's not a coincidence. Players have been asked to form close relationships with their teammates.
That might work on 5 year olds, not blokes in their 20s! This is their doing, not the club's.

You can't force people to form tight bonds, the club may want them to but there's no way they've become close by design. It makes it seem like they have no agency of their own.

It can't be understated how much of an asset it is when you're playing with genuine mates as opposed to a teammate.
There's much more intent when you need to go into bat when one of your mates gets knocked on his arse by an opp. player.

I feel like what T4P is talking about is more to do with drafting/recruiting players who are more likely to seek deeper connections with their peers, whilst the club environment is one that fosters those deepening connections.

I'm really excited for this seasons off-season training.

HH and The Axe and others do such a bloody good job at hyping me up each season- can't wait!

Mate when i say these things i am only parroting the players. Its not my opinion. It is what they have told me. So do ask them the next time u speak to them. There are specific reasons for this

My school basketball coach used to make us carry a basketball around all day. Used to ask a couple of kids to see if they could dislodge it from our grasp and if they did we had to do push ups as punishment. We had to treat that ball like it was a baby and protect it at all costs with the aim being that if we wouldn't get it stolen during games. Some teachers weren't very fond of the concept 😂

Anyone seen or have any Ramma pics back training? With his running ability, reflexes below the knees, repeat effort in contests, marking height at full stretch at 200+ cm ……… a freak! For me his progress and development is so important for us rising again. Has CHF written all over him and with Lewis could form a formidable partnership for the years ahead. Hope he’s putting on some size and power while still maintaining his athleticism. One of the players I will be watching closely ☝️🤞

Haven't seen him back yet, but mirror that excitement. Real unique sort of prospect, a player that has all the tools just needs to put them together.
